I later learned that he took me in to keep me from becoming his enemy one day. He was mistaken. My goal was never to become his enemy. It was to become his replacement.

And that time is now.

Comments: Major spoiler here…well, not if you look at Comicvine or Wikipedia or the Sidekicks Lounge or...huh, maybe it's not such a spoiler. :)

In Battle for the Cowl, Jason Todd has appointed himself the new Batman and in his usual violent flare, has been cleanin up Gotham his way…by shooting criminals down in cold blood to teach them REAL fear. Needless to say, Mr. Grayson and Mr. Drake are none too happy with him and have tried to "talk" with him, but they’re not really having much luck against him at the moment, anyway. He's been handing them their asses, really, which is one of the reasons I love Jason Todd, especially as a villain. As I get older, I realize the world is a lot more gray than black and white and the real line between right and wrong, villainy and heroism is a lot thinner than we'd like to think. I love characters like Lex Luthor, Doctor Doom and Jason Todd because THEY think they're right and don't see themselves as evil or if they do bad things it's because they think it's necessary. I think the best villains are always the ones that don't see themselves as villains, or see some wrong in their actions, but think it's for the greater good. The sad thing is that in the real world, sometimes, they're actually right. But in our wonderful comic world, they're not, which is one of the reasons the genre has been some successful for so long, I suppose.

Anyway, this Jason build as Batman is bad arse. With his own Bat Suit, his usual assortment of guns and his Kris knife along with his own little Batcave that he built with a few Deathtraps for intruders (I think that's from the Mastermind's Manual, if not, it's in Agents of Freedom, my memory fails me at the moment), he's wicked bad in the Gotham setting. It seems to be building to a big throwdown between Dick and Jason for the Cowl, but I guess we’ll see what happens in the final issue of Battle for the Cowl. There's still several wildcards to be played, including Catman, Wildcat and Damian Wayne so it will be interesting to see what comes of the whole thing.

Comments: OK, let the “Wow, Batman is a Dick” jokes begin!

In Battle for Cowl, it looks, I repeat, LOOKS, like writer Tony Daniel is actually going to go with the will of the masses and have Dick Grayson take up the cowl in Bruce’s absence. We’ll see if a big schwerve happens in Battle of the Cowl #3, though. As I've stated here in the Sidekick's Lounge before, I am fine with them giving Bruce's character a break, I just think that Grayson HAS to be the new Batman for it to work.

On a side note, looks like we're getting a new Cap, Black Panther, Sorcerer Supreme and Batman in a year's span. I see a trend. I wonder who's next?

It’s looking like a showdown between him and Jason and it should be a good one. I built these last two builds in hopes that I would actually follow through on a preview battle just for giggles, but with my current list of honey-dos, I don’t see it. But I can dream, can't I?!?!?!? :)

But IF I were to do the fight, I really think Dick would have his hands full with Jason, even with a PL and 35pp extra to his advantage. Jason is built to do a lot more damage overall, so if he got the drop on Dick, it would be a hard fight for him to win.

This build is ripe for a reworking after a we see what happens, but I think it’s a good mix of where Dick is and what he is hopefully becoming. I moved most of Bruce's equipment over to Dick, I mean, Richard (they made a point of Alfred calling him Richard for most of the last issue so I guess they're trying to avoid my earlier joke being commonplace) and just tweaked my other Nightwing build a bit, added Taliesin's Two-Weapon Fighting feat, which seemed to really fit him with his Escrima Sticks being two-handed and considered it done. But I figure once, or if, he does for sure take on the Bat Mantle, he'll become better at everything like automatically, so I'll have to make some updates.

Back Story: Gabriel Summers is a man of power. He has the ability to control all and any types of energy: cosmic, plasma, radiation, magnetism, psionic, etc. If it's a type of energy, he is it's undisputed master. He is also the posterchild for the "got a raw deal in life" fan club. Gabriel was born and raised on earth, in a facility ran by the Shiar Empire. After accidentilly killing his hand-maiden, he went on the lamb, running from everything and everyone he knew. He would later be found and taken to Dr. Moria McTaggart. He was trained, along with a few others, to have full control over their abilities. Gabriel took the name Kid Vulcan.

**Vulcan was a mind wreck for me to build. He is not your typical energy style character, as he can harness his own energy (which I wrote up as Cosmic Energy of a variable descriptor), but he can manipulate anything with an energy descriptor: cyclops eye blast, cosmic radiation, star ship engines, psionic based energy...all of it. When it comes to Marvel creating gods in their universe, Vulcan is really high on the list.

This particular Vulcan comes in AFTER Darwin is pulled out of him, but before he becomes the lord and master of the Shiar Empire. I do fully believe that Vulcan comes out like this, as his energy absorption abilities allow him to put a sustained boost on his powers, as well as really do anything he wants with energy.

probably the most powerful of Vulcan's abilities, or at least the most impressive, is his ability to deflect energy in a way where he can direct it where-ever he wishes, including the ability to curve it around him and slam it back into the target.

He is the first character that I have used both the Dynamic and Wide modifiers for...making him INSANELY powerful beyond what he seems at first hand.
With everything going on, it's easy to miss someone stealing a nuclear missle silo.

Hmm.

Not enough Batman.

Hah, just kidding.

I find Batman a difficult character to place and have wavered between PL11 and PL12 for him, just because, more than nearly any character except for Lobo, Batman operates across a wide range of genres.

 Jack, just Jack (Jack Caver actually) from the Wii game Mad World. An ex-Marine Force Recon operator and Jefferson City Homicide Detective who has a bionic arm with a chainsaw, and a mad-on that just won't go away. He's infiltrated Jefferson City on a mission only he knows about, and he's NOT sharing it with anyone else, especially the folks in contact with him through his earbud commlink. He's bad ass with a capital BAD, taking on ninjas, zombies, robots and gigantic freaks without blinking an eye.

 Jack's robot arm has two functions - the most powerful one being his chainsaw. As there are no enemies he CAN'T hurt with that sticker, I gave him Corrosion, but not Mighty Corrosion as per some lightsaber builds. However, sometimes the Chainsaw can run out of juice, or Jack just prefers to punch a sucker. In those instances, I set it so that Jack's big robot fist just plain, honking HURTS.

 Being both a detective AND a former Recon Marine, Jack is a skill monkey and a very skilled, ornery battler. As well, Jack's friggin' dangerous on a motorcycle, hence his high drive scores and his Combat driver feat.

 Much of his base build and skills were cribbed from the Iron Age Black Ops guy, with changes to account for his background and in game abilities.

Ain't that the truth. He could be legitimately PL9 to PL15 (at least) depending on the writer and the situation. That's why I run the gamut with him and other characters I dig that have varying levels. I can never decide, so I just figure "why not build them at all kinds of levels"?

Variety. Competitive Prices. Mediocre builds. Violence Glorification. The J-Mart core values, my friends. :D

Awesome, awesome builds Thorp.

Having just started a DC-based M&M game with a few friends (Earth-14!), your DC builds have been invaluable in our own exercises of character-building. So thanks!
