Campaign Setting: God Like
Premise: Here's an idea for a campaign idea, i have tossed around for awhile now. An ancient world, where the “super heroes” are really the gods of myth. GM's may wish to use 20 pp/PL instead of the usual 15, because it will help fit the Truely "god like "proportions the campaign can take.

Power level Suggestions
Epic Heroes (8-9): Are built anywhere from power level 8 to 9. These are the hero’s of myth who have risen to great heights. Epic Heroes have not learned to manipulate cosmic forces, to manipulate reality. But they have many tricks, powers, and devices at their disposal. Though not "Gods" like what is suggested here, they can be used in such a campaign. And can achieve many of the abilities that gods do have. So they have been included as possible characters.

Demi Gods (10-11): Demi gods have risen into the ranks of pantheon either from being Epic Heroes, or from being the children of lesser gods. And are over-all accepted as having an influence in the cosmic scale of things. Demi gods can usually command one aspect of the Universe.
Lesser Gods (12-13): Lesser Gods are usually of Cosmic origin, and are the bottom rung of the god like ladder. However even an Epic could rise this high, but rarely higher. Lesser gods can usually command at least two aspects of the Universe.
Intermediate (14-15): Intermediate gods, are powerful beings, with the ability to command several areas of influence. Intermediate gods can usually control at the very least three aspects.
Greater Gods (16+): Greater gods are at the top of the Cosmic ladder, and are usually in the ones who have started the Pantheon. The can control at the very least four aspects of the universe.

Basic God Templates:
Abilities [12pp]: All gods have a far higher endurance level than mortals, as well as a commanding presence. And the wisdom to use their power. Constitution 14, Wisdom 14, Charisma 14.
Feats [0pp]: All gods have the quintessential essence, to manipulate the world and to some degree the reality around them. For everyone but the Epic Hero, the player will be required to take a certain number of Ranks in the Benefit: Stature feat. So you should consider spending some points in the Adoration, or the Omniscience Feat. They are repeated here though they are found later in this thread.
God like Feats:
There are several feats available to god like beings. In most cases they are limited by the character’s "God-Like" status. Generally determined by Power Level.
1 Rank = Demi God
2 Rank = Lesser God
3 Rank = Intermediate God
4 Rank = Greater God

Benefit (Stature, Ranked)
Well after all this talk, I think we can safely hammer out these effects. The ranks in this special status feat, are limited by the character creation in question. The number of Ranks in this feat, provide a +2 bonus to bluff, diplomacy, and Intimidation checks with the god’s followers and minions. Against those who are not his worshipers, the modifier is one half the normal bonus. For double the cost per rank, this feat also inspires dedication in any minions within perception range of their god, gaining a +2/rank to any checks, that might sway his faith in his god.

Adoration (Ranked)
The god’s influence, is even greater than many who can inspire such devotion and greatness in others. Now the god can affect a large number of people. Each rank in this feat, improves the number of allies the god can affect by a bonus of +2.

Omniscience (Ranked)
Some god like beings, have the ability to expand their consciousness into the very universe around them. Granting them insight into the mysteries of Reality. This allows the god, access to the Inspiration effect from using Hero points.

Powers [9/15pp]:
Immortality 6 [Immunity (Aging, Disease, Cold, Hot Temperatures) + Regeneration 1 (Resurrection; Extra: True Resurrection)]
- All gods are immune to mundane necessities, they never age, and cannot die from disease, or temperature extremes. They also have a chance of coming back from the dead, should they die. However they can be killed by "Godly" weapons, which have been infused with power (aka Quintessence). Treat this as a feature, when designing weapons that gods have.

Super Senses 3 [Cosmic Awareness (radius, extended)]
- All gods can sense the energy that is used from most god like beings. For the sake of this document, we can call "Godly Energy" Quintessence.

God Spheres 1 [A god sphere is the gods ability to control an aspect of reality. The number of aspects a god can manipulate is based the number of ranks in his "God Status". This is the Variable Power (at 6pp/rank). These aspects, indicate the kind of descriptors the power can have. If the power the god wishes to use, doesn't fit with his areas of influence, he cannot use the God Sphere power. GM's who don't want to use this , can simply go with a Dynamic array as is described below.

It is quite common for gods to even still have an Array of "Godly Magic" even in addition to the God Sphere power. Especially if the God Sphere is low in rank. Or this array might be a collection of magical powers they have achieved in their mortal life. This array may often be entirely Dynamic in nature, and can usually fore-go the usual drawbacks of gesture and incantation that most spell casters have.

GOD LIKE POWERS
There are some staple god like powers, that some gods might want to take.

Divine Grace (2/rank): Many gods have a grace about them, that makes them extremely hard to kill. And closes their mind to outside influence. This power is essentially , Impervious Toughness Save + Impervious Will Save linked together.

Divine Presence [Awe]: Many gods exude a majestic aura, that makes it hard for mortals to be around. This is a specialized form of Emotion Control listed here, a combination of Calm and Despair. Those under the affects of Awe, Adopt a Friendly Attitude; Awe counters Emotion Effects. Failure by 5 or more means the Target Suffers a -2 on attack rolls, saving throws, and checks. Failure by 10 or more means the target is overcome, and just stands there , unable to take any action. Awe can be countered by Despair, Calm, and Fear. Divine Presence as a power has the following stat block:

Divine Presence
Action: Standard
Range: Touch
Area: Perception (visual)
Duration: Sustained
Saving Throw: Will (staged)
Cost: 2pp/Rank

If you need help with Mesopotamian mythos, I'm happy to chip in. I made a modern PL 10 Gilgamesh (poor grad student reads ancient cuneiform tablet that invokes a spell that turns him into a sort of Gilgamesh avatar...), but it's not quite the same thing as you have in mind, I think...

All help is appreciated of course, but no. The concept of this, is a setting where the "heroes" are actually the gods of myth themselves. Or the Heroe's etc.. Gilgamesh, would be a Quasi with what i have written.

Nice couple of builds

Postby Daret Vox » Thu Aug 21, 2008 6:18 pm

JD,

Nice couple of deity builds. I like the campaign concept as well. Couple of questions...

1) Are you soliciting submissions for other gods using the format that you have laid out?

2) Have you considered setting PL limits for the characters based on the number of worshipers of a particular deity? My initial thought would be using the value progression table, so a quasigod (PL 8) would need 250 worshipers, while a true demigod (PL 10) would need 1000 worshipers. It might be a good campaign hook and give these divine characters a reason to care about their mortal admirers.

Yes, you are more than welcome to add your own two cents to what i got laid out here. And no i never did consider worshippers against a god's power. But their might be some interesting rules to work out there. Your idea does have some merit, though im not sure i'm willing to encorporate a system just yet. As for what else i'm doing, im going to try and stat a few more Norse gods. If you have any other mythologies you would like to tackle, or norse gods let me know. So i know who not to work on.

I will steer clear of the Norse gods, but may throw together a couple of Egyptian deities.

Isn't 'God Like' an inappropriate name for a setting about... Gods? :)

It's secretly Ironic, since we don't really know if they are Hero's or Gods.
