You know, the funny thing? What always kept me from taking Stryfe seriously as a villain was his helmet. I mean really...how many ear/fin/things does one piece of headgear need? Walt Simonson Asgardians would have been embarrassed to be seen in that thing (and Baldur's helm was a piece of work).

Hmmm...and Reignfire wasn't created by Claremont? Are you certain? That's the sort of ridiculous evil twin-from an evil alternate future-sporting new, souped up, evil powers-thing, that good old Chris is always doing. the only thing that's missing is to have John Byrne resurrect him to relieve his death of any real meaning or pathos it might have had. 8)

-Foxbat's a classic situation for a team. One distinct pose (arms crossed to show off his spikey reverse-talons), something about being tough of survival, and then he promptly gets his ass kicked. He's kinda just some red guy. He's actually so terrible that he was called out by the Riders' last boss (Genesis) and killed because he himself was way too weak and un-worthy to be on the team. And that is just SAD.

-Foxbat's a wuss. A cheap Scrapper-type build, he can't really beat ANYONE solo with any kind of consistency, but in a mass combat he's alright. He's just a simple PL 8 guy who's got pretty good physical abilities across the board- official stats say he's got "Super-Strength", but honestly, so many mutants are said to have that, yet they don't ever LIFT anything or even one-hit K.O. somebody. So you know what? Foxbat is ST 24. That's actually REALLY high (more than most any D&D character), does +8 damage when added to his Talons, and with some Super-Strength, gives him just enough to be superhuman. Being as strong as Captain America IS kind of a super-power anyways.

-Spyne was added onto the team at a later date, but only lived through two adventures: once against Cable & Domino, and the next against Wolverine & Cannonball. A crazed Wolverine killed this reptilian guy, then used his severed tail to kill Deadbolt. Not much of a run for this guy, huh?

-Spyne is ridiculously similar to Foxbat in many ways (makes you wonder why they bothered). He's another semi-super-strong Claw Guy, but he has a unique aspect with his tail. He doesn't come across as particularly tough, especially since Wolvie killed him as part of a GROUP of other guys, so he's still only PL 8.

Hah, yeah, that helmet was nuts. I thought it was OK as a kid, but really, anything that is COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE to draw from the side is probably something you shouldn't be throwing into a comic. How many straight-on angles did we HAVE of this guy?

And yes, I am very certain Reignfire was created by Fabian Nicieza & Tony Daniel. Surprising, I know :).

Hey, guy, Helspont called. He wants his design back.

DEADBOLT
Status: Killed by Wolverine
PL 8 (96)

ST 16 (+3) DEX 14 (+2) CON 18 (+4) INT 10 WIS 10 CHA 8 (-1)

Skills:

Complications:
Responsibility (Survival of the Fittest)

Abilities: 16 / Skills: 16--4 / Feats: 10 / Powers: 30 / Saves: 6 / Combat: 30 (96)

-They had to be nuts when creating this guy. A walking, talking SKELETON that throws his own bones at you as an attack? Just crazy. Perfect for this team, too. Another nobody beyond his appearance and powers, Deadbolt was decapitated by a gone-feral Wolverine, who used his head to lure Barrage to his death.

-Deadbolt is pretty much a combination of the Skeleton's powers in standard M&M rules, along with an actual CON score and the "Throwing Bones" power (every time I type that, I picture Jeff Smith's "Bone"). He's only PL 7.5 as he's kind of a useless git in combat and got killed super-easy, but he's freaky to look at, and reasonably accurate for a scrub with his one attack.

-Good old Apocalypse is pretty much the "Big Bad" of the X-characters, but not really. See, Magneto is less of an overall threat, but is WAY more of a personal foe to the team, given his relationships with them and how he used to be Headmaster and all that. Apoc has this great concept of a Social Darwinist who wants to kill all the weak (very unique for a villainous calling- most are just standard Dark Lord types), but his character just never developed beyond that. He's just this big generic "MOO-HAH-HAH I AM SO MIGHTY!" guy with zero subtlety and tons of ass-kick. He has the worst henchmen in comics (The Dark Riders & the Four Hoursemen), all his REALLY cool minions turn good again (Archangel, Hulk as War, Wolverine as Death), and his worst enemy is Captain 90s himself, Cable.

-This is odd for a guy who debuted as X-Factor's key bad guy. He's gotten some MAJOR power upgrades since then (since X-Factor was like a group of five PL 10s at the time, and now there's five billion X-Men with many PL 11s on the roster), and revealed secret cabals like "The Clan Akkad", unleashed morty villain groups on the comic book world, etc. He's been the main villain of a few events (the really disappointing "The Twelve", which took YEARS of hints and turned them into "gather 12 guys for a big convoluted machine to make me a God"), the overwhelming ruler of at least TWO continuities (Age of Apocalypse & Cable's Future) and the boss of a big video game, but he's always been just a bit too mediocre for both the X-Men (Magneto is bigger), and the Marvel Universe in general (Thanos, Doom, Mephisto and others are all way more hardcore).

-Apocalypse is kind of hard to stat up. He's PL 12 in some ways, and PL 13 in others, but he's FAR more dangerous than his PL implies. His Shapeshifting allows him to mimic dozens of powers, modify several of his caps at-will, Grow, etc. His Fortitude & Will Saves are incredible, he's nigh-impossible to mind-fry, he hits harder than The Thing but is more accurate, and even worse, he REGENERATES from nearly all harm, often quite quickly. This means that it's virtually inconcievable that somebody could put him down for the long count, as even the worst damage will be nullified in minutes, leaving him just as strong as before. Talk about a Teamwrecking superstar- a weakened Apoc (as in NEAR DEATH, constantly dripping off flesh, etc.) beat the living snot out of Beast, Storm, Colossus, Iceman, Quicksilver & Archangel at once... though he later lost to the wussy Dark Riders after a bunch more ass-kickery.

All that power and still a douche-bag. IMHO, both the Living Monolith and the Sphinx (female version) were better "ancient egyptian style villains", who plague the modern era. Apocalypse is cool, in that "if you can draw a Walt Simonsen design, you're golden" kind of way, but, my vacuum has more villainous personality...just ask my dog.

I don't know, I like him a lot. Ole' Apocalypse will always have a special place in my heart from fond memories of Saturday mornings spent crouching on the floor in front of the family room couch watching the old, early 90s X-Men cartoon with my brothers (well, while they weren't fighting with eachother or me) while mom whipped us up something yummy for breakfast...pancakes, as often as not. :D

-HardDrive (once called "Mainframe") is the leader of the Dark Riders whenever they're between actual GOOD characters to lead the entire team. He's a pretty boring machine-controlling computer/man hybrid that tells the boys what to do and generally doesn't fight on his own. His powers are mostly things I've read in summations and online bio-sites: the guy fights so rarely I've pretty much never seen him hit someone. He's a PL 9 (135) guy who's got more Skills & Powers than a normal Dark Rider, but still is kind of a pushover, especially defensively.

-Hurricane is easily the worst-off of his team- unoriginal dime-a-dozen elemental powers, a nothing visual appearance (a ripped guy who looks like a failed "Mad Max" villain design), and a death very soon after his debut, which mostly consisted of him losing to other characters anyways. He was so bad he was chosen to be knocked off when Wolverine rejected his adamantium skeleton (which led to his brief "No-Nose Wolvie" form), sending multiple shards of the metal flying everywhere, pincushioning this loser bastard in a single panel. Nothing really new here except for his "Disorienting" Burst, kinda like a Ranged Stun, which isn't actually that bad. He's PL 8 except for the Air Control power, which brushes people off at +9 intensity.

-Barrage was always the defining character of this team, to me. While the rest of the group was pathetically one-note and full of boring character designs, here was this yellow guy with flowing hair AND NO HANDS. He just had these giant battle-cannon thingies where his hands should be. Yes fans, this means that Apocalypse, a guy who's entire credo is "Only the strong must survive" literally thinks that the future evolution of our species will be advanced by a guy who can't wipe his own butt without assistance. Seriously, a no-handed super-character... I'm all for equal opportunity, but this guy just flat-out sucks.

-He's PL 9 unlike most of his buddies, which helps to make up for his general suckiness. His Blasts are actually QUITE powerful (Wolverine announced that his ribcage was "shattered" after being hit by one.. how this would happen to a guy with UNBREAKABLE BONES I will leave up to Fabian Nicieza to explain), and can fit anyone in his targetted range into their path, so he's one of the best long-range fighters on his squad.

Re: Hard Drive...you'd think that the "strongest" machine hybrid would be solid state at the very least. this guy's got wires going everywhere.

Re: Hurricane...makes a better drink than a super-villain.

Re: Barrage...I give up.

It's nice that the brought the bleachers along for that group shot though. Otherwise we wouldn't be able to see all of their striking and original costumes.

As for the shattered ribcage...Wolvie's an X-character which means he's given to hyperbole, or maybe he was just trying to say something nice, to boost Barrage's self-image.

Just finished rereading the X-cutioner's Song.,.. fun stuff.

I have to agree with RhimeFyre- I do like Apocalypse. There is just some dark appeal to the ancient evil, although I think he can be wrote better... Also- the idea of him culling and manipulating humanity and mutantkind could be played up to a degree that could surpass Magneto and most other villains if done properly...
That kind of writing would be better suited for a story of grand proportion instead of a reoccurring bad guy though.

Yeah, X-Cutioner's Song was great fun. Stryfe is a little tiring now that I'm older and can recognize pseudo-philosophical stuff and emo pouting better, but it had TONS of awesome fight scenes in it, as well as being one of the only times you saw four X-groups allied at once. The X-Force (vs) X-Men & X-Factor issue was a CLASSIC all-out brawl between hero teams, even if it was mostly the X-kids getting the snot beaten out of them.

As a side-note, I'm also working on a Sugar Man build, since he's semi-related to Apocalypse-based stuff. Only issue I'm having was his size alteration- I know he could shrink, but some sites say he can grow, though I've personally never seen that. Can anyone else confirm that he has Growth AND Shrinking as powers?

its hard to tell (dude's built like MODOK), but his default size looks to be roughly that of more hulk-like depictions of colossus (IE: size large)
Kreuz Control Promotions: over 2800 builds served, and counting...
