-You know this era was terrifying to live in when this isn't even nearly the largest creature in the waters. Mosasaurs were another common oceanic predator, being big, tough, four-flippered reptiles with long tails. They look cool, and very much like the not-related-at-all Basilosaurus, but for some reason, they never show up as much as the other underwater reptiles of the time period. Perhaps they just don't look iconic and recognizable enough- they're rather featureless- just long-headed eating machines on flippers, whereas the Ichtyosaurs have those giant eyes, dorsal fins and long beaks, and Plesiosaurs have the long Nessie-necks.

-The Basilosaurus is the largest oceanic predator of it's era, and actually surpasses the size of the Mosasaurs such as Tylosaurus, and looks almost the same- which is bizarre when you consider that this "saurus" isn't a reptile at all- it's actually a primitive WHALE. It just looked so similar to sea monsters of the reptilian age that scientists named it "King Lizard" by virtue of it's sheer size. Some tried to change the name to the more-proper "Zeuglodon" ("whale-like yoke teeth"), but silly Paleontological name precedence means that it HAS to be called Basilosaurus. Not that it isn't a cooler name or anything. It's a PL 11 super-heavyweight monster, dishing out +15 damage, and being rather accurate, since it's hard to dodge something that's head is twice your size.

-Packing nearly the exact same statistics as ol' Basilosaurus is Liopleurodon, the largest of the pliosaurs- themselves oceanic super-predators. It's of similar size (though the Walking With Dinosaurs producers gave it an excessive length- 25 metres is a bit TOO big), but a reptile instead. Either way, these suckers are the kings of the seas, capable of killing absolutely ANYTHING else that has ever existed on this Earth. And seriously, imagine coming across this thing. Not only is it full of teeth, capable of fast acceleration (if not chasing speed), etc., but it's also so insanely large that it could actually HUNT AND EAT TYRANNOSAURS. If you're doing a sea-based campaign, you simply MUST have one of these. Very few things could possibly be as terrifying as a Growth 14 undersea reptilian hunter that can smash up dinosaurs in combat. Hell, having one of these at his beck and call would actually make AQUAMAN cool for once!

-Leedsichthys is simply a monstrous-ass fish, bigger than any we'll ever see. Simply put, it's the largest fish that has ever lived, at least according to modern science. It wasn't a big predator (it ate mostly like baleen whales, Paleontologists figure), but seriously- a 53-foot fish? It's sheer mass is enough to give even Liopleurodon pause, and in fact some of these have been found with tail scarring MATCHING a 60-foot super-predator's attack- and the wounds had HEALED, meaning Leedsichthys survived the assault! So despite not being a big hunter, it dish out insane punishment, and is nearly impossible to seriously injure. They're not that good in a campaign as they're unlikely to just attack the party, but they're still pretty cool.

-Dunkleosteus possesses a famous face, one of the most distinctive and horrific skulls of all time. I can't even imagine meeting up with this thing... giant dermal plates instead of regular face bones, and those plates are razor-sharp like the worst kind of teeth. Essentially it's a pair of scissors with fins. Like a lot of these giant marine predators, it's got a very high PL, and would be extremely dangerous to any party.

Diet: Herbivore
Tactics: Massive charge, smashing target with feet & skull, grinding them into the dirt

-Oh man was this thing ever big. By far the largest of the Mammoths (and all of Probosci... Proboscinidia.... the Elephant family), Mammuthus sungari was 30 feet long, 15 feet tall, and could probably handle just about any single animal on the planet in a fight. Most mammoths were much smaller (usually around standard Elephant size), but this is just too cool not to use. It very much fits the role of a standard Elephant, with much the same stats (ie. a super-huge herbivore that generally isn't to be trifled with), but is larger (Growth 10 to Growth 12), and much more resistant to the cold. Needless to say, if your heroes end up in the Ice Age, you'd be remiss in not showing a whole herd of these. 10-20 animals, all at PL 10? Yeah, that's pretty hardcore.

-There are actually a ridiculous number of Mammoths & Mastodons out there. The difference? Mastodons browse on high leaves, while Mammoths graze on grasses and bushes. Mastodons are generally stockier and more robust. The bizarre-looking Gomphotheres are known as "Shovel Tuskers", using extended lower jaws as big shovels, and were only Growth 8 or so. The Deinotheres were as large as Mammuthus sungari here, and had downward-pointing tusks on it's lower jaw.

-I loved these things as a kid, despite them being relatively unknown. Essentially, it's a distant ancestor of the Rhinoceros, but a bit larger. By "a bit", I mean it's 39 feet long, stands taller than a house, and outweighs a freaking Diplodocus. This is literally the largest land mammal ever discovered (only the whale family produces bigger specimens), and is so large that scientists believe it's as big as a warm-blooded animal could possibly get without overheating and dying. There is no predator in creation large enough to handle one of these, so they were likely untouched on the plains they inhabited. Physically, it is probably the most impressive specimen of any land mammal ever. Some name-changing has occured on this (some call it "Paraceratherium"), but this name is coolest, so it's what I'm sticking with.

-Megatherium is the super-awesome Giant Ground Sloth, known for being one of those examples that most animals just got lamer and lamer as time went on. Seriously, it went from being the size of a freaking ELEPHANT, with gigantic foot-long claws on all four of it's limbs, to nature's slowest-moving mammal that couldn't fight it's way out of a wet paper bag. Not to mention that there's some evidence that this thing could've used it's claws as major weapons- implying that it could have taken over kills from predators and ATE FLESH. Ideally, for a campaign, it's a classic case of fooling the party into thinking something's an easy fight. Sloths are known for being slow, so surely this guy would suck, right? Well BOOM, here go you- PL 10 super-awesome claw-wielding scrapper/powerhouse build! Eat it!

Don't mock sloths. They're weak, slow, inept, and yet they're still alive.

Though, granted, evolution hasn't done them too many favors.
I've forgotten more than some people will ever know... Of course, there's my problem...

What is it about the oceans that makes its' creatures look so damn terrifying?

Very nice builds Jab, it'd be cool to see Namor riding one of these sea monsters into battle! 8)

-Plateosaurus is a REALLY old dinosaur find, both in terms of age of the animal (Triassic period, before most of the REALLY cool dinos showed up), and the time of fossil discovery (it's #5 overall). An early Sauropod, it's been all over the place as far as common knowledge about it's eating habits, stance, etc. Simply put, nobody can agree on exactly what it looked like, how it stood, or any of that. It's two-legged most of the time, and has yet to develop many of the standard Sauropod schticks, but it's got the long neck and tail. It's 'only' Growth 8, and quite skinny, so it's an ideal prey species. The only problem is it's nowhere near as famous or as notable-looking as the duckbills, so it'll probably always be a fifth-stringer animal- no Dino-related shows ever care about it, despite the number of fossils remaining (hundreds of well-preserved skeletons) making it one of the most important dinosaurs for study purposes of all time.

It's funny, because Sauropods are always about SIZE SIZE SIZE, but I can't help but think about playing the greatest Paladin ever in D&D: the guy riding a Europasaurus into battle, with armour on it and everything. At PL 6, they're the babies of what is normally the biggest of the biggest dinosaurs, but they're still no push-over, able to beat the snot out of your average horse or wolf or something. In a campaign, you may as well use these stats for baby Sauropods, but you could also use my Dino-Paladin idea. Because that would be awesome.

-Mamenchisaurus is a little-known dinosaur that kinda stuck with me as a kid, since I had this bad-ass purple toy of one way back when. One time, I forgot to take it out of the sandbox, and it got all kinds of ice frozen over it (it's Canada, you can go from "sandbox weather" to "ice over every freaking thing" in about a week), so I had to wait a whole 'nother year to play with it again. Oddly, I don't recall being that upset about it, since I could just wait for it. In any case, it's a great example of a 'medium' Sauropod, having only Growth 10 (about the size of an African Elephant), but with a super-elongated neck. It's PL 8.5, which means it's no pushover, and it's feats mean it could take on anything short of the larger Sauropods or super-theropods.

-With the nomenclature of "Brontosaurus" being up in airs, Diplodocus kind of snuck is as being THE iconic Sauropod dinosaur (being the owner of the famous dinosaur skeleton at the Carnegie Museum- and re-casted all over the world, it's no surprise that this one became famous). It's one of the smaller ones of the "big names", being only about as big as Indricotherium or other super-mammals, but it makes up for it with tremendous length. Going upwards of 92 feet long, scientists have measured it's EXTREMELY long tail and have potentially guessed that it could create miniature sonic booms, the same way a bullwhip does. Yes, that means nature essentially broke the sound barrier before humankind ever did. Also, they have cool little spikey things going up their backs. It's also possible that Seismosaurus, a similarly-built animal, is the exact same thing, and these just grew far bigger in certain areas, but Paleontology is funny that way. I mean, if you saw Arnold Schwarzenegger & Danny DeVito buried a few miles apart, would you think they were the same species?

-Diplodocus is a super-heavyweight, but lacks the accuracy of Indricotherium, as well as having a notch less Impervious Toughness, since it's a bit skinnier overall. It's Extended Reach on the Strike gives it a FAR greater range of damage, though. Note that the "sonic boom" wouldn't express itself as much of a dazzle any more than a bullwhip's sonic boom does- it's uncomfortable, but would be unlikely to deafen anybody. At PL 9.5, these things also tended to fight in entire HERDS, so unless the Allosaurs chasing it fought in packs (which they usually did), these things could send off just about ANY predator walking. Being "only" Growth 12 for a 92-foot long animal seems odd, but it's mainly in the tail & neck, which I've accounted for separately with reached damage. The thing's body is 'only' about three men tall.

-Saltasaurus is a pretty cool Growth 8 version of a Sauropod, and being one of the very few known with actual ARMOUR on it's back. So nature, for some reason, decided to mix an Ankylosaurus with an Apatosaurus, to get some kind of weird hybrid creature. What is this, The Wuzzles? He's only PL 7.5, but he's quite tough, as strong as an Elephant, and is usually confronted in large herds.

-Ah, the Brontosaurus. An initial, awesome name was given to this creature because of some complicated politics involving paleontologists, and it was given an incorrect head, the robust skull of a Camarasaurus was assumed to be the proper one. Science quickly discovered the real, elongated skull, and an old taxon for such a creature was used instead- the much lamer Apatosaurus. Seriously, what would you rather have? Deceptive Lizard? Or THUNDER LIZARD? So thanks to some paleontological ass-hattery, we have a much-lamer-named creature, but I say thee NAY! Every time I will ever refer to such a creature, it will always be a Brontosaurus. Screw scientific naming rules. Screw "Apatosaurus". Such a beast deserves the name "Brontosaurus".

-Brontosaurus is a PL 10 super-monster, far stronger than other heavyweight creatures like the Elephant, Megatherium, Indricotherium, or even Diplodocus. It's of similar size to the long Sauropod who's become one of the most famous ones over the years, but Brontosaurus is WAY beefier. His body is longer, taller, wider, he weighs almost twice was a Diplodocus does despite being far shorter in length. Very few animals could have ever hoped to bring one down solo, so it would've had to have been a group effort amongst hyper-bad-ass theropods to do it, or a really sick animal. Note that despite being the same PL as an Indricotherium, it's a full PL 10, whereas that one was PL 9.5, and not remotely as tough.

-If you're not using Diplodocus, Brontosaurus is an ideal choice in a campaign for a "generic" Sauropod in the background- it's recognizable, famous, a known super-heavyweight, and will be immediately respected. If you're feeling like proving you're smart, use the lesser-known Camarasaurus or Supersaurus, both of whom likely have the same stats (Camarasaurus may be ST 36 and Supersaurus ST 40, if you want some specifics).

-Brachiosaurus rounds out the famous Sauropods (since I did an Amphicoelias/Generic Super-Sauropod a few months ago). One of the titans and most famous of the dinosaurs, these guys are famous for their distinct appearance: the long-armed (hence the name), short-legged look, combined with the tall crested head on top of a neck sticking mostly straight up (most Sauropods held them forward). So impressive are they that the ultimate introduction scene of "Jurassic Park" featured them- as a physical specimen, they're untouchable. A funny thing about these guys is that they're mostly identified with what we've discovered is actually a different genus, the Giraffatitan. It's this one that features in many museum skeletons, and it's a small bit longer and larger than it's cousin.

-Their stats are mostly identical to Brontosaurus, except they're a bit stronger, coming out to a full-on offensive PL 11, PL 9 on defense (like most animals, it's easier to hit). A bit more sluggish and easy to hit, but very few other things in the animal kingdom possess 8 ranks of Impervious Toughness. This is simply one of the hardest nuts to crack in the entire animal kingdom.

-So I decided to go and stat up the largest Dinosaurs of all time. Really, though, it's hard to determine what truly counts, since after a certain point, all these buggers are pretty much known only by a single piece of vertebra or something. Amphicoelias is BY FAR the largest one so far discovered, despite having the lamest name (I wish they'd just use the "Ultrasaurus" name here, since it turns out that discovery was a mish-mash of stuff found and doesn't count anymore)- but it's single fossil evidence disappeared a century ago, and thus it's really hard for scientists to justify it now. That said, all these guys are pretty much alike after a certain point. Amphicoelias is kind of a super-sized Diplodocus (more than even Seismosaurus was), being extremely long instead of tall, like the Brachiosaurids are (Brachiosaurus, Giraffatitan & Sauroposeidon). It's at least 20 feet longer in most estimates than the next biggest set of mystery-giant-dinos, and much heavier.

-But even so, I went with Argentinosaurus. With some estimates coming it at 72 TONS, it's easily the heaviest known dinosaur to come from solid, 100% true evidence, which gives it a legitimacy Amphicoelias and the others lack. Sauroposeidon (a really large Brachiosaurid) possibly has the coolest name of the lot save Ultrasaurus, and he's mostly the same.

-Such a thing would make a perfect EPIC encounter with large animals in a Dinosaur-World or something like that. Brontosaurus (change the damn name, already! It's WAY cooler than Apatosaurus! Screw the rules of Paleontology!) & Brachiosaurus are great for your "first look" at the dinosaur kingdom (just watch the scene in "Jurassic Park" when they first see the Brachiosaurs if you don't believe me), but if you absolutely, positively HAVE TO show the party a herd of truly impressive monsters, show them these. 112 feet & 72 tons of Sauropod super-heavyweight. Not to mention a PL 11.5 ANIMAL, which is certainly unusual. Not even a T-Rex could bring one of these things down.

-Other Dinosaurs: Most of the names I just mentioned are slightly smaller, lower in PL versions of this animal, in not in breed, then in statistics. Supersaurus, Argentinosaurus, Seismosaurus, Giraffatitan, Sauroposeidon, etc. Time will tell which ones will "stick" (Paleontology should be notorious for creating a new species name every time they find a bone- half this crap is probably just the same damn animal).

-Kentrosaurus is one of my favourite dinosaurs in terms of it's appearance, but it's a bit on the small side. All those spikes and plates and stuff... it just looks so COMIC-BOOKY, even moreso than Stegosaurus does. It produced one of my favourite-looking toys EVER, as well, the Kentrosaurus action figure for the "Dino Riders" line (which I've already statted). That toy made it seem equal to a Stegosaurus in size, when in reality it's basically a super-sized Horse with a long tail and spikes, but that's acceptable, since that toy was meant to oppose a Stegosaurus one. In reality, this is just a pretty small, PL 7 dinosaur with a bad-ass weapon and a Shield set-up for it's plates.

-Stegosaurus is the most well-known and largest member of it's type, the Stegosaurids. Thirty feet long, carrying four massive spikes on the end of it's tail (so named for a Far Side comic strip where it's named for "it's discoverer, the late Thag Simmons"), huge dorsal plates along it's back (designed either for attracting mates, cooling down, or defense), and the wierdest variety of colours artists have given a dinosaur (it's tall, flat appearance apparently looks too much like a canvas to them, so they go NUTS with it's colouration), Stegosaurus is ultra-famous, and led to the stereotype that dinosaurs were dumb. It's brain (about the size of a dog's brain, not a walnut) is so small for it's body type that people assumed in MUST have been stupid, though in reality it was probably no dumber than any other kind of dinosaur.

-Stegosaurs are ideal dinosaurs for campaigns, as you don't need giant herds of them so small parties can deal with a few at a time, they're not overwhelmingly tough like the Sauropods or Ankylosaurs, they're faster than both of those as well, and yet they're still iconic enough that everyone goes "Oh balls, it's a Stegosaurus!" and tries to avoid the tail like nobody's business. At PL 9, Stegosaurus is a heavy-hitter, but not quite as elite as the monsters of the Dino-world. These Jurassic ass-kickers have some lethal weapons with a high Critical Threat range, and are quite big at Growth 8 (a notch under the heavy Duckbills), but not unstoppable.

-Protoceratops may be the cutest of all dinosaurs. It's a tiny, early form of Ceratopsian (hence it's name), lacking the horns, massive frill, or sheer size of it's compatriots. It's basically the size of a really fat pig, barely 400 lbs. (tiny for a four-legged dinosaur), and no longer than a man is tall. Despite this unimpressive stature, they're among the most important dinosaur discoveries of all time. They've produced countless magnificent fossils in Mongolia, resulting in information about herding behavior, egg-laying, baby-rearing, and even dinosaurs FIGHTING each other (a famous discovery of Protoceratops & Velociraptor engaged in mortal combat). All this for the progenitor of the Ceratopsian breed.

-For campaigns, Protoceratops doesn't have as much use as it's larger siblings, but they're a fun little background animal. At PL 4, they're about a match for a Velociraptor or a Wolf, but not much else in the Dinosaur or Animal worlds. A six-foot, 400 lb. chubby monster, it's still KIND OF scary in a fight (just imagine what a parrot-like beak the size of you head could do- it's believed fossil discoveries of these led to the starting of the GRIFFIN myths!). They share identical stats with Placerias, an unrelated, mammal-like reptile that also had a small neck frill, but also some tiny tusks at the sides of it's mouth.

It's notable for not only it's massive central nasal horn (itself roughly as long as a human being's ENTIRE TORSO), but a frill with three awesome spikes on each side of it. This distinctive appearance has left ol' Styraco as the second-most well-known Ceratopsian around, despite it's less-impressive stature compared to many other species in the family. The true purpose of the iconic frills has been anyone's guess- most are far too fragile and lightweight to be much good at defense (I ignore this and include it in their stats anyways because it's cooler that way), so they're possibly for heat regulation like a sail or giant ears are in other large animals in hot climates, or a sexual display technique.

-Very similar in size are Centrosaurus and Monoclonius, both of whom have simple, small frills with just the one nasal horn. They have the same stats (they're so similar that many believe Monoclonius is just a juvenile Centrosaurus) as Styracosaurus, but are generally less cool, unless you go for the "less is more" approach. Me, I'd use them just to throw players off who expect JUST the famous dinos. Chasmosaurus is actually my favourite out of this whole group when I think about it, because of the cool name and giant, super-impressive frill, and it actually has a full three horns on it's face, though it has the same stats as Styracosaurus as well.

-Styracosaurus is around so that your players won't get bored of seeing a generic Triceratops everywhere they go :). It's smaller, somewhat less-threatening, but still enough of a challenge that nobody's going to want to just ignore it. It's highly aggressive, capable of overrunning a great deal of targets, and it can Rage & Power Attack all day long. The Frill provides some protection, and the Horn a powerful +10 damage Strike. It's a full-on PL 8 offensively.

-Pachyrhinosaurus is a ridiculously-large mouthful to say, but it's a pretty cool and distinct Ceratopsian. 27 feet long, they're just a notch smaller than Triceratops, and have a very weird facial structure. Instead of a gigantic horn, they have a simple "boss" of flattened bone on their nasal area, which has shown distinct use as a butting weapon against other Pachies. Pentaceratops, another creature of similar size, has the longest skull of any terrestrial mammal in history, which contains a full FIVE horns. Sadly, rather than the 'built-by-children' monstrosity that comes to mind when you think of that, the extra two horns are just small little curved thingies at the top of the frill. So it's not QUITE as awesome as you'd think. Still kinda cool, though.

-Both Pentaceratops & Pachyrhinosaurus are neat, more obscure dinosaurs to toss out there just to prove that you are a nerd who buys lots of dinosaur books :). They're just a bit more impressive than Styracosaurus (1 point stronger & tougher, leading to 4 pp overall higher), making PL 8.5 offensively instead of 8.

-And here we come to the second most famous dinosaur of all time, the Triceratops. A huge, 30-foot herbivore, he's been depicted as fighting against T-Rex in nearly every piece of dino-fiction I saw as a kid. It's distinctive appearance and huge size make it the top Ceratopsian around (in fact, I think it's the final one evolved, so they really got no better than this- they died out during the K/T Extinction Event along with all the other dinosaurs as we knew them). Their gigantically heavy skulls were above and beyond the most impressive, as they were SOLID BONE, whereas most Ceratopsians had large gaps in their skulls. Thus, this is likely the only one that would've been a half-decent defense against predators (though it, too, would've broken comparatively easily).

-For a campaign, this is obviously your iconic dino, especially if the heroes need someone to protect them against T-Rex. They're huge, impressive, and can run down just about anything, and are PL 10 heavyweight creatures. Now, these are one of only a handful of dinosaurs actually statted up in official M&M terms, but I wasn't quite satisfied with theres. Toughness +17 for an Elephant-sized animal? That's four or five ranks better than elite Super-Bricks like The Thing & Colossus (or at least their M&M comparable characters)! It's also got +12 Attack Bonus, and while I'll give you that a large animal would have a better "hit chance" than a small one would alot of the time, that seems excessive, and solely there to make the animal hit PL 12, which I think is above and beyond powerful enough.

-Think about it: in comics, a standard PL 10 hero could probably take down a good-sized dinosaur by himself. Hell, stories inolving Stegron bringing together TONS of dinos, or the Savage Land itself, often have the dinos be mere obstacles or things relatively easy to fight off, where the super-villains are the key threat. I've seen Pyro nuke a T-Rex in ONE SHOT in the X-Books. So there's no need to have the dinosaurs hit excessive Power Levels.

Wow, I'm impressed with these dinosaur builds Jab. Not only do you stat them on reasonable levels, but you also give a good hearty amount of info as well (big into dinos as a kid). I was wondering though, even though they were millions of years ahead of the dinosaurs would it be possible to request a build of a decent Neanderthal? I'm never sure how good in stat and combat they should be.
There always seems to be a helpful classic caveman around in fantastical prehistory tales, dinosaurs or not.

I thought of that a while back, but then forgot about it. I'd be glad to hammer one out! I'll have to do a bit of research first. Thanks for the compliments, too- I decided when I started that I wanted to include all the dinosaurs I could think of, to avoid just re-doing what I did last time I did Dino-Builds.
