Created With Hero Lab® - try it for free at http://www.wolflair.com!

Feat: Master Performer
The hero is a master of all forms of entertainment: they can sing, dance, act and play any instrument! As a free action they can assign up to 5 power points worth of Perform skills each round. They are so good, in fact, they can even perform under great duress. (This is the Variable [all of type: skills], Limited to Perform skills with Skill Mastery (all perform)).

Flaw: Winged -1
You fly by using your great wings to lift you aloft. When taking this flaw the maximum ranks of Flight you can have is 4. You lose the ability to fly when you are without an atmosphere, are in water or other liquids or if your wings are bound or restrained in some way. Your wings can be specifically targeted by an attacker. The DC to hit your wings is equal to your Dodge bonus +10. If your wings are hit by a damaging attack they have a Toughness save equal to halve your own, rounded down.

Sweetness! I have one question, though. Is Materia's name meant to coincide with the Latin translation? It makes sense when reading the description, but I still find myself needing ask.

Keep it up!

"Where is she?" Julia said. She wiped a wave of sweat from her forehead with a dark, damp handkerchief. Her brow still glistened with moisture and the salty, stinging sweat dripped into her eyelashes. The hotel room airconditioner rattled against the wall in a desperate attempt to expel cold air into the small, fetid room.

"Since we got here early Red went off on a nature hike, or fly I guess," Erik, the road crew manager, said. He took a long draught of his beer that had grown slightly tepid in the Lousiana sun. He had only taken it out of the ice chest about six minutes ago.

"When will she be back?" Julia, the venue manager, grabbed a beer from the ice chest placed it against her sweating brow.

"Dunno."

"Why does she do that anyway?"

"I asked her that once," Erik said as he swished his beer around, "she said 'I like to get acquainted with the land'. Probably went off into the swamp to talk to the trees and animals."

"Yeah right," Julia laughed and then paused, "but not really. Right?"

Erik smiled and looked at Julia as she continued to soak through her blouse.

"You do know who you work for right?"

Julia looked at Erik for a moment and then sank down onto the bed. "Damn it's hot."

Air rose up from the swamp rank with the smells of life, that which decayed, that which lived. The aromatic air above the vast dark forest buouyed the Red Horse up tinting hir wings a strange green-brown with swirls of yellow. The rosettes in hir mane, white gold magnolias, clinked together from the turbulance and whipped the long green mantle against hir back. The jewel that topped the Staff of Power, the Staff of the Sun, reflected the light from the afternoon sun in a myriad of colors. S'he gazed down into the dank depths of the swamp and chose three spots to land, and as they all seemd quite promising s'he used the only method she knew to choose between them.

"Hana, man, mona, mike;
Barcelona, bona, strike;
Hare, ware, frown, vanac;
Harrico, warico, we wo, wac."

The area hir thick, crimson finger chose was closer to north than the others, which were closer to the south and east of the country. Hir wide wings clipped back as s'he dove swiftly to spot. Rotted leaves blew away and vines swung about as the Red Horse fluttered in for hir landing. Hir thick hooves sank into the muck with a rude sound and a nasty smell that made hir nostrils flare. S'he stood there for a moment taking in the swamp, letting hir senses absorb the primordial beauty of it. S'he could hear the notes of a new song bubble up inside hir brain.

"Brown," s'he said to the air, "muck, vines, flowers..."

S'he continued hir musical musings as s'he began to walk slowly through the damp swamp. Hir progress was slow and considerate. Lift hoof with a sucking sound, drop it back in with a burping sound.

Sluck, burp
Sluck, burp
Sluck, burp
Sluck, sluck
Burp
Sluck, sluck
Burp
Sluck
Burp
Sluck, burp, burp

S'he found these funny sounds delightful and devised a sort of jig as s'he explored the wet land. S'he got hir wings into the action too and would combine the sounds hir hooves made in the brown muck with the fluttering of hir wings. S'he then made a great fluttering leap to make a huge plop down into the mud when the sound of a gun shattered the silence about hir.

S'he froze, hovering, above the swamp straining hir ears in the direction of the gunshot. S'he could now hear shouting, something fleshy hitting against something metalic, then silence. Hir wings carried hir, silently, to a spot not far from where s'he heard the disquieting noises. A smell like that of acid and dying dreams assailed the Red Horse as s'he neared hir goal.

The Red Hore slipped through a hole in the canopy of trees to land on the broad branch of a tree that had stood since the first days of man. Below hir there was a small island, around which brown streams flowed. Strung up from tree to tree there was a green and brown painted canvas tarp hiding the island away from the eyes in the skies. Under the cloth canopy there was a shed made from old, cracking wood with a rusting sheet metal roof leaned slightly to the left but still stood. A line of deadly smoke rose from a chimney made from an old exhaust and a bit of aluminum siding. A truck that was shockingly new compared to the shed beside it sank into the soft earth slightly from its own weight and from its grizzly cargo.

In the truck's flat-bed there was a figure covered in a black garbage bag. A trickle of red came from the bag and was filling the flat-bed's rain gullets.

The jewel atop the Sun Staff pulsed with the beating of its wielder's quickening heart. Hir wings unfolded and carried hir as silently as a sleeping child's breath to the filthy ground. A beer can was crushed under hoof and the Red Horse held hir breath for a full minute. There was no activity from the shed, no sign that the occupants heard hir.

Algodon's beady eyes peaked out from the surface of the muddy, polluted water and watched as the tall horse-man crept toward Jimmy and Bobby's shack. Algodon's toothy smile widened further. He had always wanted to taste horse meat.

The Fight:

The Red Horse and Algodon are about 30 feet away from each other.

Red Horse rolls Notice check: 1d20+10=25.
Algodon rolls Stealth check: 1d20+9=27

Algodon is unnoticed.

The Red Horse moves cautiously towards the shack, taking care not to step on any of the detritus laying on the ground. Hir ears pick up something like a gurgling sound. S'he writes it off as just a fish swimming in the nearby stream.

Algodon prepares himself to rush the big horse-man and bite his head off.

Surprise Round:
Red Horse is flat-footed; Defense 15.
Algodon will move to attack (All-Out Attack 4/Power Attack 4: Attack +10, Defense 12, DC 29), he rolls: 1d20+10=23. He hits!
Red Horse will save, s'he rolls: 1d20+6=25. S'he fails the save by 4 and takes a Bruise.

Red Horse will fly up to a tree and land. The tree is about 40 feet tall and s'he is about half-way up it.

In a move swifter than his immense weight would suggest Algodon launched himself at the Red Horse. The Red Horse caught the large, brown shape rushing towards hir and brought the staff up in hir defense. The staff took the brunt of Algodon's attack but not all of it.

The Red Horse stumbles back a few feet.

"What a horrid thing to do," s'he exclaimed and flew up and away from the crocodile man. S'he landed on a tall willow tree branch and set hirself to fight.

Round 1
Red Horse (HP 1, Bruise -1), Initiative 14 (1d20+2=14)
Algodon (), Initiative 7 (1d20+1=7)

The Red Horse will try to flatten Algodon with a localized downburst (Air Control). There is no attack roll as Air Control is Perception range and so doesn't require one. Algodon will attempt to stay standing by rolling against a Save DC of 22: 1d20+26=33. He saves!

Algodon will move to the tree and then will start climbing it, moving at half speed, (DC 15): 1d20+12=15. He succeeds the climb check! Algodon is about 15 feet up the tree.

Whirling the staff over hir head before snapping it rod straight at Algodon. A burst of air-pressure slammed atop the crocodilian menace but to no effect.

Algodon hisses at the Red Horse. He sprints to the tree and starts to climb.

"Just wait till I get up there!"

"I somehow doubt it's to sit with me K-I-S-S-I-N-G," the Red Horse mused.

Round 2
Red Horse (HP 1, Bruise -1), Initiative 14 (1d20+2=14)
Algodon (), Initiative 7 (1d20+1=7)

The Red Horse will use Plant Control to try and snare Algodon against the tree: 1d20+8=15. The Red Horse will use a Hero Point to re-roll: 1d20+8=24. The Snare hits! Algodon must save (DC 20) to avoid the snare: 1d20+4=11. Algodon fails the save by more than 5 and is entangled!

Algodon will try to break the grasping tree branches. The branches will Take 10 on the roll against Toughness Save DC 25. 10 + 10 Plant Control = 20. The save fails by 5 and the branches are Injured (-1).

Touching the staff to the tree, the Red Horse sent a pulse of hir will through it. The tree reacted to hir direction and sprouted new branches around where Algodon was clawing his way up. The branches wrapped him up tightly and the massive crocodilian could move not so much as an inch in either direction.

"Let me out of this," he snarled.

"You've been very naughty and need a time out," the Red Horse said, "and if you don't watch it you might get a spanking!"

Algodon roared and began to snap at the grasping branches. They were no match for his powerful jaws and many of the strong limbs fell away.

The Red Horse brandished the staff again to heal the broken limbs so that Algodon would remain trapped where he was.

It was then that a nugget of lead, one and three-quarters of an inch wide, came speeding for the Red Horse's head with a resounding POP!

O.o

OH NO! Someone shot at Red Horse!

And of course Algodon would see hir as food. Crocs love Zebra. Sometimes to the point of stupidity, referencing Pearls Before Swine.

Nice.

Author's Note: I'm going to be changing things up a bit. Instead of trying to get the whole fight out at once I'm going to do it in a serial format. Every round or every other round ending in a cliff-hanger. I'll try to have each installment up every other day or at least once a week.

The Red Horse felt a burning hot finger trace along hir back and pierce into the flesh of the tree s'he stood on. Warm wetness trickled down hir back; the blood soaked hir mantle turning it from green to brown. Weakness gripped hir in a vice but she was able to counter it.

"What...hit...?" s'he said numbly.

From his spot in the shack, Jimmy watched as the big horse-thing turned around trying to find the place the bullet came from. The windows were blacked out so it couldn't see him. Jimmy had placed the rifle in one of the many knotholes in the cheap shack's siding, lined up his shot and was about to send an ounce or so of lead into the thing's head when he heard the roar of a poorly maintaned diesel engine rev up.

"That sonavabich! Bobby!" He yelled out, cursing all the way as he reached the door of the shack and flung it open. He saw Bobby's bald head bobbing around in the truck as it hit one ditch or divot in the swampy ground. He sent a few shells at the truck, he missed purposefully this time as he didn't want to kill Bobby (their granddad would skin him for that) and neither did he want to disable the truck.

Jimmy cussed out the retreating four-by-four when he let out an oath that would burn the ears of a Marine Drill-Sergeant. Immense vines erupted from the soggy ground. One filthy green vine after another wrapped themselves around the truck's flatbed. Metal crumpled, the tires popped, the axle shot into the air like a rocket before crashing back down burying itself into the ground.

Bobby leapt from the truck, landed and began to sob.

"GetmeoutofthispleaseGodpleasepleaseplease!" He cried, praying and covering his head in his meaty hands.

Algodon watched this spectacle of mammal frailty with disdain as he once again pitted his strength against the grasping branches. He gained leverage for his next attempt, putting his thick, webbed feet against the tree trunk and began to push. He snarled and hissed as the branches strained against his scaly might. With a torturous shriek of splintering wood Algodon was free!

His claws grasped the tree trunk with new furvor as he scaled the towering the tree towards his prey. It seemed that Jimmy's shot had put the Red Horse off balance; he was bleeding and had one hand against the tree, steadying himself.

With a savage roar Algodon set upon his prey with wicked teeth and raking claws.

Round 3
Jimmy previously Aimed at the Red Horse and will now take his shot. The Red Horse is flat-footed (Defense 15). Jimmy rolls 18 for 22. He hits!

As this was an unexpected development (the GM just made it up to keep the players, and readers, in suspense) the Red Horse gets a Hero Point (Red Horse's Total HP: 1). The Red Horse rolls a 1 for hir toughness save (DC 20), spends a Hero Point to re-roll and gets 13 for 19. The Red Horse adds Injured -1 to hir condition.

Jimmy's partner, Bobby, is taking off without him in the truck.

The Red Horse uses Plant Control again to try and stop the truck from speeding away. The Red Horse will roll to snare the truck (DC 15) (rolls 7 for 15), succeeds! The truck is immobilized.

Algodon attacks the snare. Branches Take 10 on the Toughness save (20 - 1), fails! The branches break, freeing Algodon! Algodon will take a move action to climb the tree. He reaches the branch the Red Horse is on and the round ends there.

Background: Lady Shade woke up on a coroner's slab with the coroner lying dead next to her. She escaped and for years lived on the streets of Heliopolis, before joining the Black Guards. The Black Guards have promised to help her find out who she is and help her find a strange girl that seems to know who she is: Regina Mortis.

Description: Lady Shade has skin as white as alabaster and just as cold; her facial features suggest that she is of Indian descent. Her eyes are pale white with no visible pupil. Her hair is somewhat long and seems to shift between all black or all white. When she joined the Black Guards she was given a black skin-suit adorned with skulls along the neck-line. When she focuses her powers her skin takes on an opalescent luster.

Personality: Lady Shade is deeply confused as she cannot remember anything that happened to her before waking up in the morgue. She remembers how to speak English, how muons interact with anti-matter, the mating habits of geese and how to smash a man's head into his shoulders with her elbow. Her attitude tends to change regularly; she swings from icy matriarch to wild woman at the drop of a hat.

Powers: Her Death Stare (Drain Constitution) is pretty gnarly, being able to kill most normal humans with a single shot. By focusing she can just cause a wasting in their physical condition, her Withering Glare (fatigue). Lady Shade can focus her will/spirit/telekinetic power into body allowing herself to fly, increasing her strength or making herself more resilient to damage.

I am speculating on a new drawback, based off of the Monstrous hindrance from MSHAG:
*Strange Appearance: Your appearance is so different from the norm that it impacts how people perceive and treat you. This drawback increases the Difficulty Class for Bluff, Diplomacy and Disguise checks and decreases the DC of any Gather Information checks made against you. The intensity of the drawback is based on the severity of your appearance.

Minor (+/- 5DC): you can easily disguise yourself but if revealed then you suffer a +1 to the normal effects of the drawback.
Moderate (+/- 10DC): disguising yourself is difficult and and when you are revealed you suffer a +2 DC increase to the Difficulty Class of any checks made during that adventure.
Major (+/- 15DC): disguising yourself is almost impossible and when you are revealed you suffer a +3 DC increase to the Difficulty Class of any checks made during that adventure.
[are there any better ideas as to how this one should work?-ed.]
