Image
Let's play.

El Mariachi

Equipment: Mariachi jacket (Protection 1; 1ep)

Guitar case arsenal (Equipment array; 17ep)

Abilities 26 + Skills 16 (64 ranks) + Feats 22 + Powers 0 + Combat 18 + Saves 9 – Drawbacks -1 = Total 90

Complications: Guilty complex, Love (Domino / Carolina)

 incredibly for once I was able to stay within the PL/Cost limits, but since 'El' can do only two things playing the guitar and shooting it was no big deal

 the build is based around "El Mariachi" and "Desperado" rather than "Once upon a time in Mexico", so I didn't included some of the heaviest guns he sported in the last movie

 the ruined hand drawback is something problematic, in "El Mariachi" it was stated that after being shooted he won't be able to use the hand for anything requiring precision - like playing the guitar - any longer, but in the last movie he was able to play just fine, so I'm quite lost

 since the history of El Mariachi is based around the same premises of Mad Max I placed them on the same PL

 the Dual wielding feat is Ambidexterity + Twin weapons strike (which I used in a slightly different way from the RAW) with the Limited (Pistols) flaw

Nice looking gritty El Mariachi build. I've only seen Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and you're right to say he is very different in it. Nice gunfighter.

Tell me about it, I knew that Snake was squeeszing out all his possibilities with that shot so the critical looked appropriate but after I saw the total damage bonus I was in need of an oxigen mask.

Ah well - mabye we can take our revenge by pitting him against some of his Brother from Another Medium's foes? A round or two with Psycho Mantis ought to curl his toes a bit!

#76 The Man with No Name (10000th threadviews build)

Postby Woodclaw » Wed Oct 07, 2009 7:49 am

Well this is it, my celebrative build for finally achieving the 5 digits threadviews (a benchmark I never thought I'll achieve when i started this topic). And considering my recent streak of movie gunfighters' builds I decided to went for the classic among the classics.

Image
Get three coffins ready.

The Man with No Name
Joe / Manco / Blondie / ???

Power Level: 7 (105pp)

Abilities: STR: 16 (+3), DEX: 16 (+3), CON: 16 (+3), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 16 (+3), CHA: 14 (+2)

Skills: Bluff 6 (+8), Climb 4 (+7), Demolitions 4 (+6), Diplomacy 6 (+8), Drive 2 (+5), Gambling 5 (+8), Gather informations 4 (+6), Intimidate 8 (+10), Language 1 (Spanish; Native: English), Medicine 2 (+5), Notice 5 (+8), Ride 3 (+6), Search 4 (+6), Sense motive 5 (+8), Sleight of hand 3 (+6), Stealth 3 (+6), Survival 4 (+7), Swim 4 (+7)

Feats: Assessement, Attack focus 2 (Ranged), Attack specialzation 1 (Revolvers), Connected, Defensive roll 2, Diehard, Distract (Intimidate), Dodge focus 2, Endurance 1, Fascinate (Intimidate), Fearsome presence 3, Improved aim, Improved critical 1 (Revolver), Improved initiative 1, Lionheart 1, Power attack, Quick draw 2, Startle, Uncanny dodge 1 (Auditory)

Equipment: Revolver (+4 ballistic damage; crit 20; 40'; 8ep), Cigars (0ep), Poncho (0ep)

2 unspent ep

Combat: Attack +6 (+8 Ranged, +10 with Revolver); Damage +3 (Unarmed), +4 Colt; Defense +7 (+3 Flat-footed); Initiative +7

Saves: Toughness +5 (+3 Flat-footed), Fortitude +6, Reflex +4, Will +5

Drawbacks: Disability (Wounded hand [Common, Minor; -2pp])

Abilities 32 + Skills 19 (96 ranks) + Feats 27 + Powers 0 + Combat 22 + Saves 7 – Drawbacks -2 = Total 105

Complications: Tend to overestimate his luck

 the Man with No Name is only PL6, unless he is using a revolver or a +6 ranged damage weapon (like a stick of dynamite or a scattergun), in that case he went all the way up to PL7

 throughout the whole Dollar Trilogy he used two different revolvers - albeit both with the trademark silver rattlesnake engraved on the handle - a Colt SAA "Peacemaker".45 and a Colt Navy .36, the stats above represent the Peacemaker

 the wounded hand complication is slightly more serious than the one used on El Mariachi, since in "For a Few Dollars More" he was unable to do anything but shooting with it

Leone's movie are so full of great line that is hard to choose, I just picked one among all the avaibles.

Oooh a Man with No Name build, I'm pretty sure that's a Think Tank first! Very nice build Woodclaw, I wonder if he shouldn't have a Seize Initiative mostly cause its an extremely useful feat for a those high noon showdowns!
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Well he already have Quick draw and a +7 Initiative bonus which gave him a reasonable margin of security in a realist setting, but I'll think about it.

#77 Lone Wolf and Cub

Postby Woodclaw » Thu Oct 08, 2009 4:06 am

Another special threat for the 10000th threadviews.

Image
Father and son, we live on the Meifumadō, the road to hell.

Lone Wolf and Cub
Ogami Ittō

Power Level: 7 (141pp)

Abilities: STR: 16 (+3), DEX: 16 (+3), CON: 16 (+3), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 18 (+4), CHA: 16 (+3)

Skills: Acrobatics 5 (+8), Bluff 3 (+6), Climb 5 (+8), Concentration 6 (+10), Craft [Weaponsmith] 5 (+7), Diplomacy 4 (+7), Disable device 3 (+5), Gather informations 2 (+5), Handle animal 3 (+6), Intimidate 7 (+10), Investigate 2 (+4), Knowledge [Current events] 7 (+9), Knowledge [History] 6 (+8), Knowledge [Theology & Philosophy] 7 (+9), Language - (Native: Japanese), Medicine 1 (+5), Notice 4 (+8), Ride 4 (+7), Search 4 (+6), Sense motive 6 (+10), Stealth 4 (+7), Survival 2 (+6), Swim 5 (+8)

Feats: Assessement, Blind fight, Endurance 1, Equipment 6, Fearsome presence 5, Improvised weapons 1, Lightsleeper, Lionhearth 1, Luck 1, Quick draw 1 (Drawing), Sense murderous intent, Sidekick 5 (Daigorō), Startle, Uncanny dodge (mental)

Suiō-ryu (Fighting style): Defensive roll 3, Dodge focus 3, Improved block 1, Improved disarm 1, Improved sunder, Takedown attack 2, Throw 1 (Melee weapons), Weapon bind, Weapon break, Wave slicing stroke*, Zanbato*

*Signature moves (see notes)

Equipment:

Weapons (Equipment array; 10ep)
- Dotanuki (+3 slashing damage; Crit 18; Adaptable, Mighty)
- Nagamaki (+3 slashing damage; crit 19; Extended reach 1, Mighty)
- Nage-yari (+2 piercing damage; crit 20; Mighty, Throw 2)
- Yari (+3 piercing damage; crit 20; Extended reach 2, Mighty)

Vehicle: Babycart (Medium, STR 10; TOU: 8; Features: Hidden compartments; Speed 2 [25 mph; Flaw: Limited (Downhill only)])
Powers:
Repeating rifle [+5 ballistic damage; Extra: Area (Cone, targeted), Autofire 1; Flaw: Unreliable (5 uses)]
AP: Metal plate (Deflect 8 [Fast and slow projectiles]; Flaw: Limited [Frontal attacks]); 16ep)

4ep in mission specific equipment

Combat: Attack +8; Damage +3 (Unarmed), or by weapon of choice; Defense +8 (+3 Flat-footed); Initiative +3

Saves: Toughness +6 (+3 Flat-footed), Fortitude +8, Reflex +6, Will +8

Abilities 36 + Skills 24 (96 ranks) + Feats 43 + Powers 0 + Combat 26 + Saves 12 + Drawbacks 0 = 141

Complications: Code of honor (Way of the assassin), Enemy (Yagyu Retsudo), Reputation (Assassin, former Kogi-kaishakunin)

 the true monster Ittō is quite possibly the most skilled and dangerous "realistic" assassin I can think of, he put his life at stake with every commision without fear of the consequences. I didn't think, even for a moment, about making him Cost/PL playable

 Ittō generally faces two kind of combat situations, single opponents (or a small group) with a level of skill close to his own or hordes of minions. Against the first he can hit hard and fast and possess an vast pool of combat options, while against the last the combination of Reach weapons, Takedown attack and Zanbato make him a true lawnmover

 the two signature moves of Ittō where handled through the guidelines of W&W

Wave slicing stroke: adds Subtle and Extended reach 1 to Melee weapons attacks, but only when Itto is able to hide the blade of the weapon under water, snow, tall grass or some similar form of cover.

Zanbato: is an inherent array feat, based on Ittō's DEX score, that adds Penetrating 6 to melee weapon attacks

 the Babycart Deflect power simulate the metal plating inserted on the bottom, in several occasions it was used to block arrows and musket bullets and since it requires Itto to dodge behind the tipped over cart it makes the use of the repeating rifle impractical

 about the rifle I gave it the Unreliable flaw because it is inside the cart and so quite difficult to reload, at the same time in the few occasions Ittō used it in combat it was shown to be able to fire multiple bursts rather than a single one (quite possibly a multiple charges mechanism, where different bullets and charges awere loaded on next to the other and exploded through different mechanisms)

 despite all his skill and coolness what truly made Ittō's story memorable was the presence of his son, Daigorō. Despite his age (4 at the end of the story), Daigorō is extremly sturdy and quite skilled, plus he has reached the Shishogan, a form of illumination that makes him completly fearless

Ogami Daigorō

Power Level: 2 (25pp/Sidekick rank 4)

Abilities: STR: 6 (-2), DEX: 8 (-1), CON: 10 (+0), INT: 8 (-1), WIS: 14 (+2), CHA: 10 (+0)

Feats: Attack focus 1 (Melee), Dodge focus 2, Fearless, Improved initiative 1, Sense Murderrous Intent

Powers:

Child (Shrinking 4; PF: Innate; Extra: Durantion 1 [Continuous], Normal toughness; Flaw: Permanent; 9pp)

Combat: Attack +1 (+2 Melee); Damage -2 (Unarmed), or by weapon of choice; Defense +3 (+1 Flat-footed); Initiative +3

Saves: Toughness +0, Fortitude +4, Reflex +2, Will +5

Abilities 0 + Skills 0 (0 ranks) + Feats 6 + Powers 9 + Combat 0 + Saves 10 – Drawbacks 0 = Total 25

Sweeeeet.... Itto Ogami. I liked a bunch of those mangas I got a few years back, though they ended way too many fights with the "Both guys take a stroke with their sword, stand there for a second, then one erupts in blood and collapses" scene. Ogami's sneakiness and willingness to cheat to win made it fun, though (luring a gun-wielding soldier to strip and go into the water to save the 'drowning' Daigoro; tricking a samurai into an honorable duel so his skilled retainers couldn't attack him as well; getting his son to shine a light in an equally-skilled rival's eyes to win a battle; etc.).

Thanks guy, I was really scarred about this build, Lone Wolf and Cub is my favourite Samurai comic so I wanted to do the character justice, no an easy task I have to say.
