Small Question

Postby Drascin » Mon Feb 15, 2010 3:29 am

Since I felt making a whole account in the Wolf Lair forums for a simple question would be a bit redundant, I hope you don't mind that a prospective buyer asks a little question here...

So, I'm interested in buying Hero Lab. It's a bit expensive, as far as character editors go, but it seems wonderfully functional. I read some of the material in the official page about how the licenses work, which seems fair enough - two licenses given, you can update them if you change computers, which is useful given I intended to buy a new one in about a month... but then I find this

If you already own Hero Lab and want to extend your license for one or more years, click here. License extensions are only sold through our online store.

...which makes me pause. Nowhere else a time limit is implied, much less a time limit that requires you to pay to renovate. But this seems quite inequivocal. So, is there a time limit on the license, and if so, how much does it cost to renovate? I can't find anything else on this matter in the site itself.

*facepalm* They really need to fix that bit of text. For Mutants and Masterminds, the license will not expire. Some of the game manufacturers (I want to say that White Wolf and Wizards of the Coast are two) have required that their licenses have time limits. I use neither of those properties, but I seem to recall seeing that the 4E package allows one to download updates from the same location as their Character Builder, so that could explain the time limited license.

So, short answer, M&M will not require renewal. Colen has said as much on the boards, but the posts eventually tick down. They need to clarify the text on the webpage or at least add a FAQ entry.

Thanks. And sorry if I'm asking an extremely frequent question, then. I didn't think of using Search.

It's not so frequent, but if I recall Colan has recently said that hero lab doesn't require you to renew your license. However some of their products do which leads me to believe that description is written from a form. That would explain the potentially confusing text.

They've got someone someone looking into changing the text so as not to confuse people.

Whoops! I forgot to remove that text when copying the page from one of our other products. >_<

Hero Lab does not have a yearly license fee - the purchase & licensing pages should now clarify this.
