Okay, still doing T-Bolts, but I wanted to attempt a direct conversion of a self-made PL 11 super-villain character to a hero creation of mine. I wanted to see just what the game effects would be:

Complications:
Enemy (Stellar Star)- Dr. Death is one of the primary antagonists of Stellar Star, whom he blames for ruining his life and killing his original, human body. He will stop at nothing in his quest for revenge.
Motivation (Regaining Humanity)- Dr. Death is obsessed with regaining his humanity, and constantly strives to place his bionic brain into other forms. The fact that he cannot 'feel' anything drives him to madness.
Motivation (Sally Flloyd)- Death is dangerously obsessed with his ex-wife, and has sought to either kill, maim, or remarry her, at varying intervals.
Weakness (Electrical Attacks)- Dr. Death is highly effected by electrical attacks, which can short out his electonic brain, cause bizarre behavior, or otherwise malfunction his body and mind.
Weakness (Magnetic Attacks)- As a metal being, Death is highly-vulnerable to super-magnets and magnetic powers- attacks of this nature cause +2 more damage, and Move Object attempts are +5 difficulty to resist.

Wow, NINETEEN POINTS of difference (236-255). That is CRAZY. A combination of Drawbacks vanishing (6 pp), the Skills change (6 pp), Impervious (6 pp), and buying up Defenses to enhance Dodge fails to balance the dropping in cost of Super-Strength

Re: Jab's Builds: Thunderbolts (Zemo, Charcoal), 3e Poll

Postby Thorpacolypse » Thu Jul 15, 2010 8:24 pm

I generally agree with you that the characters are costing more points in 3E, however, I don't think it's impossible to capture X-Men type characters at close to, or at PL10/150. I thought Eld's 3E build of Cyclops at PL10/150 was pretty solid, and even Taliesin, who doesn't care to limit pp in favor of accuracy built him at under cost for PL11 and his Wolvie was only 177pp, if memory serves. A few tweaks here and there and he'd come in "playable" level, too.

And Berior's low level 2E builds show that you can at least REPRESENT the essence of a character at fewer pp than a total conversion. We've seen kick ass Batman, Superman, GL, Captain America, etc. builds in 2E at 150pp and I think we'll see the same with 3E once we get the hang of it. I think it comes down to, as it always has, your preference for your take on the characters. My moods on that float, hence my 5-6 different Batman builds at J-Mart, and my probably same thing at J-Mart 3E.

Now get back to work on those Thunderbolts! I wanna see your take on Joystick! She's going to be an early 3E conversion for me to throw at Nightwing since I think she would be a great foil for him in a combined setting.

-FINE, Thorp. There you go :).

-Joystick is an interesting 90s villain, created mainly to brawl with the Ben Reilly Spider-Man, having equivalent physical stats to Spidey in nearly every way, in addition to Energy Batons as a melee & blasting weapon. Once the Reilly experiment was dead and buried, she got shifted to Bagley's new book, Thunderbolts, and was there for a while before having a falling-out. She was in the updated T-Bolts series as well, and seemed to gain powers over time, but is still a pretty minor D-League villain.

-This is the basic Spidey-fighting Joystick, gaining most of his Strength, Speed & Agility, alongside her Batons (which are either a Thrown Strike or a Blast). She's a defense-oriented build, but only at PL 9, and she's quite well-balanced. Over the years, I believe she started to gain some Super-Speed or just regular ol' Speed.

Funny thing is, I never really read the Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider/ Peter's a wife-beating-evil-clone, Spidey stories, so my first exposure to Joystick was in T-bolts, and I loved her. Everything she did, was mostly on this bugnuts crazy, adrenaline junkie, whim...which I loved. She was one of the coolest characters represented in FN's run on the book. Her character and Speed Demon totally made that run work for me.

-Moonstone's an interesting one. Starting out as a manipulative bitch and moving on from there, it's eventually revealed that she's actually manipulated depressed psychiatric patients to KILL THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF HER, killed her own mother (who had 'wasted her life' caring for Moonstone as a child and thus earned her disgust), and she's moved on to basically trying to seduce every single man she's ever met who had any kind of power. She got down with Hawkeye when he led the Thunderbolts, manipulated Noh-Varr of Osborn's Avengers, slept with BULLSEYE of all people, and even flirted with Eddie Brock. She's like this incredible microcosm of everything men fear about women personified: It's like Archie Comics' Trula Twyst modified into a comic book character, and made a slut as well. Truly terrifying.

-On the Thunderbolts, Moonstone was sprung from prison unwillingly, but eventually went along with it. Manipulating (of course) the other team members, she built a power base around herself, and opposed Baron Zemo when he revealed their identities to the world. She turned young teen heroine Jolt into a 'daughter figure', but learned too late that she actually cared for her when the girl died. After the Thunderbolts era, she was reduced to more straight-up super-villainy, with full psychosis eventually being shown.

-Moonstone's a bit tough to place, but I think PL 10 does right by her. She can challenge PL 11s like Ms. Marvel, but isn't overwhelmingly powerful on her own (I read an issue of "Captain America" where PALADIN of all people shot her down with a head-shot while he could barely see)- she's just an extremely versatile (Blast & Dazzle are pretty common, but Insubstantial?) Flying Brick AND a Blaster, meaning she's well-balanced across the board. Where she REALLY shines, though, is her Skills, which showcase a manipulative psychopath of the highest order, able to seduce just about anybody, and look good doing it.

-Note: At one point, she had a second Stone, a Gravity Stone, which added some powers as APs- Teleport, Black-Hole Generation (Burst Blast?), Gravity Control and Force Fields, knocking her PL up a notch or two.

-Never heard of this guy before, but he was a little-known Roy Thomas creation for the X-Men, way back when they were the low-selling bastard child of the Marvel Comics line (hee, funny times those must have been). A mutant with "Genius" being his power (I guess), he did some stuff and then vanished, taking his goofy purple suit with him. He was brought back for The Thunderbolts as a reclusive genius weirdo, who was briefly taken over by Techno, but ultimately came free as the team's "Base guy", but eventually left after 20 issues for some weird thing in outer space because he 'owed' a guy who was also going. Or something.

-He had a TON of equipment that I was going to use with Equipment, but I ultimately realized that all his varied stuff over the years was better represented with Gadgets, like a true gadgeteer/inventive genius would use. He's physically unimpressive (his stats show that he's 5'1" and 151 lbs.- basically a super-short fat-ass. How this makes him an "Ogre" I have no idea- maybe it's like "Trolls" and there's a bajillion different ideas about them), but a genius hitting +14 on most of his good Skill checks. Not much good in a fight, but he's versatile and a Skillmonkey, which the team was then short on.

defiantely a PL 10 and quite possibly an 11 considering that when she made her debut she went toe to toe with the Hulk and knocked ole green jeans on his arse a couple times holding her own nicely.
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

Hulk and Thor villains are all strange that way. Constrictor made his debut against the Hulk also, and handled himself well, despite generally being used as a jobber for 20 years after that. In Hulk's first years, he nearly lost to Princess Python's PET PYTHON in a grappling contest! I think Blackwing (a girl with wings- that's it) fought The Hulk before, and Thor's been beaten down by the Wrecking Crew or the advanced Wrecker solo-style. Both guys are frequently challenged (and nearly beaten!) by guys who later go on to be known as scrubs and weaklings. It's part of why I prefer the "Logjam" approach to Power Levels- it easily allows guys to challenge the top tier characters, while still being beatable by the Spideys & Daredevils of the universe.

Of course, Power Creep seeped into the Marvel Universe in a BIG way later on (especially during the 90s & 2000s, when "who would beat whom?" seemingly became a HUGE portion of comic book storytelling- much moreso than it was in prior eras, though I don't doubt it still went on before this), meaning that those "Top Tier" guys were now in their own range, so who knows where they fit these days?

I don't think it is just Thor and Hulk villains that have this happen. When it comes to Spider-Man it seems like every guy to make their debut thrashes him during their first encounter, despite Spidey being considered a very experienced superhero. I mean I always felt that the Shocker should have a higher billing than other baddies (I mean he's pretty much immune to webbing) but still he gets jobbed.

-Man-Killer's another Straw Feminist comic book character, originally a champion skier who was brutally injured in a crash caused by an anti-woman skier. Debuting in those whacky "Team-Up/Two-In-One" era books to confound Spider-Man & The Cat (later Tigra), she was all "raaagh men must die!" like she was Thundra or a Grappler or something, and went on to be a recurring character in Thunderbolts years later. She most recently resurfaced in the Initiative program at Camp H.A.M.M.E.R. now that super-villains were all in charge, again being a backgrounder. Fundamentally, she takes the role of a Mini-Titania, or Delilah from the Spidey books- a big strong chick who can dish out a beating, and get punched by the hero without him seeming like a sexist goon.

-Man-Killer's a solid, but heavily under-pointed, PL 9 (104). She's strong (much stronger than Spidey- the Appendix to the Marvel Handbook states she's likely around Class 25), but lacks many side powers associated with such characters, so she's still kind of minor league. She's no pushover, but she's got nothing fancy to her, and nothing that dozens of other characters don't already do better.

-The Fixer was a pretty generic Iron Man villain turned into one of those "guys who fights everybody", jobbing frequently with Mentallo as his partner, rarely used until the Thunderbolts came about. With that series, he was turned into a Gadgeteer genius, wearing a unique-looking suit of bulging armour that he used for his "Tech-Pac", which let him whip out various powers as the story demanded (basically he had Magic, but with technology and generally less powerful and ass-pully). He was killed quickly by Iron of the Elements of Doom, but transferred his consciousness to a new form, a mechanical body. Desperate to convince everyone (and himself, as Moonstone noted) that this was a great switch, he ended up turning to villainy again with Zemo leading him, and he's currently still kicking around, doing stuff related to the T-Bolts and Zemo, as a good second-in-command. I actually like the fact that he's a "Battlesuit with a difference", not just being Iron Man with a crappier outfit (see Dynamo, Crimson or Man, Titanium... hell, just look at Iron Man's Rogue's Gallery to see what I mean).

-Wow, Gadgets and Shapeshift are expensive powers. He's got low levels of either, maxing out at 25-30 pp for his stuff (the Guided Missiles being the most epic)- it'd be cheaper to just use the baseline powers he's got listed in Wikipedia or the SAGA Marvel RPG, but this better reflects how he used it, I think- a Variable Array of stuff he had on his armour. Each form has slightly different powers, with the Robotic one being obviously vastly more expensive thanks to all the Immunities that form offers (don't think you can Mind-Wipe or Mind Control a Robot, for example). This means that Fixer is a VERY over-costly PL 9, as he's no major battlefield operative, but very, very versatile, able to help out his team with just about any power in a pinch, but at mostly lower levels.

-OH MY GOD I LOVE CYCLONE SO MUCH I WANT TO MARRY HERRRRRR.... oh wait, this is a Marvel character who is also a dude. My bad. And haha, wow, there's actually been THREE of these guys. What is it with all the super-villains with this power set? OK, so this guy's got a pretty cool costume (even though he suffers heavily from Mark Bagley's Goggles-Fetish. Thinking about his creations, I realize he's almost as bad as Liefeld with the pouches for that), and is a French organized crime member who fled his family and joined the Masters of Evil, then the Thunderbolts after fighting with them for a bunch, but ultimately surrendering to them. A hardcore background character and D-list guy, he's entirely un-noteable and has since vanished into Marvel Limbo.

-Generic "Wind Guy" build, except it's from a costume and not Mutant Powers this time. Everything else about him is "generic", from his Skills down to his Feats (which there aren't many of). Guys like this is why I was able to hit #1800 Builds so easily. The original Cyclone is a Gerry Conway forgettable Spider-Man foe, who was basically this build plus a bunch of Engineering skills. Like most Air Controllers, he's a higher PL with Air Control than he is with normal attacks- the standard format for these guys is to sweep people away with his power, but rarely can he finish them off.

-Speed Demon was originally The Whizzer of the Squadron Sinister, a *wink wink nudge nudge* parody of DC's Justice League, temporary villains of The Avengers. When the concept was fleshed out, the team was split up, bounced around, and Whizzer changed his name to the less-silly Speed Demon, becoming a recurring solo villain who mostly challenged Spider-Man. He briefly joined the Thunderbolts and did some stuff, but he's mostly a minor character.

-Not exactly the most efficient of PL 10 (150) builds, but Speed Demon does okay. He has +12 accuracy, +14 defense, but is only PL 8.5 on the latter due to lower toughness, so he's not entirely balanced. He's got most of the standard Super-Speed APs floating around, he's fast and relatively strong, and also quite smart, but not enough to confound Spider-Man on a permanent basis.

Complications:
Responsibility (Loves Songbird)
Responsibility (Attemping to Reform)

-I always thought The Beetle was cool as a kid. No idea why- he just looked neat in the one appearance I have of his- on that "Marvel Card Famous Battles- Armour Wars" thing), all green with purple bug eyes and stuff. So when he got upgraded to The Thunderbolts, I was pretty excited. As MACH-1, he was a standard Powersuit guy, but actually wanted to reform, and got to hook up with Team Cutie Songbird. He got turned black in the greatest prank ever (Techno gave him plastic surgery to change his appearance, but didn't tell him the EXTENT of them), upgraded his suit enough over the years to make him MACH-5. Of course, he & Songbird never really got it going again, thanks to the comic book rule I hate the most: Nobody will ever be happy in a relationship. EVER. If they are teased for years, the best they'll get is a brief hook-up before one dies or hooks up with another person. If they're married or in love, they'll break up because of something dumb and then never hook up again. See: Molecule Man/Volcana, Atom Smasher/Stargirl, Captain Marvel/Stargirl, Spider-Man/Any Girl Ever, Colossus/Kitty Pryde, Wolverine/Mariko, Wolverine/Silver Fox, etc.

-Ol' Abe is actually pretty good- an PL 10 (150) thanks to his Armour being really good, and his considerable genius and Skillmonkey capabilities. Being a Flying Brick-type Powersuit with a Blast helpt a lot, though he doesn't quite meet all his caps- PL 9.5 on offense, and only with his best Blast. I normally shun the Enhanced Strength/Blast AP set-up (some people put guys like Superman & Captain Marvel like that, which never sat well with me, both in 'real world' terms and in 'points cheat' terms), but it's officiall OK for "Battlesuits" judging by the Sample Characters, and fits them changing Powers around based off of their suit's power.
