Re: OUBLIETTE: New Vindicators and Fairy Tail

Post by Michuru81 »

I might be able to do something about that...

This semester is almost over. After a last test in Math and another speech in Communications, I have finals and then should actually have some free time to bombard these boards with my blathering. ;)

#231: Stratocaster

STRATOCASTER (Power Level 8)

Real Name: Lester Paul Gibson
Height / Weight: 6’4” / 168 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Blonde (with Black streaks) / Green
Place of Birth: Winthrop, Massachusetts (January 8, 1985)
First Appearance: New Vindicators #24

Physical Description: Stratocaster is a tall, lithe man with lean muscle on his frame. His face is gaunt and perverted by the work of a body artist named Tyrone: in his ears are spacers and three metal spikes are in his lower lip. His blonde hair is worn in a Mohawk—the tip of which is dyed black; a long, blonde braid hangs down his back, to his waist. The sides of his head are usually shaven to reveal the skull depicted on the cover of the Velvet Underground’s album ‘White Light/White Heat.’

Typically, Stratocaster is garbed in black or in leather. He has been known to accessorize oddly—usually with chains, wrist bands, numerous buttons, and/or a codpiece.

Biography: Lester was born in New England to an engineer and a music teacher. From his parents he inherited both a love of machines and music.

When he was 12-years-old, his father’s research in using acoustics as a nonlethal deterrent won him the attention of Noah Meinstein and the Gibson family relocated from Massachusetts to New York.

In the epicenter of culture, Lester spent his teen years nurturing his musical abilities. He began to write his own songs (they stank) and sing them (his voice stank worse). The only redemptive quality was his ability on the guitar—but even that talent was drowned out by his horribly crooning some of the worst lyrics ever put to paper.

Frustrated, Lester settled for joining a band and letting someone else be the front man. His band, Lightsaber Lobotomy, toured several clubs and developed a small following… but they were never going to be anything big. Worse than that, Lester realized he was nothing more than just a backup singer. His only comfort came from alcohol and prescription drugs.

When his method of slaying his pain began to affect his ability to perform, Lightsaber Lobotomy cut Lester loose. Feeling underappreciated and untalented, Lester delved into the other talent he possessed and cobbled together a guitar unlike any other: a guitar that employed his father’s acoustic armaments…

NEW VINDICATORS: absit omen—After the New Vindicators brought the Wisent to justice, they inadvertently created a power vacuum that threatened to swallow New York City. While some—such as Bogart, Thuggy Thuggerton and Trigger Happy—had loftier ambitions, some criminals preferred to keep things low-key: Stratocaster used his amped up guitar to attack a retirement home, figuring that the lack of security and pools of medications would make it the ultimate score.

He was stopped by the latest incarnation of Frostbite’s cell: Bulwark, Oscillator, Blur, Gabriel and Gabrielle Farouk. Though he believed himself to have the upper hand early on in the fight, his hopes of defeating the teenage heroes came crashing down when Bulwark simply took away the human’s guitar and smashed it to smithereens.

NEW VINDICATORS: contraria contrariis curantur—At some point, Stratocaster not only created a new guitar but found himself pitted against the alumni of the New Vindicators Academy of America. The rogue Vindicators were able to put him down and he was soon reprimanded to the custody of the Aurelius and Bulwark—the two entrusted with running Blitzkrieg’s extra-dimensional prison. When the White Witch and the Sixth Reich arrived though, Stratocaster found himself a free man…

Along with several other rogues, Stratocaster was equipped with an item from the Aurelius’ vault: Ruyi Jingo Bang—a staff capable of altering its size to whatever length the wielder can imagine. This power did not save him though as Lodestone easily took the metal weapon away and used it to bring the man to his knees.

NEW VINDICATORS: igne ferroque—Needing hosts for the remaining Areopagus, Libra dispatched Deimos to liberate the villains incarcerated in Tartarus. Though Stratocaster was not amongst those chosen to join the Basileus’ army, he did take advantage of the prison break out and fled from the city.

NEW VINDICATORS: condemnant quod non intellegunt—While his teammates hunted for Justice and Absolom, the Cold Detective took it upon himself to conduct his own investigation. His search led him to Hell in a Handbasket, where Stratocaster was moving to take the stage. When his attack on the night club began, the Cold Detective engaged him in combat and—against all odds—lost.

Michuru81 wrote:Every GM needs a pool of villains who don't have it to really... threaten the PCs. They're annoying little gnats who the heroes beat on their way to a romantic dinner with their girlfriends (inevitably making them late) or who attack a jewelry store the hero happens to pass on his way to his day job (inevitably making him late). These villains are not the Magneto's or the Doctor Doom's of your campaign: they are the Trapster's, the Wingless Wizard's, the--dark I say it?--Hammerhead's.

Stratocaster is one of these villains--a guy who doesn't actually stand a chance against the PCs but he still keeps showing up. In fact, his one and only talent seems to be that no prison can hold him--ensuring that whatever serious problem the PCs are presently dealing with will be on hiatus for just a few seconds...

Startocaster is awesome. And further proof that you can build a decently effective character on a really low budget.

Well...not horribly ineffective. Area attacks are nothing to sneeze at. Like those comics characters you'd mentioned, yeah, he'd be mush in a straight fight, but that's why those guys form crappy revenge-based teams.

#232: Siegfried

Post by Michuru81 »

SIEGFRIED (Power Level 12)

Real Name: Sigurd
Aliases: Sivard Snarensven, Siegfried Völsunga
Height / Weight: 6’6” / 210 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Blonde / Blue
Place of Birth: Iceland (973)
First Appearance: Illuminati #6

Physical Appearance: As Siegfried Völsunga, President of Völsunga Enterprises, Siegfried is a statuesque man who most presume to be in his early thirties. He is seldom seen outside of an expensive suit accessorized by only the most attractive women he can find on each arm. His hair is almost always slicked back.

As Siegfried, the ageless knight is garbed in black and his hair is usually ruffled.

Biography: Not long after Sigmund fell in battle to a disguised Odin, his wife, Hiordis, gave birth to a son, Sigurd. In her grief, the widow took King Alf as a husband and the man opted to send Sigurd away to be trained by Regin, the one-eyed dwarf.

The guise of tutelage, Regin seemingly equipped the youth with all the tools of a hero: a steed (Grani) and a sword (Gram) and most importantly a quest… Regin filled the boy’s head with tales of the dragon Fafnir…

Regin educated Sigurd on how to kill the dragon: he told him dig a pit and lie in it in wait. Further, the dwarf convinced the youth to strip down—as the dragon would likely smell the skins and furs he clothed himself with. Sigurd did as the dwarf dictated and sure enough, when the dragon walked over the pit, Sigurd found himself staring up at the beast’s unprotected belly and drove his sword home. The dragon’s blood poured over the youth, covering his body save where a single leaf had fallen on his left shoulder.

Regin returned when the beast was slain and advised Sigurd to nourish himself on the dragon. He convinced the youth to not only drink the beast’s blood but to also roast and eat its heart.

Bathing in the blood granted Sigurd immeasurable invulnerability while drinking the blood allowed him to understand the language of the birds. Eating the heart conferred on Sigurd the gift of wisdom and allowed him to see through Regin’s machinations: his teacher was none other than Odin—the man who had killed Sigurd’s father.

Odin tried to calm the boy by telling him more of the history he shared with their family. It began with his ensuring the birth of Völsung—Sigurd’s paternal grandfather—and bequeathing an arcana-imbued sword upon him at his wedding. When the sword passed to Sigmund, Sigurd’s father, Odin arrived on the field of battle to shatter it and slay the king, all to help create the knight before him.

Odin confessed to be steering prophesy: he had sacrificed his eye for the gift of foresight and had seen the strings he would need to pull in order to save the world. Sigurd didn’t care what the man’s intentions were—he only saw Odin manipulating his family for three generations and had had enough.

Severing ties with Odin, Sigurd began traveling, seeking out a way to bring about the end of the immortals. Much to his own chargin, Völsung was the great-grandson of Odin, which conferred some measure of immortality upon the would-be god slayer. Though hardly immortal, Sigurd failed to age, giving him plenty of time to seek about the downfall of the gods.

In the centuries since his journey began, Sigurd has developed a name for himself in Iceland. Using the gold he inherited from his father (and the horde Fafnir kept), Sigurd established Völsunga Enterprises, a company devoted to “creating a better tomorrow” through engineering feats. Through this company he is able to finance his private ventures: traversing the planet in search of the remaining Æsir and acquiring the items produced by their own kingdom—items such as Longinus, the Spear of Destiny: the only item able to successfully end the lives of those who have devoured a golden apple…

ILLUMINATI: Circle Chase—When Ahasuerus began to gather the fragments, the originally Illuminati met to decide how to counteract their rogue member. It was the Astronomer—Isaac Newton—who declared that he had contacted Siegfried, believing no one else capable of stopping the Wandering Jew.

ILLUMINATI: Philanthropic Vengeance—When Siegfried caught the trail of Odin, Odin assimilated himself into the Illuminati and joined them on a quest for Tyrfing. When the group’s path crossed the god slayer, Siegfried displayed the power of the Spear of Destiny by ending the life of one of their own: Siefried killed the regenerating Doctor John O’Reilly.

ILLUMINATI: Wild Hunt—While searching for the Aurelius, the Illuminati found themselves in Shambalah, the city of the Æsir. However, they were not the first to arrive… They discovered that Abaddon had guided Siegfried to the city and the man used Longinus to massacre hordes of the gods.

ILLUMINATI: Once and Future King—While investigating the disappearance of several children in Watertown, South Dakota, Joseph Anvil discovered the intervention of Völsunga Enterprises and soon encountered Siegfried. The knight informed the magus that they shared an enemy: Merlin. The two formed an alliance, agreeing to work together to stop Merlin’s scheme to create a disaster so nightmarish that King Arthur would awaken and seize his destiny once again.

Michuru81 wrote:My hobby: taking history and classical literature (yes, I consider the Völsunga saga classical literature) and then fabricating a few facts. In the case of the Völsunga saga, that means presuming Odin is Regin. There you go.

In any case, Siegfried here is pretty much the big bad over in the Illuminati's side of the OUBLIETTE campaign world. He's not maniacal to the point that he's going to hunt down the PCs. He just tends to cross paths with them while he's out hunting down anyone blessed with immortality. If one of the PCs happens to come back from the dead? Well, then he might attack the party but otherwise? So long as they keep themselves out of his business, he doesn't really care what they're up to.

Plot-wise, Siegfried is an equalizer. He allows for my campaign world to accommodate immortals without having them overrunning the place. Now, whenever the PCs come up with some random deity from Egyptian, Norse, Greek, Canaanite mythology... I can just brush it off as "Siegfried killed him." He's my own personal version of "a wizard did it."

Stratocaster reminds me of the Shocker in a way.

Smart enough to make a device he could sell to the military for millions, dumb enough to use it to rob banks ;~)

Another situation of "being intelligent doesn't mean you're smart".

Jobber villians, what would the world be without them?

Well, look at the system itself: there's a difference between Intelligence and Wisdom--one is intellectual capacity while the other is... common sense.

Though I'd created the character long before I ever knew of the man, I have to say that I picture Dominic Monaghan when I imagine Stratocaster now. I blame his roles on Lost (which I loathe) and Chuck (which I love) for this...

#233: The Aurelia [PC]

Post by Michuru81 »

THE AURELIA (Adrianna Covington) (Power Level 10)

Real Name: Adrianna Covington
Aliases: Kitten
Height / Weight: 5’5” / 122 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Platinum blonde / Blue
Place of Birth: Scottsdale, Arizona (April 9, 1991)
First Appearance: New Vindicators #25

Physical Description: In her human form, Adrianna is an attractive young woman with long, platinum blonde hair and blue, tilted, almond-shaped eyes. Though she emits self-confidence, she is secretly self-conscious about her faint overbite and “man shoulders.” It is for this reason that she typically wears long-sleeved shirts, seeking to hide what she considers her most undesirable feature. Similarly, these shirts are tight, too emphasize her bust and waist—what she considers her best features.

When she assumes her feline form, Adrianna sprouts white fur over her body. Equally noticeable, her ears become tufted and stand up straight. Her mouth projects out further—like a muzzle—and her eyelids shut vertically. In this state, she gains a tail and her knees bend out.

Adrianna’s New Vindicators uniform does not have gloves or boots. It resembles a one-piece bathing suit, except that the arms extend down to the young woman’s wrists. Unlike Fathom’s uniform, Adrianna’s costume has a back.

Known Relatives: Simon Covington (step-father/paternal uncle), Marius Covington (father; deceased), Nina Field-Covington (mother), Clare Covington (elder half-sister/first cousin), Coup Field (elder half-brother; deceased), Doctor Stephen White (maternal second-cousin), Atlanta White (maternal second-cousin, once removed), Roland Birkmeyer (maternal second-cousin, once removed)

Biography: In 1987, Clare Covington manifested her Neo-Sapien ability to transform into a anthropomorphic feline. Her father, Simon Covington, had no idea that the woman he was married to was such a creature and left his family behind him.

For a time, Nina and her daughter moved in with a childhood friend, Charles Field. Vulnerable, Nina shared his bed and Coup was conceived… but Nina had no feelings for the man and soon left him just as Simon had left her. Needing a home, Simon’s brother, Marius, took the pregnant woman and her 7-year-old child in.

Eventually the two married and Nina conceived again: Adrianna was born around the time an 11-year-old Clare ran away from home—blaming herself for shattering her parents’ marriage. Soon too, Coup, sensing that his step-father loved Adrianna more for being his own flesh and blood, ran away from home.

Adrianna was too young to remember them or their departures and as such never truly developed a relationship with either sibling. What she did experience was a childhood as the only child of a wealthy man and a youth where she never found herself wanting. Ultimately, it produced a spoilt little girl who, as she entered her teen years, manifested the same powers that had sundered her mother’s first marriage. In order to give her a place where someone with abnormal gifts could be normal, her parents enrolled her in the New Vindicators Academy of America.

Adrianna found herself rooming with Gabrielle Farouk, Clarissa Townsend and Pastel Glock. The girl tied with Jessica Hague whenever the male students ranked their most attractive classmates. Jessica’s reputation for promiscuity sometimes put her behind Adrianna and at other times it had the exact opposite effect. Tired of having a reputation as a prude, Adrianna set out to lose her virginity and soon slept with Peter Errons—one of her roommates’ boyfriends.

The act created more than a rift between Adrianna and Clarissa—it transformed the two into bitter rivals. Adrianna and Peter began a relationship, with her completely oblivious to his inability to remain monogamous. Further, Peter convinced her that Clarissa was trying to break them up in an attempt to get him back—an act which only caused Adrianna to despise the girl even more…

NEW VINDICATORS: absit omen—After surviving Terahertz’s attack on the school, Adrianna was promoted to New Vindicator status and put on Fathom’s squadron, along with the Damned, Magnitude, Propel and Wilt. Following the defection of several students to Hikari’s camp (including Fathom and Wilt), Adrianna stayed on with the school.

During successive attacks from the Church of Genetic Purity and Black Box, Kitten was spirited away to safety. Along with the Damned and Breeze, Kitten learned that John Black was really a guise employed by the Aurelius…

NEW VINDICATORS: para bellum—The Aurelius told Adrianna that she was a descendant of the Aurelius and thus had unlimited potential in the arcane arts. Along with the Damned, Breeze, Fey and the Rhino, Kitten began to learn magic from Earth’s Master Mage.

When she was finally reunited with her classmates, she witnessed her boyfriend kissing another woman and realized he had been lying to her. She reconciled with Boson and dumped Savant before venturing off to go fight Apocatastasis…

NEW VINDICATORS: et spe—Though still a novice, her arcane abilities came in handy during the war with Apocatastasis. Adrianna found herself in the Bronx, along with several other heroes—amongst them, Breeze.

Breeze used his divination magic to learn how to cast healing magic. Unable to cast the spell himself, he quickly taught Adrianna and the young sorceress found herself an invaluable part of the group. Still, all her healing arts were unable to save Walkabout when Goetia appeared before them, redirecting Sclera’s killing blow to the veteran Vindicator.

In the moments before they faced Apocatastasis, Adrianna was reunited with her prodigal brother, Coup, and rechristened ‘the Aurelia’ by her former roommate, Boson. Together, they entered the battle… but the trio did not leave together: utilizing Quintessence’s abilities, Apocatastasis disintegrated Coup Field—an act that Adrianna has yet to shed a tear over.

NEW VINDICATORS: beatae memoriae—After the Neo-Sapien Diaspora began, the Aurelia teleported herself to Iowa, when Blitzkrieg and Bulwark found themselves in national news. With her help, Blitzkrieg was able to rescue some of their other scattered allies—Boson and Savant amongst them—and formed the rogue Vindicators.

Cloistered away in Hub Enterprises, Adrianna and Clarissa began to grow closer. Still, this newly revived friendship was threatened by personal tragedy: Boson reacted to the death of Blur by sleeping with Quint—an act she repeated after Deimos slew Savant in combat.

NEW VINDICATORS: dulcis amor—With her cousin Rumble now amongst their order, the Aurelia pleaded with the southern belle to teach her magic—which Rumble asserted she had no ability for. In order to save Margaret Altair, Rumble revealed her magical affinity and the Aurelia realized she had a new teacher…

At the wedding reception for Lodestone and Tierra, the Aurelia found herself intoxicated and in her inebriation kissed Boson.

NEW VINDICATORS: felo de se—After hounding her for weeks, the Aurelia finally secured private lessons with her cousin and added two new spells to her repetoir.

Frustrated with everyone around her pairing up, the Aurelia threw herself at Phobos, only to be rejected due to her age.

NEW VINDICATORS: contraria contrariis curantur—During the outbreak that swept the institute, the Aurelia was diagnosed with ocular toxoplasmosis.

Michuru81 wrote:I feel somewhat ashamed that someone who's a bit of a major character in the story didn't have a build up here prior to this...

Adrianna is a quasi-PC. During NEW VINDICATORS: absit omen I created a handful of NPCs and handed control over them to the players. Adrianna was drafted by Kelly, the same player behind Deimos and Gabriel Farouk. Most recently, the Aurelia is a member of the Vindicators, a player-controlled team of big-guns who I occasionally allowed the players to control. As Kelly doesn't roll with us anymore (pun intended), the Aurelia is in the hands of Rachel, who plays Phaeton who... hasn't been introduced yet. Them's the breaks.

For anyone who didn't know, magic in the OUBLIETTE campaign world operates as it does in Dungeons & Dragons 3.5: you need to be able to talk and gesture to cast (though there are some exceptions), and aside from those descended from the Aurelius, magi are limited to spells from a single domain.

The story pays some level of homage to this in the form of the incantations used. I'm a big fan of anagrams and all of the incantations are anagrams of the spell's name in the 3.5 Player's Handbook. For instance, "Cannoro Metri" is "Minor Creation" and "Mocriting Buss" is "Obscuring Mist".

Yep, I'm that lame.

For the sake of plugging people who are much better at builds than I am, prodigyduck has done a lot of D&D conversions that you should go check out. Seriously, a lot of this build probably wouldn't be possible without pd's hard work.

Biography: In 1966, James and Mary Loder welcomed their first-born into the world: Jacob Loder. Three years later their family expanded with the birth of Lorna.

At early ages, both children demonstrated their father’s Neo-Sapien ability to bend magnetic fields to their will. Despite both displaying aptitude with their abilities, James had always imagined his son following in the family footsteps: he encouraged Jacob to become the third Lodestone while discouraging his daughter from having any role in the life her father and grandfather had lived. Though James intended to discourage in an attempt to ensure her safety, it drove a wedge between them and Lorna simply assumed that her father was playing favorites.

By the time she graduated high school, Lorna had developed an ability none in her family could have expected: the young woman was capable of dividing her consciousness into two bodies—one with red hair and one with blue hair. Those closest to her realized from the manic shift in attitude both experienced that she was separating into a positive and negative mindset.

Only the winter before, the FDA had approved a new drug believed to help personality disorders—Fluoxetine. Before she left to attend classes at Kent State University, Lorna was put on the drug.

While at Kent, she began frequenting a nearby pharmacy to have her prescription filled. It was there that she met Alex—a young man who worked as a clerk there. What began as innocent flirtation turned into a serious relationship. As the two proceeded to grow closer, Lorna found herself exposing her secret to Alex: she was a Neo-Sapien. Alex responded by showing her his own abilities: he was able to fire white-hot blasts of solar energy.

When Alex learned that Lorna’s parents had put her on antidepressants as a means of controlling her secondary ability, he convinced her to go off the drugs. Doing so began to cause her animosity towards her father and her brother to boil over and Alex convinced her to use that. Her father and her brother had both retired from their careers as Vindicators—now was her chance to claim her blood rite and get back at them all at the same time.

The two robbed a bank, posing as “Solar” and “Lodestone.” For months, their crime spree generated a media frenzy that devoured the Lodestone reputation. It all ended though the day Lorna realized she was pregnant…

For months, Alex continued their spree alone while Lorna debated what to do. While shopping, Lorna went into early labor. The child was born without complications but Lorna, wanting a better life for their son, gave him up for adoption. After she was discharged, she returned to a distraught Alex and told him she had miscarried. In his grief, Alex confided in her that he was glad, on some level: he didn’t want their child to have to grow up in a world where he would be considered a monster.

It was with that thought that Alex and Lorna started their lives over—first with a common law marriage (legally recognized in Ohio at that time) and then as the Order of Chaos, a group of Neo-Sapien terrorists devoted to showing the world what real monsters looked like. They attracted three others to their cause: Meat, Blaze and Kitty—all eager Neo-Sapiens tired of being treated like abominations.

In their debut attack, the group found themselves facing off against Onyx and Godai. Though it seemed they were to be victorious over the veteran Vindicator and her rookie trainee, they were thwarted by Siphon. Eventually, the group was joined by Chimera, Xianbei and Bio and eventually evolved into the Vindicators VII—a perpetual thorn in the Order of Chaos’ side.

In 2001, after years of fighting each other, the Vindicators VII finally managed to defeat the Order of Chaos and saw them imprisoned in their own maximum security ward on Alcatraz Island.

NEW VINDICATORS: radix malorum est cupiditas—After spending years in Alcatraz, the Order of Chaos escaped on December 31, 2006—during Justice’s break-in…

NEW VINDICATORS: memento mori—Lorna was contacted by Bo Vidae following the deaths of her father and brother and arrived to collect her share of her father’s estate. In the attorney’s offices, she came face-to-face with her nephew, but the two avoided coming to blows.

NEW VINDICATORS: beatae memoriae—The Order of Chaos found where the Loder family was hiding during the Neo-Sapien Diaspora.

For anyone who hasn't picked up on it, the Order of Chaos are based slightly on the second X-Factor line up: Solar is Havok, Meat is Strong Guy, Blaze is Quicksilver, Kitty is Wolfsbane and Bipolar is Polaris and the Multiple Man amalgamated together. In keeping with the homage, Solar and Bipolar's real names are Alex and Lorna. So, there ya go...

The problem with posting such great builds is that people only want more. Higher PL versions of some of the Affiliation, maybe?
