Seriously though, a band of hot young girls who play their instruments in bathing suits?

Because the music industry is geared toward giving teenaged boys Metallica and Megadeth. C'mon, L7 and Lita Ford and Kittie are fringe tastes. Plus, Kittie, when they came out, made jailbait look old and withered.

Still... Josie and the Pussycats were an epic crush for me.

-Valerie debuted with the "Pussycats" concept, being added to the band at it's inception, replacing snarky bookworm Pepper. She was a MUCH bigger deal at the time (nowadays she's just "The black one"), since she was the first black Archie character, one of the first recurring black characters (since the offensive WWII era) in comics PERIOD, and usually depicted as the smartest and most streetwise of the entire Pussycat crew. This was advanced even FURTHER in the cartoon series (where she was the first recurring black TV toon ever), where she was a technical genius and inventor! Of course, nowadays that just looks like pandering and Positive Discrimination, but for the time, it was pretty epic.

-Valerie's still kind of the Deadpan Snarker of the team, making comments about Alex, Alexandra and Melody for the most part, but is otherwise pretty basic. She's more costly than Josie herself (the main character!) because of her aforementioned smarts occasionally making it's way into the comic series.

-Rounding out the trio is Melody, the Fanservice goddess of the Archie universe until Cheryl Blossom came around in the mid-80s. Drawn by DeCarlo as pretty much an idealized, ridiculously curvy creature (a hippie club owner described "That thing her head rests on... it's gangbusters! Like, WOW!"), but alas, she was developmentally disabled. She was the source of a ton of "Dumb Blonde"-type jokes, cat-calling, guys falling over themselves to impress her, and general Big Moose-type "misunderstands an old saying or what someone just said" gags. They never really developed her character too far beyond that, but what the hey? She's the sex appeal, even going back to "She's Josie! #1"

-Melody comes pretty cheap since she's so blatantly giblet-headed, but she's got some unique stuff. She's got the highest Attractive/Bishoujo rating in the Archieverse, and even has a POWER representing her unwilling ability to turn men into supreme morons at the sight of her (a personal favourite Josie story features Melody being stalked by a young boy who fell in love at first sight- the girls actually find it adorable, and Mel even KISSES HIM, sending him into orbit. Alexander admits that'd probably be his reaction, too). It's pretty cheap since it's Limited across the board, but hey, these girls are NPC-types for the most part. I left in her Danger-Sense from the cartoons for the hell of it.

-Alex is kind of a weenie, and not that great a character. He was pretty much just a Reggie Mantle rip-off at first, but was kind of "The Veronica" as well to Albert's "Betty", as he was constantly scheming to get Josie away from Albert and into his arms, using his wealth, etc. How many rich people ARE their in the Archieverse anyways? I sure as heck didn't go to school with any millionaires' kids. When the "Pussycats" concept debuted, Alex was shifted into their namby-pamby wuss of a manager, constantly scheming to get gigs and publicity for the girls, and his Josie-chasing too a backseat for the most part (I can't even remember any issues themed towards him trying to further bone her). For some reason, his being voiced by the guy who did "Shaggy" in the Scooby-Doo cartoons made him an EXACT copy of Shaggy, right down to the hippie speech patterns, though his outfits were even GOOFIER.

-Alex isn't too great at many things, and even has lower Ability scores than most of the "Generic" boys in Riverdale. His Pop Culture & Business Knowledge are both okay, so he's a passable Band Manager (though he still puts them into awkward situations or embarassing mishaps). He's also a bit of a coward, but that's not really shown in his stats other than his low Will Save.

-Man, Alexandra was a bitch. Being a rip-off of Veronica Lodge, Alexandra was conceited, scheming and nasty, essentially amplifying all of Veronica's negative traits while keeping NONE of her "Heart of Gold" routine, while having the GALL to not be a fanservicey show-off like Ronnie was! The GALL, I say! Alexandra schemed to split Josie off from first Albert, then Alan M., but was never shown to be so much as a threat- all the boys ignored her, as her Charisma was so low that she was immediately off-putting, and she was never close to as hot as the other girls. The same goofiness didn't abate during the "Pussycats" years, as Alexandra followed them around, tried to take over the band, feuded with Josie & her brother (who was more of a minor annoyance than an enemy).

-Alexandra is mostly unskilled and untalented, being a huge bitch who fails to hide her bitchiness from everyone. She IS a limited Mage, though- a period during the drug-induced 1960s featured her and her cat Sebastian being revealed to have magical powers, and this aided her schemes- kind of. Most of her stuff tended to backfire.

-Alan M. was the final creation that cemented "The Pussycats" concept into Archie once and for all. Replacing Josie's lame boyfriend Albert, Alan M. was basically Male Fanservice, being a super-handsome, well-built roadie who dated Josie (despite them never really fawning over each other ever) and was the target of Alexandra's scheming. And seriously- why in the crap was he always called "Alan M."? Even by his FRIENDS, no less! I mean, anyone I called with their last initial tended to be one of a group- but these guys knew ZERO other "Alans". His last initial was completely superfluous! Stupid name...

-Alan M. is a pretty big, strong guy- he can provoke Melody-esque reactions in girls sometimes, but is otherwise just a strong, handsome dude with some basic skills. He's easily one of the more expensive Archie characters, though.

Re: Jab's Archie Builds: Bingo, Josie & The Pussycats Cast

Postby Jabroniville » Sat Apr 03, 2010 10:25 pm

Okay! That's about it for the Archie builds (one more left- a certain teenage witch), so I'll announce the next batch of stuff: MORE LAME MARVEL VILLAINS!!

Because I just can't get enough of statting up loser characters. This time around though, I'm going to be posting up some characters I did a long time ago, during my initial surge of character building. Basically, I wanted the entertainment of re-doing some old stuff, and complaining about their lameness all over again. So it's time for some updated Mutant Liberation Front and Dark Riders builds! This will actually give me the chance to stat out a fully-powered Apocalypse (my old one was a weakened, X-Cutioner's Song era one).

Before those two sets of lame characters, I want to stat up that most famous of villain teams... THE PACIFIC OVERLORDS!! Yeah, I would've never heard of these guys if it hadn't been for a single issue of "Avengers West Coast" I picked up eons ago when I was just starting out in comics. I saw a couple of these guys (all minions of Dr. Demonicus, a former Godzilla Comics character until Marvel dropped the rights) way back then, and again in a much later issue (where they all died at once because they were lame). I've thought off-and-on about statting them for a while now, and now's as good a time as any.

The Pacific Overlords Roster:
Dr. Demonicus (evil biological-scientist)
Kuroko (ninja shadow powers)
Cybertooth (name says it all, really)
The Big One (baby hyper-accelerated to a huge monster)
Jawbreaker (strongman)
Irezumi (Yakuza-esque guy who absorbs essences or something)
Kane (machine controller)
Typhoon (wind controller)
Pele (fire controller)

-Sabrina the Teenage Witch debuted in 1962, featuring as a one-shot. She proved popular (and actually predated the "Magical Girl" concept in manga & anime by a NUMBER of years), and eventually became a recurring character, getting her own magazine and even a cartoon series. Her popularity's come and gone over the years, with a MAJOR peak in the late 90s with her TGIF sitcom on ABC. It was rather inventive and had some cutesy humor, and was REALLY well-respected critically at the time (Entertainment Weekly was in love with it), though it utterly fails to hold up on almost every level nowadays that it's gimmicks look even MORE cheap, the jokes are all passe, and nearly all the episodes are lame moral fables about what happens when you use magic to get out of trouble, but what can you do? The fact that they kept cycling through the "Sabrina's Dorky Best Friend" actresses/characters over the years, and some reputed Diva-ish behaviors by star Melissa Joan Hart didn't help. For some reason, I always thought Caroline Rhea was hot on this show, though. It DID have one of the more iconic "Mean Popular Girl" characters ever in Libby, so famous she had her own trope named after her on TV Tropes. Me, I could never figure out how someone this clearly nasty and bitchy became the most popular girl in school anyways (in my High School, the popular people actually tended to be NICE more often than not. That's how they GOT POPULAR IN THE FIRST PLACE).

-Anyways, her comic's been all over the place as well. It went for DECADES with a simple concept: Sabrina tries to do good deeds while her Aunts try to get her to do bad ones. She has crotchety old Aunt Hilda, chubby doddering Aunt Zelda, and understanding Cousin Ambrose living with her, alongside Salem, who may or may not have actual magical kitty powers. Della the Head Witch (aka Miss Fanservice thanks to the always-awesome Dan DeCarlo on art) rounds out the magic cast, and then there's Sabrina's mortal boyfriend Harvey, who's pretty much your typical male Archieverse protagonist- kind, understanding, but thick-headed and clumsy. He's pretty much constantly the victim of horrible acts, either via Aunt Hilda or his own fault. Sabrina as always must keep her magical powers hidden from the world, though her Aunts don't seem to care.

-Fast-forward to the sitcom's huge success, and suddenly they changed everything around, somehow failing to even copy the sitcom that well. Sabrina's Aunts suddenly shifted into an idiotic-looking green-haired hipster and a stodgy 'modern woman', somehow failing to match either the originals or the sitcom versions. Cousin Ambrose got a nasty case of Chuck Cunningham Syndrome alongside Della and Sabrina's "Magical Classmates" (like Eyeda the eye-headed girl) and vanished forever, leaving us with a more generic comic. It failed Blade-style to turn it's newfound Pop Culture Notability into something tangible, and so the comic's bounced around over the years. It recently went "Manga Style" before getting cancelled AGAIN, as Archie Comics seemingly gets desperate.

-Sabrina herself is actually a balanced PL 5 (75) build, but lacks defensive abilities. These are just some powers I've seen used in the comics- she very much uses the "Whatever the writers feel like" school of Magic (the kind GMs should avoid their players using... you need the banhammer with these ones), but this is all either recurring stuff or things I just thought up off the top of my head- she uses the TK, Blast and Teleport powers the most, flies a Magic Broom (thought those could possibly also be Equipment for how easy Witches just buy new ones), has a really good Bluff score (she needs it, hiding all her spells from Harvey), is un-aging, and generally likeable.

Around the time Sabrina went to college and they changed the opening theme away from the earwormy original to that wretched vocal... thing, that was when the show hit the ramp, cleared the shark and crashed into the stands, killing dozens.

Damned cute pic you found for her, though.

I'd like to know more about this, myself, as I had to have seen every episode as a hatchling, but I don't remember that at all.

Captain Planet is awesome, though, and that's all there is to that. I'm a huge naturalist, and very much disgusted with the way people treat our planet (and it's coming back to haunt us now), and besides that...

"By your powers combined... I am Captain Planet!"

... is just an awesome line.

His offense consists of grabbing villains who can't hurt him physically, and tying them up in recyclable wrap or something, then throwing their polluting factory into outer space. His stats advantage over the other Planeteers make me question just why they didn't keep him around ALL the time, but I think there was a Time Limit on his summoning.

Also, that's funny.

I like your build of the good Captain, Jab!

Also, I like your Godzilla. My favorite was the Heisei Series, particularly Godzilla vs. Biollante, though some day I'm going to write up the most powerful Godzilla yet, the one from Final Wars. I liked his look there and the power level he displayed. Biollante is still my favorite movie, though.

Certain things in that movie, like the look he gives after he rips Biollante's piercing tentacle out of his hand, right before he unleashes thermonuclear hell, or when he rises from the volcano, or melts the synthetic diamond, or survives the doses of ANEB that are supposed to be fatal, or best yet... when Biollante's unbelievably huge second form thunders toward him, and the King of the Monsters just roars up at his foe with only rage and defiance and then meets big B in head-on battle. Great stuff!

What PL would you put Godzilla and Biollante at for that movie? What about the beefed-up-but-melting-down Godzilla from Destoroyah? What about Final Wars?

Geez, TLK, it's like you were reading my mind, knowing that I planned on doing Heisei-era builds in the near future after my current sets are all done :).

I've actually seen relatively few of the modern Heisei movies (the Battra one, "Godzilla 2000" and Final Wars) compared to the old school stuff, but from what I've seen, the Kaiju are much larger (I think 50% as large were the official numbers), their attacks more varied, and Godzilla himself had recieved a MEGA-boost equivalent to Regeneration, because he was now beating guys like frickin' GHIDORAH by himself, when back in the day he needed help.

For PLs, though, I figure each one gets an upgrade of a PL or two against their old form. Ebirah likely stays the same because HUMANS killed him in Final Wars, but Mothra, Rodan, etc. get upgraded to PL 15 at least, Godzilla would go from PL 15 to 16-17, Ghidorah likely stays the same (he went from 'fighting seven monsters' to 'losing to Godzilla one-on-one) at PL 17, and Biollante, Destroyah & Space Godzilla are all MASSIVE PL 17-18 guys.

His whole schtick was that he had some otherwordly Lifestone, which he used in tandem with his genius in genetics and radiation to form an army of super-monsters that were frequent enemies of the King of Monsters. When Godzilla's series was cancelled, Demonicus was transferred to an Avengers West Coast villain, threatening the team with his own group of morts, all with powers bestowed by his Lifestone energies now empowering humans.

-This is a guy I always felt deserved a bigger push, but that's mostly because I thought his costume was AWESOME as a kid. All purple with a skull face and a giant cape- in my own "Fanfic"-style childhood stories of the Avengers, a Demonicus lookalike called "Dr. Skull Face" (never said I was original) was their Big Bad, replacing the Red Skull as a Cap enemy and basically acting like Doctor Doom. This guy didn't have anywhere near the longevity though, and his entire group died around him in the final portion of his AWC run. He was presumed dead for over a decade until he popped up as a Raft inmate, and now he's a part of The Red Hood's gang. I have no idea why, though- he's never been remotely a physical powerhouse and has always been a scientist/mastermind type, so him being involved in mass battles just feels 'off'. Not that he's done anything other than peer in the background at all times.

-Demonicus is a PL 8 with a ton of scientific know-how (especially in the fields of Physical & Life Sciences, which he also has Ultimate Skill in) and a pretty good Blaster, but he's hardly a combatant. He's far better off behind the scenes, developing new henchmen (or gigantic supermonsters) and being a pain in the ass that way. He's smart enough to bestow a ton of powers onto different people, make Kaiju strong enough to challenge Godzilla, and build a giant super-drill that tossed magma to the surface of the ocean, creating a new island for himself to live on.

-Kuroko was the "Team Ninja", being a boring design of a Japanese chick in a black onesie who smacked people with a bo staff while they couldn't see her. She followed Dr. Demonicus around like a lovesick puppy most of the time, and even stuck with him after their mind-control boxes were removed, such was her toadying. Pretty much a perfect example of a low-end Stealth/Martial Artist villain build, lacking some well-roundedness. She was a royal pain to several Avengers in the Pacific Overlords stories, but usually didn't get more than a couple shots in before someone (Typhoon once, US Agent another) drilled her upside the head and ended her fight. She's accurate and hard to hit (especially when invisible or with her Dodge Bonus in effect), but she doesn't do a lot of damage, and she goes down with comparatively little punishment. Not a bad team player, though.
