The issue you are referring to IIRC was the Masters of Evil storyline and the West Coast Avengers crossover called A Tale of Two Kitties where Hellcat and Tigra took him down like an amateur by ripping open the suit so he had no water. Really poorly written episode. The whole fight lasted about a page at most.

Mmmmm nope.

It was the one just before Yellowjacket went cookoo for coconuts around the 200's, a while before the Wackos appeared and just before Jen joined the Fantastic Four.

Being hit over the head with a station wagon is a sign of toughness and shows a certain respect for the character. You know he is not going to be killed by it. Hitting J Jonah Jameson over the head with a station wagon on the other hand....

My advice ? Avoid the Tale of Two Kitties issue. The rest of that Masters of Evil storyline was really good.

I don't know why but Equinox is so silly looking with such a bizarre power set I can't help but love him. What's his story anyway, why was he giving Wasp and Yellowjacket a hard time?

If memory serves, the cliff notes version what that he was a victim of his mother's experimentation with some kind of thermal conversion device or something and she knew Pym and then mayhem ensued. Wikipedia or Comicvine explains it much better.

Comments: My Earth-217 building concepts are basically slightly lower PLs (PL9-135pp is what I am looking at for a base as opposed to PL10-150pp) and not quite as many feats (because I’ve noticed that I tend to get Feat happy on a lot of my builds) which should help reduce overall PP cost. But by no means I am going to base all the builds on 15pp per level. I'm just trying to not go quite as crazy on overall pp as I had before. Most of the time, anyway...

Other concepts that I am introducing to the Earth-217 versions of my builds are half PLs (thanks for the idea, Elric) and moving more towards the concept of basing PL on an average of the characters' intended offensive PL and defensive PL. I think this Spider-Man is a good example of the feel I’m going for with the way I will be re-working a lot of my builds.

Many more re-imaginings to come.

Clean Up 5/29/08: Dialed up the juice on my original Spidey build. He's more prepared to take on higher threats or deal with multiple members of his rogues' gallery at the same time.

Clean Up 6/3/09: Can't leave well enough alone. Had to tweak the Spidey again. Went back to organic web shooters and made some other changes. My previous build remains for posperity.

Here is the first of my Earth-217 builds, a retooled Spider-Man. This Spidey is closer to classic Spidey, not as experienced or powerful as his current Marvel incarnation.

The next few builds are going to be characters from the Spider-Man and Daredevil universes. I had re-posed Kingpin and Doc Oc earlier, so I figured I'd take a look at my other builds from that genre. I saw the need to rework my main Spidey build since I hadn't looked at it in a while and was OK with my PC versions. I went back to the organic webbing because it's just cooler IMHO and I am getting rid of the opposing PL average thing I used for a while just because I think it's better to just base the PL off the character's highest rank or offense/defense tradeoffs at this point.

Comments: One of my favorite side characters in Marvel, Night Nurse. When Daredevil or Iron Fist or someone like that needs some medical attention on the down low, they all know to look up the Night Nurse. She hadn't been seen in a while, but she popped up recently in the New Avengers as the new girlfriend of Dr. Strange but it didn't say anything about her still really nursing. Last time I saw her, she was treating Elektra in her new mini-series this past monthg, so I guess she's still in business.

She will be a staple in the Thorpacoverse since the costumed adventurer types always need someone to stitch them up after they’ve been a rumble and heck, Alfred’s getting up there, he can’t stitching that Bat Family forever. She may have to move to Gotham…

Comments: Steel Spider was a kid named Ollie Osnick who was a big fan of Doc Oc. Then after seeing Spidey in action against him, he became a fan of Spidey instead. He had already created a harness similar to Oc’s so he changed it around and made the legs like spider legs and the Steel Spider was born. He popped up from time to time in a humorous capacity, hanging out with goofy heroes like Frog Man and such. But during the Civil War, he got a new tougher attitude, trimmed down, got in shape, upgraded his harness and got some good run as a target of the Thunderbolts for a couple of issues. He held his own against them for a while with the help of American Eagle and Sepulchre but finally got taken down when Venom ate his arm. Oops.

I modeled his harness after my original Doc Oc build for the most part, but it’s not quite as powerful. However, he did add a web snare and gun to them so he does have options in combat. I read that he got injected with some spider venom after he got out of the Negative Zone prison and grew his arm back, but I didn’t add a healing factor. Doesn’t seem like it fits him yet, but I guess we’ll see.

The gun katas. Through analysis of thousands of recorded gunfights, the Cleric has determined that the geometric distribution of antagonists in any gun battle is a statistically predictable element. The gun kata treats the gun as a total weapon, each fluid position representing a maximum kill zone, inflicting maximum damage on the maximum number of opponents while keeping the defender clear of the statistically traditional trajectories of return fire. By the rote mastery of this art, your firing efficiency will rise by no less than 120%. The difference of a 63% increase to lethal proficiency makes the master of the gun katas an adversary not to be taken lightly.

Comments: My take on one of the top minion sweeping bad asses in moviedom, John Preston. I didn’t see Equilibrium until about 3 months ago when I was reading Wordmaker’s thread and he, and the ATT community, were giving John Preston all kinds of props. After watching the movie, I can now see why. Christian Bale did his usual great job and the action sequences were amazing. After that, when I finally thought about starting my own thread, it was a given he would be included early.

Preston is built to take out large numbers of minions, but not be too big a threat to real super powered foes. However, with the potential for Auto Fire damage boosts and the good crit range I added to the Tetragrammaton Pistols, he can probably hang with most characters without Impervious Protection.

I decided to use the Targeted Area burst as recommended to the above mentioned Wordmaker’s build, and from a test with an homage original character, it works perfectly. Another guy I cannot wait to play test.

And can you believe it? I actually made a character that came in at recommended PP levels? I may get the hang of this stuff yet...

Update 9/8/07: After building Brandt, I came back and made a few updates to John. Just a few minor things, but it took him over 150pp, which I didn't really mind. I was a lot more obsessed with hitting recommended PP limits at first, but that has gone by the wayside!

Clean Up 12/27/07: Took a few PP back off to get him back to playable PL10/150.

Clean Up 8/5/08: Another tweak to John as I get ready to turn him loose. After watching Wanted and noting a few things that Elric mentioned about the use of an area attack and critical hits, I had to change his Gun Kata effect. Much cleaner now and I think it's actually rules appropriate!

Clean Up 6/5/09: After watching Equilibrium again, I realized if anyone deserved at least a rank of Improved Disarm, it's Preston. I also increased his Blast from 5 ranks to 6 after a little playtest I did after I watched the show again.

John Preston is just DA BOMB. Again, for those that have not seen Equilibrium, shame on you. The movie is OK, but the action sequences with Bale...fantastic.

John Preston's signature style is to take out a lot of mooks in a short time. As I stated above, I did a few rounds with this build vs. the ninjas from the core book. He took out over 20 in 3 rounds and didn't take a hit, so I think I got this one right.

I think Bale is taking too much heat about Terminator: Salvation. I thought he did his usual fine job, it was the script that didn't quite click to me. It was not a bad movie, but it didn't thrill me like Star Trek and UP did. I think I actually like UP more than Star Trek, and that's saying something.

Comments: A Spidey and DD sometime opponent, sometime ally, The Black Tarantula. Carlos LaMuerto is a a former crimelord from South America who did battle with Spider Man and Daredevil over the past few years, but was never really a villain along the lines of the Kingpin. Recently, he has been acting as an anti-hero, hanging out with Matt Murdock, but killing a former member of his gang (he deserved it, though) and then giving the stolen money to a shelter telling them to "help people with this". Unfortunately, most recently he got whacked by Lady Bullseye and resurrected as an assassin for The Hand.

And an effective assassin he should be. He's super strong, has a healing factor, is a strong hand-to-hand combatant and of course, has lots of experience in leading gangs. I was going to keep him at playable PP, but I don't really see him as a PC in the Thorpacoverse, just more of a street contact for DD and the like. But it would be easy to do, kill off the Impervious, the minions and the extra equipment and he slides in to 150pp pretty easy.

Another item from our Spiderverse line hits the Aisle 2 shelves.

Sadly, while Miguel's choice of footware made him a formidable assassin, it caused him to be a failure at the sport he loved...soccer.

TARANTULA (ANTON MIGUEL RODRIGUEZ)

DRAWBACKS:

Abilities 36 + Skills 17 (68 ranks) + Feats 25 + Powers 18 + Combat 30 + Saves 9 – Drawbacks 0 = 135 / 135

Comments: OK, he’s probably not a real PL10 and I probably overdid his offense, but man I used to LOVE the Tarantula as a kid. I believe I actually have, or had the comic pictured above. I lost a good part of my early stash when my storage area in my first apartment flooded so I think it got wasted. C'est la vie...

Anyway, Tarantula's costume was cool and he really gave Spidey fits, especially the few times he connected with that poison tipped boot. He always got whooped in the end, but sometimes it took someone like Cap or DD to show up and bail Spidey out.

Eventually the poor guy got mutated into a real giant spider and got put down so they could bring new versions, like the chick in the latest Heroes for Hire run, but I hope that they bring him back sometime.

SAVES: Toughness +9 (+9 flat-footed), Fortitude +7, Reflex +5, Will +3

DRAWBACKS:

Abilities 28 + Skills 15 (60 ranks) + Feats 15 + Powers 12 + Combat 28 + Saves 7 – Drawbacks 0 = 105 / 105

Comments: Gladiator is one of Daredevil’s oldest foes. He was a bruiser that has spinning saw blade type thingy on his costume and use to give DD a pretty hard time for a while. But eventually he became a whipping boy and then they decided to give good old Melvin Potter here a shot at being an ally of DD instead. He did that for a while then recently went back to his old ways, but it turned out he was being mind controlled.

The fun character thing about him is that he’s this big, hulking, high level fighter,, career criminal guy who LOVES fashion, so he gets some ranks in Sewing and Knowledge: Fashion since he’s actually been shown to be pretty good at it.

Comments: I had already done Maya as Ronin a while back, but after reading the Daredevil arc where she was introduced, I felt like a lower level build with some tweaks was in order. It is one of the best written TBPs I have ever read, actually, and while I am a DD fan, he's not a big favorite or anything. But Parts of a Hole is fantastic. And it’s mainly for the way the Kingpin is written and the way Maya and Matt’s relationship evolves in the short time that they are together that draws you in, not the overall plot.

To sum up Maya’s intro, Kingpin killed Maya’s dad long ago and he never told her, of course, but honored her dad’s request that he take care of her since they were friends for a good while before Kingpin wanted him put down. Fisk didn't tell her for many years and of course when she asked him who killed her father he said DD did it. She wanted revenge and she started using her reflex memory ability to learn to fight like Bruce Lee, Bullseye and DD himself to confront him. Prior to that, Kinpgin had set her up to meet Matt and they started to fall for each other, of course. When they fought, she had him down because he knew it was her since she was not masked and he was holding back. After a couple of fights, he finally got her where he she could read his lips and realize it was him and she turned around and confronted and shot the Kingpin, taking him out commission for a while. It was pretty easy to see where it was all going, but man, the way Kingpin was written in regards to his motivations and thought processes and the way Matt was portrayed was just wonderful.
