-Cipher is a weird one. Having a near-same name as Doug Ramsey, she's a totally invisible character who was retroactively added into the Young X-Men roster, having been recruited by Cyclops years ago as a spy. She has the fairly unique power of being totally immune to ALL forms of detection, which made the retcon pretty easy (she's the one talking to Blindfold in all those scenes where it looks like she's muttering to herself). Now that Cypher has returned, we'll see where this character goes.

-Selective Total Concealment, plus Intangibility, plus an Immunity to Mental Detection. Not much else to her other than some minor Spy skills- I'm not even sure if she can really fight.

-Trance is one I'd never heard of, but surprisingly she's stuck around all this time- just not on a major X-team. A girl with a little less characterization than the others (she's 'culturally sophisticated'), she has a very complex grab-bag of powers that make her kinda hard to write for, I'd imagine, so she's kind of a back-up character to the Young X-Men.

-Trance has the fairly unique Alternate Form set-up that has the Projection Flaw, meaning she goes into a trance while her other Form going flying around, doing stuff. Unlike many Astral Form thingies, she can interact with the physical world. She can go Insubstantial, read emotions, detect energy, can't be Teleported against her will, Blast stuff, fly, and go incorporeal, which is a pretty big power-set for such a young non-combatant (especially with the all-time dirty cheap power Affects Corporeal Blast while Insubstantial). Despite that, she's still a PL 6.5, so she's not leading any fights for the time being.

Yeah, it finally happened- I ran out of room on my already-shrunk first page of Links to my Builds- just the MARVEL section is now too big to fit 600,000 characters!

So here's a little "Museum" of sorts, featuring my older builds that've either been replaced over time, or are otherwise too much stuff to fit onto my MAIN "Marvel" builds page.

-Tantra pretty much DEFINES 'minor character'. He showed up in only one appearance, harassing Bishop & Sage with some other X-Students, at Emma Frost's behest. He forced Bishop to kiss a tree before his shenanigans were caught, and he got put in his place. He's so minor that nobody ever really checked to see if he was dead- but he probably is. Humorously, he was also an ELEPHANT BOY, apparently having the worst luck in mutant history or something.

-Tantra's pretty cheap, since he only made a single appearance. He can force people to make out with each other (and other objects, if necessary), but apparently has to fire them out in little Energy Blasts, so it's a Ranged Attack he needs to make rather than the more effective Perception effect Emotion Control normally is. I threw in some of the powers from my Elephant build for the heck of it, just to flesh him out a bit more. Yes, Elephants have Tremorsense.

ERNST (Real Name Unknown)

Abilities: 24 / Skills: 4--1 / Feats: 1 / Powers: 33 / Saves: 4 / Combat: 8 (71)

-Ernst is another classic "Frank Quitely is a weirdo" character design, and an ingenious one. Think- someone drawn by Quitely who is actually SUPPOSED to look like they're ninety years old! Other than that, we know little about her, other than the fact that she's still living at the Institute, having not been de-powered. She's probably got the least characterization (mainly because you can't write Shipping-heavy stories about an old geezer... Rule 34 aside) of the entire X-Students class, though.

-Ernst is a bit odd for a Super-Strong type, since she's got a +10 Strength damage bonus, but is very small. I was gonna go "Compression" as an Extra to the Shrinking, but all the various numbers being thrown about (plus her weight doesn't seem to increase) made the math way simpler as a standard "Normal Stats" Permanent Shrinking, along with the Brick-type powers purchased separately. So she's a super-strong little girl who looks like an old lady.

-Cessily Kincaid is easily my favourite out of all the Hellions/New X-Men/Young X-Men/Whatever. She has a great look (not too many silver ladies in comics), fairly unique powers (despite being a straight T-1000 rip) that don't show up alot in comics, a sweet personality, and the great "I'm an outcast because I'm a monster" attitude that's always good for some angst. She even had some cute "Shipping" moments, getting a crush on Wither, as the only person he could touch without killing, but alas, he didn't feel the same way.

-The funny thing is, there's ALREADY been a "Mercury" in the X-canon, and it's someone with the exact same powers! One of the one-shot-only "Cerebro X-Men" (whom I've already statted) was a Jordanian assassin created by a crazed Cerebro with the same liquid-metal powers, flowing body and body-weapons. Very weird coincidence, since the guy is mostly-forgotten by now.

-Cessily is a fun little build, as most Alternate Form characters are. She has a batch of powers assigned around her Mercury Form, giving her Life Support, a high level of durability, minor Super-Strength (it's been shown so sparingly that I used Distracting to Limit it), Elongation, Super-Movement (she can stick to stuff, and can be impossible to trip), in addition to her attacks. As an attack, she can slash with long bodily-created weapons, lash out with a dozen of them at once, Trip, or Suffocate people, in addition to the base power, an Engulfing Snare. This is countered by her hefty Drawbacks, since she's blasted with Electricity A LOT. Note that her Blades are only PL 7, and only her weirder APs are fully-capped out at PL 8 (I originally had her at PL 9, but then I realized that made her quite a bit more powerful and capable that she's really shown as being). Otherwise, she's a sweet, good-hearted character with an assortment of Feats & Skills to back her up, and one of the better all-around characters of the Young X-Men group.

Interestingly enough, one of the reasons she may have been phased out was that Morrison was trying to reveal that Cassandra Nova lived on in Ernst's body before he got moved off of the title.

-Wolf Cub was a semi-frequent character in the X-Books, showing up to be lured into Maximus Lobo's "Wolf Pack"-type gang, where it was theorized that all the animal-powered clawed mutants were a new, separate species of mutant. Like most of Chuck Austen's ideas, it was ignored. Gleason, with that wussy name, didn't have much of a future ahead of him, as he was already packing one of the most generic power sets in all of comics (especially for Marvel), and so his days were numbered: Keeping his powers after M-Day, he was killed in the first arc of "Young X-Men", being slain by wussy villain Donald Pierce. He begged his teammates not to kill the loser, because "X-Men don't kill".

-Looking at pictures of him is always funny, because depending on the artist, he can look like just about anything. How animalistic he is (I've seen full-blown Wolf on Two Legs and 'person with lots of body hair'), how big he is (skinny little kid of four & a half feet versus big rippling-muscled man-wolf), etc. is all up for grabs, sorta like how Wolfsbane always ended up in her mid-range forms.

-Wolf Cub's another minor Animal Guy Build of mine, packing less of a punch than the usual ones (PL 7.5 on offense & defense), which is sorta how he ended up dying. He was never a major character, just a bit below the "Main" Young X-Men.

-Laurie is that ever-present kind of character in teen fiction- the blazing hot blonde girl who is nonetheless low in confidence and withdrawn :). Good ol' comics, TV & Movies- they'll NEVER let us look at ugly girls with problems! Of course, every time comics creates an authentically ugly girl character (Monstress, Pantha), they end up being "The Scrappy" of their respective teams, doomed to being hated the world-over by men & women alike, because nobody likes an ugly girl. EVER. Wallflower was an emotion controller like Dani was in the original New Mutants, and actually used one of my favourite concepts- the mutant who had trouble with uncontrollable powers.

-See, one of my MAIN beefs with the "New Mutants" revamp in the early 00s (and the New/Young X-Men in general) was that the heroes got their powers, went to school, and were an ass-kicking squadron of teens within a few months. They had costumes, rippling muscles, big boobs, battle plans, and could work over reasonably-powerful villains very quickly. Do yourselves a favour and read whatever '80s New Mutants comics you can get (they're really good)- the teens there are gawky, awkward, insecure, and almost all of their powers are complete weaksauce. Their flying guy couldn't turn corners, their strong guy got de-powered after five minutes, their Fear Caster couldn't control herself, their Possessor could take out one bad guy at a time, their Werewolf was barely stronger than a normal person, and nearly everyone worked for about FIFTY ISSUES before they were worth a damn in a fight. Nowadays, everyone's a bad-ass in Day One. So it was nice to see someone like Laurie, who had to work at NOT scaring everyone in sight with her powers.

-I had a surprising amount of difficulty with Laurie & her powers, actually. I mean, at their core, it's the Pheromones Power with the "Love Only" Flaw removed, and more of a Cloud than a Burst (or whatever it is they're using). But for the sake of showing what all the bits were about, I was gonna use the Emotion Control power with the Extras added on. But for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how Emotion Control turned to Pheromones mechanically. It's Extras seem to be Reaction +3 (three steps up from Standard Action), Area-Perception (Scent), with Love Only as a Flaw, which doesn't add up to 4 pp/rank like it's supposed to- it comes to 5 pp/rank, and allows for one less save than the power should (Perception gives a Reflex Save). The "Rules" forum (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=34147) has about ten or fifteen guys struggling with the same problem, so I know I'm not the only one, and there's about ten different ways guys have come up with 4 pp/rank out of this. It seems to just be a case of a really clumsy power description that someone just kinda threw out there, rather than really quantifying it all up.

-My solution? Just ignore the Pheromones thing entirely, and build a standard set from the way the character is using Emotion Control as normal. Laurie isn't touching her PL's max pp-cost anyways, so it's not terribly important whether a few pp are missing here or there, and I don't think there are any from what I can see either. It's a Cloud Area effect (dissipating the second round after it goes off) that she can pull off as a Reaction, Selectively ignoring her teammates (she got good enough at this later on to count this), but bad guys need to have the ability to smell (this is why people like Mercury are unaffected- she doesn't need to breathe). Wallflower has a very powerful ability (and can hit an even stronger effect at closer Range with an AP, as well as making people fall asleep), but not alot of defensive power- she's definitely a classic Mental Power type, faltering with the slightest amount of damage.

OK, so I shunted down Mercury by a bit (I realized that PL 9's a bit TOO tough for what's still an amateur hero), and Trance gets a bit of an upgrade, thanks to Thorpocalypse recognizing the Affects Corporeal part of her powers. There's benefits to actually knowing & reading about people who you're statting up, instead of going in blind like me :).

-Gloom is a one-shot character that can disable someone's eyesight (not with a touch, but as a Cloud- I misread some bio comments when they mentioned "nerve-dampening" qualities). He harassed Bishop & Sage along with Tantra, and I don't think he ever got another appearance. He probably died in the Bus Explosion of Character-Wiping, but we never got the info for sure. Likely, someone at Marvel just forgot about the little Jawa-looking dude.

-All I have to go on is a picture and a mini-description- he looks like he might be short in the pic, but I can't tell. Now THAT's a hard character to really define. Best just make him slightly weak, and use the Template in it's basest form for this guy. He's as minor-league as it gets, being able to blind people (best to use Dazzle Visuals) in an Area and that's about it. I gave him some Slow Fade to make him a BIT more potent (the victim will have to wait a bit longer to get his sight back), but that's it. Just a weakling, really.

-Specter (whose name is so close to the DC character's that he was doomed from the get-go) actually got to SURVIVE the Stryker Bus Massacre and live on, but he's still depowered. All that's known about him is that he's living with his grandfather (one of the few orphans with real family), and had a Shadow Form.

-Just a standard cheap Alternate Form power- apparently he CAN go Insubstantial, though none of the bio-sites list that as a power of his (stupid Wiki-fuelling...), so he's one of those rare guys who can go Insubstantial AND use Super-Strength. Though really, the first bit makes him kind of redundant with Trance (the OTHER Alternate Form Intangible Mutant) around. As it stands, he does as much melee damage as Spider-Man, but is only PL 5.5 on offense & defense, making him still a weak joke compared to any real super-competition.

-I liked Wind Dancer. She had a great personality (upbeat and caring), a nice backstory (her mother died, and her father- a rich ass-biscuit who didn't want any kids- didn't care about her, so she rebelled against him and latched onto his nicer, older assistant, Derek), and a cool power-set that you don't often see in the major leagues of heroes (Air Controllers are relatively common- Red Tornado, My Beloved Cyclone, etc., but very rarely are they big-time heroes). But she codifies one of the problems I brought up in my Wallflower build- she's WAY too powerful for an early superhero. She's skilled, smart, and so good with her powers she has unique little side-tricks (carrying words on the wind, and disrupting people's balance) by DAY ONE. Compare to Sam Guthrie, who had ears as wide as his head, and couldn't turn corners until the 25th issue of the original "New Mutants" team.

-Of course, she's one of the major New Mutant/X-Men kids to get de-powered after M-Day, getting rid of the cool subplot of her not being worth of leading the team (Prodigy was, but didn't want the job), and her thing with Hellion, who kept hitting on her despite her being annoyed by him (but there WAS an attraction deep-down). The inter-personal things like that are often much more interesting on teen teams than all the fighting, so it sucked that all those plots were dropped. She's in that new "New Warriors" squad of ex-mutants that use technological means to be superheroes again, but every time I look at that concept, it gets more and more sucky, and reminds me of the "Dork Age" of comics, with EXTREEEEEME heroes, terrible code-names and powers, and bad, gloomy art. Her Doctor Octopus get-up and short-hair make it look even worse.

-Sofia here's a PL 9 with some PL 8.5 tricks. She's talented, but a little untrained, and has a few APs to her Air Control like most windy people get (the Nauseate one is new, though). She can hear things from afar with the "winds" carrying words (not sure if that makes any sense at all- Earth Sciences was a pain in the ass for me to get through in College/University), and allow others to do the same, which is a unique little trick. Otherwise, she's a standard Flier/Elementalist who's a bit short on points. And yeah, it seems odd to have a teenage hero with very little experience as a PL 9 when even some AVENGERS and X-MEN are at that level, but that's how capable she was portrayed- she's not flawless, though, being a bit inaccurate and being an easy Glass Cannon to K.O.

Gloom actualy created an AREA of darkness that had a Dazzle effect wthat was SLOW fade. It wasn't touch range....Specter was Marvel's Obsidian..which menat he DID go intangible. And the Trance AND Cipher having the same power? Well, why do you think House of M happened for? Redundant mutant powers....that is why.

Wow, someone needs to edit Wikipedia & Uncanny X-Men's pages then, because their info on Specter is wrong. Looks like I missed part of their info on his Flaws too, so I re-edited it. Thanks for the corrections, though.

-Flubber actually looks pretty awesome. So of course he never got a name, characterization or even a revelation of what happened to him post-M-Day. He lost his powers (apparently a combo of Mr. Fantastic & jumping-people) and then vanished.

-Not sure if he actually possessed "Shape Shifting" (little is known about him, and Wiki says this, but it doesn't appear on other bios), so I'll go with a simple Morph, in addition to a small "grab bag" of assorted powers that come with having an odd bodily composition.

-Rain Boy is a simple little character with no backstory (and a similar status to Flubber- ie. the writers forgot about him apparently), who's either dead or de-powered somewhere. I do like his design & powers, though- there's a surprising amount of Wind Guys out there in comics these days, but NOT a lot of "Water Guys".

-Rain Boy's a Containment Suit-type of guy I'm quite sure, but not entirely dependent on it like Dummy (who died without his) was. So instead of making it a Device, I'll go the Wildfire route and make it a Drawback that he needs to suit to have form, but can still move around without it.

-Never really got into Jay Guthrie (yes, he's the same little brother of Sam that showed up a few times in "New Mutants" way back in the day to play guitar and be a kid and stuff). He was a little too proto-emo, whining & moping constantly over his dead girlfriend (they copied Romeo & Juliet for his backstory- but he recovered), playing the guitar while being sad & pretty, and he generally didn't get up to much. And then he hooked up with REVEREND STRYKER, telling him about the bus (I think he had some kind of good reason for it, but STILL) of de-powered students that was leaving, which basically makes it his fault that Tag and all those other kids died. And then he got his wings torn off (which killed off his Regeneration) and then he got shot and died. Wow, seriously, that is some Hank Pym-level screw-upsmanship right there. I am in awe of how bad this guy got it. I coulda done without Sam & Paige having a dead sibling to mourn (though really, X-continuity being what it is, I'd be surprised if they even mentioned it).

-Icarus has a bizarre grab-bag of powers, having Regeneration (but only if his wings are intact), the ability to mimic any sound/sounds he hears (thankfully I'd already built that power with Kylun of "Excalibur", and really, who the HELL ever thought we'd see that power used TWICE?), and Flight. So Jay's in pretty good shape, he can recover from most types of damage in time, and he can fight okay... but really, beyond a fairly good PL 9 Dazzle effect, he's VERY limited, especially compared to his buddies (he's only PL 7 defensively, and only in the air, and he has to be good at either that or offense at one time. That'll happen when all you have is some wings and self-healing powers.

-How in the living heck did it take comic book superheroes SEVENTY YEARS to create a guy with a major Healing power? Seriously- friggin' D&D used it in, what? The '70s? Video Games, other RPGs, etc. had all used this power a dozen times. Guys like Wolverine popularized Regeneration as a power as well. Dr. Mid-Nite's a DOCTOR type of healer I guess, but Elixir's something new. He can basically bring people back from the brink of death, which, in an era where people regularly take horrific 'realism-based' levels of damage from super-combat, is about the most useful thing ever. I still remember laughing when I read Joss Whedon's "Astonishing X-Men" and it revealed how the team survived their "SURELY Joss can't write them out of THIS one!" horrific beating at the hands of Danger (Kitty & Peter were IMPALED)- Josh just came in and healed them all! I Mean, DUH!! It's not even an Ass Pull- he'd been an established student for years! And I was all worried and crap!
-That said, they eventually went a little too nuts with him. Having him make out with a teacher (RAHNE!! NO! How dare they ruin your character!), then turn golden, then gain KILLING POWERS (to make him an offensive fighter, too), then get philosophical, then go through weird power-shifts... well, it's too crazy and they should've kept him as the healing-guy.

-Elixir is more costly (and a straight-up PL 9) than the other teammates, mainly because he can make someone erupt in a pus-filled explosion just by touching them (Death Touch/Drain Con), do a TON of stuff with his Healing (bring back powers, raise the recently-dead, regrow limbs and even organs, etc.), and has a few Feats & Skills to his name as well (particularly the ones he gained telepathically from The Beast- wonder why the REST of the X-Men don't just do that if it's so easy... stupid plot holes). He needs a Skill Check on the Total & Resurrection Extras of his Healing power, which adds up to a regular Flaw, but other than that, he's kind of all-around decent at PL 9.
