-Wither is an interesting little character, a notable aversion to the "Evil Powers for Evil People" trope so frequently used in comics, in that he had a Death Touch-ish power that completely wiped out all organic matter he came into contact with (no mention of how he EATS, as far as I read into "New X-Men"). Accidentally killing his father when his powers activated, he lived as an outcast (even at the school), until Hellion (despite being a big douchebag) of all people stood up for him and befriended him a bit. Wither ended up on Danielle Moonstar's New Mutants squad (back when the book was about a NM/Hellions rivalry and featured Dani as it's major character- neither concept lasted long), but switched to the Hellions when they tried to rescue him from the FBI Agents arresting him.
-Despite all that stuff (and a crush from metal-cutie Mercury), Wither had feelings for Laurie, aka "Wallflower", and competed with smiling douchenozzle Elixir for her feelings (losing out in the process). Part of this, and the growing darkness surrounding his abilities (eventually playing the "Evil Powers" trope straight), led him right into Selene's arms, and you know what happens to men around HER (ie. they get eaten). So we'll see where this newly villainous Wither ends up.

-Like most of the New X-Men types, Wither is fairly fragile and has few skills, but one major-league power (Corrosion is the touch-range Disintegration power, despite Wither's own name for his abilities)- a Continuous Aura (they're supposed to be Sustained, but his is quite obviously always active) Corrosion effect that wipes out only Organic matter. That's a big enough flaw for one thing, and he MUST be touching flesh-to-flesh, which means it's not quite the Aura that Johnny Storm or Electro have- you touch them unarmed, you get burned- that's it. But someone wearing gloves, a unitard, or even being punched by Kevin in his normal uniform would be unaffected. I consider that good enough for an extra Limited Flaw- since normal Auras affect people no matter what. It's similar to Rogue's Mimic powers in that extent.

Yay Wither! I always liked him. Anyway, I think you forgot to include that his powers are always active, whether or not he wanted to use them. I recall him accidentally decaying Wallflower’s arm when he though his powers where gone (Elixir healed her later), and being unable to wear clothes unless they where made of synthetic materials. Personally, I think he had it worse then Rogue.

-Beak was a neat little character- a legitimately ugly (to the point where he may be the most grotesque mutant character ever created), scrawny, weakling of a mutant with the crappiest powers ever, but was nonetheless kind of lovable. His scenes were even done well when he got translated to the "Exiles" team, frequently moping over how useless he was and how much he missed his family, but actually saved the day a couple times (he's the only one smart enough to figure out that the "Timebrokers" could just bring in a couple Hyperions from alternate worlds to fight the evil King Hyperion). He got depowered by M-Day, one of those cases where it was easily a BENEFIT, and went off with his wife Angel to the New Warriors team, gaining techno-powers and a bigger physique for some reason.

-Beak is a classic "Joke" character, being PL 5.5 on offense, and 6.5 on defense, because he's just this gawky, kinda-strong physical specimen with a baseball bat and a silly helmet on. His "Powers" are more "moderate bonuses"

-Bling is, of course, the daughter of two hip-hop stars, who's got a standard "Rock Build" going, plus some shrapnel. Not much is known about her otherwise, but she's actually one of the currently-powered mutant teens still active- she just doesn't get to do much.

-Bling is a pretty well-balanced PL 7, making her a VERY low-end Brick who really couldn't take out anyone that was any good at their job, but hey, it's something, and it makes her tougher than 2/3 of the Mutant Teens out there. There's considerable places a character with this power-set could go, as well-- more powerful Blasts, higher Strength, Earth Control, etc.

-Onyxx may be the coolest looking (and coolest-named) of the entire X-Students, which is funny, because he's not only redundant (Rockslide & Bling have almost the exact same powers), but a complete backgrounder, prone to "Those Two Guys" appearances with Bling in the back of scenes as recognizable "obvious mutants". He's a big, strong guy who's not that bright, but isn't a jokester like Santo is.

-Onyxx is a PL 7 like Bling, but WAY under-pointed for how tough he is. He's basically what a Powerhouse/Brick build looks like in it's infant form, being of Large size, Class 24 Super-Strength, Dense, Immovable and having some grappling abilities, but also being very, VERY inaccurate (most of the X-Students, you'll notice, have pretty crappily low Attack & Defense Bonuses, but Onyxx is even worse than the usual 'upgraded' student). Maybe one day, he'll be a big star, but with Santo around, I'd doubt it.

PREVIEW (Jessica Vale)

-Preview is, of course, Precognitive. That's it. Given the most minor of characterization (her sister is also a mutant X-Student, she won't engage in activities she thinks are predestined to fail, etc.), she lost her powers after M-Day, but is actually alive. Honestly, no thought went into her- she's just background material- she even has the same powers (but less so) than Blindfold (who, admittedly, was created later).

-Preview's so simple she's only 4 points above the standard Template- a little weaker, but smarter, and having 4 points of Powers. As simple as it gets; a total non-combatant.

-Another simple one, Network was Preview's sister- a "technopath" who could talk to machines, and died on the busplosion.

-The normal build, plus some smarts (she was voted "Most Likely To Be Rich" by her classmates), and the Datalink power, with an AP for Machine Control. Very simple, but I'm not sure if she has the "Animate Machinery" power- it seems she's just a hacker-type from the online bios, but anyone with further knowledge, feel free to help me out.

-Wow, a Muslim and Arabic character in comics who isn't a religious sociopath or otherwise crazy. Sooraya has some stereotypical qualities (she wears a hijab- NOT A BURQA- for instance, and she's from a desert landscape and has sand-powers), but actually has rational explanations for it, and is depicted as very nice and shy beyond that. And, in a nice choice, they HAVEN'T gone back on it and slutted her up with cleavage & tights (though her outfit is a LITTTTLE tight for someone interested in "modesty") with the next new artist on the book- giving us the most visually uninteresting superhero ever, but possibly the most unique one as well.

-Sooraya's powers are a bit unusual, in that it's an Alternate Form Sand-type dealie with an Area Blast/Corrosion thing. She kinda borrows a bit from The Sandman and other particulate types, but also has some unique tricks. She can authentically Fly, go Insubstantial (only at Rank 1- Dust/Sand is explicitly given as that in UP), Blast away at people with a Shapeable, Penetrating Area attack, use Corrosion on single targets, or just Suffocate them, Obscure large areas, and is Immune to a handful of things (Telepaths have a hard time picking her up, for example; and Magic does less damage). It also brings with it a swack of Drawbacks that only affect this form, so she saves points that way. Altogether, Dust is very unique and tricky to fight, and is one of the costlier Young X-Men, but has enough weaknesses to avoid making her too cheesy.

-Hellion is kind of an interesting one, in that he was designed to be an eventual villain (going over to the dark side), but it turned out the writers liked him enough to keep him around as a good guy. He's smart-mouthed, disrespectful and egotistical, which of course made him Emma Frost's favourite student (hence the code-name)- she sees alot of herself in him, and groomed him to be a leader & champion. He's a little annoying (in the 'this is an interesting character' kind of way), overtly flirts with any woman he sees (especially Wind Dancer- his rival), and now has a giant mixed-up crush dealie going with X-23 (yeah, THAT X-23), Surge and the absent Wind Dancer, which means there's all sorts of places to still go with this guy.

-Julian is all-out the most powerful "Young X-Man", as established early-on in the comics. He's a high-level Telekinetic, showing the powers of an experienced hero, rather than a rookie, like most young mutants (and ESPECIALLY compared to the old-school New Mutants team), and has a pretty Dynamic Array of TK and Area-Blasts, along with the standard Force Field & Deflection. It's a little under-AP'd for a lot of TK guys, but he's still new- it's more power than skill at this point.

-Match just kinda HAD to be there: "Fire Guy" is such an iconic, basic power-set of superhero books that it'd be funny if a mass batch of students with crap like "Technopathy" and "Precognition" and "Lizard Anatomy" didn't also include a Fire Guy in it. He's a pretty generic background character, not doing all that much, but he's still got all his powers, so that's something.

-A very standard "Pyrokinetic" build, complete with a partially active Aura that can be fully AP'd with his Dynamic Array, some Area Blasts, Fire Control, Immunity to Fire, etc. He's not too bad actually, but falls well short of where a professional superhero should be, and would get absolutely WORKED by one of the original New Mutants or an X-Man solo. He's one of the few "Non-Major" Young X-Men to nearly cost 100 points.

-Another nobody- Silicon's one of those one-shot X-Treme X-Men troublemakers, whose power is the ability to slip out of bonds and fly thanks to a body made of Silicon. No mention's ever been made of him post-M-Day, so he's probably dead on the bus.

-Just the standard Template, plus an odd combo of Flight & Immunity- I don't think he ever went fully-Insubstantial- he just flips out of any bonds or grappling.

-Slick really had only one purpose in the X-Books: to be a sad little story. He was a mutated dwarf whose powers constructed a kind of "fake persona", a charismatic, handsome young man that everyone around him liked. Quentin "Kid Omega" Quire uncovered his mistruths and exposed him in front of the entire student body, outcasting him. He was pretty much never seen again, but was confirmed as de-powered.

-An interesting little build, in that he's got Emotion Control & Illusion at Sustained Levels, and some Enhanced Charisma of all things. They're highly ranked because only people who knew for a fact what his powers were could see through them, but he tended to drop them upon their discovery. Not really a fighty character, just something that's unique to stat up.

-X-23 is one of those weird things- showing up in the "X-Men: Evolution" cartoon series (a couple seasons of an alternate-universe take with Storm & Wolverine teaching the rest of the major X-characters as teens in high school; it was better than it sounds, dealing with as much angst as *wink wink* nudges to continuity) as a Wolverine clone who took down most of the school with some Stun Discs or something. Though the show died young, the character proved popular enough for Marvel to immediately create her in the mainline continuity, pretty much like DC did with Harley Quinn, but like a YEAR later instead of fifteen, because Marvel apparently knows how to make money and DC doesn't. The character is pretty much non-stop angst and rage (crushes, cutting herself, murdering dozens, hating everything, etc.), but fans seem to have taken a liking to her, so like her or not, she's here to stay for a good long while. We'll see if she eventually turns into one of those "Dork Age" characters like Albert & Elsie-Dee to the Wolvie-verse, since she's appearing in dozens of comics nowadays, and keeps getting one-shots.

-X-23 fights like a different sort of Wolverine- still a Scrapper, but more finesse & speed instead of raw courage, determination and power. Wolverine would take in in a drawn-out fight, but she's good enough (especially with Rage and her Combat Feats) to give him a good fight, and even win once or twice. She has the same Regenerative powers, is stronger than she looks, but lacks the Adamantium Skeleton (and thus the Protection and most of the Drawbacks that come with it). She's much more powerful than the other "New X-Men" (she left the team eventually, joining X-Force), and costs a good bit more, since she's quite a skilled tracker, has many abilities, in addition to being a great fighter.

-Quill, for such a bad name, is a REALLY common one in Marvel Comics, showing up on three characters so far, including this one, a minor background guy in the X-Students roster. He was a Corsair, but then got caught stealing some test paper answers by Kitty Pryde, who sent him to be punished by Gambit (who, of course, being Gambit, taught them some REAL thieving techniques). That was about it for him, as he was De-Powered, then killed via Busplosion. Well, it wasn't like "Quill Guy" was a necessary power-set to show up in comics, and he likely never would've amounted to anything, but the fact that twenty named characters died in one casual moment of killing still seems amazing, even for comics (which drops teenage characters like flies- remind me never to join the New Mutants or Teen Titans EVER, 'kay?).

-A bit tougher than the usual run-of-the-mill student, Quill has an Autofire Blast (a rarity for this team) and a minor Aura effect, and is a bit better at fighting than some, but is still a pretty minor character. Note that there's a red-skinned uglier kid named Spike who was ALSO an X-Student, and had identical powers minus the "Shooting" part, but made no reappearances and is presumed dead.

LOA (Alani Ryan)
Class: Alpha Squadron, Young X-Men
Status: Alive

ST 10 DEX 14 (+2) CON 12 (+1) INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 12 (+1)

Skills:

Feats:
Equipment (X-Student Uniform- Communications, Protection +1)

Powers:

Corrosion 9 (Extras: Sustained +2, Aura) [54]

Saves:
Toughness +1 (+2 Uniform), Fortitude +3, Reflex +4, Will +2

Combat:
Attack +4, Damage +0 (+9 Corrosion), Defense +4, Initiative +1

Complications:
None

Abilities: 8 / Skills: 16--4 / Feats: 1 / Powers: 58 / Saves: 6 / Combat: 16 (93)

-Loa's a neat little character, a cute, tiny Hawaiian girl with a Matter Dissolution power. It makes her horribly redundant when ANOTHER Aura Corrosion guy is hanging around (Wither), but now that he's defected, it's okay. She really hasn't been given anything resembling severe characterization yet, just being lucky enough to survive Decimation, do a few things in a Limbo-based fight, and hook up with Elixir. Since I think the New/Young X-Men book's been utterly cancelled, most likely her appearances will be further limited- she was one of the least-used X-kids.

-Her Corrosion effect works kinda like Wither's, but isn't always on, and affects everything, not just organics. To make up for it, it's a bit weaker, and she's a lot less accurate, being (at best) a side character with very little combat experience. In addition, she can also Permeate through things at the same time, destroying them as she goes. You could make an argument for Insubstantial coming into things since her sole iconic picture is the demon's arm going THROUGH her, but I think that works best as flavour-text- the guy's arm was ripped apart, so it doesn't really matter if it went 'through' her like a "phasing" effect or not. I don't think she could avoid energy blasts or things like that while "Dissolving" stuff. So as it stands, she's a one-trick-pony with a really good PL 6.5 trick.

The good thing about seeing all these X-men student characters for those of us who aren't keeping up with the numerous X-titles is that they can make good source fodder for Captain Ersatz teen NPCs in a Hero High type game.

Back in the original New Mutants you would have been safe. Now though if the Xavier School comes knocking first question should be about student mortality rating and health & life insurance.

All in all I'd join the Runaways or Young Avengers and even that's not gonna guarantee a chance at living to see old age.
