Encounter Groups: Solitary
Diet: Seeds, fruit, leaves, Mother****ing Dinosaurs!!
Tactics: Attack all-out with powerful limbs and teeth, tear open jaws with arms.

-BUILD #2000!! WOOOOOOO!!!!

-C'mon, I gotta even give this guy an introduction? HE'S KING KONG, DAMMIT!! The epic movie monster from RKO pictures back in the 1930s, Kong was between 18 and 60 feet tall (the promotions insisted he was REALLY tall, but his functional size to scale was about 18-24 feet). And that movie's effects STILL look pretty cool to this day- their fingers messing around with the model armature's fur actually made it look like wind-rustled hair, and despite being jerky, you could see it was impressive. Compare it to Toho's Rubbersuit-stuff years later, and it's actually BETTER up until more recent stuff (and even then, Godzilla's mouth still clunkily jerks open straight down). And that movie is SHEER ACTION. Just watching it on TV a couple years ago, I was stunned at how they go blistering from one action scene to the next, with every creature on the island coming to kick Kong's ass and steal his woman. And the iconic plot and scenery, and that Empire State Building ending... there's a reason the 1970s and 2000s versions have utterly failed to hold up to the 1933 original.

-For stats, a Kong-type Gorilla is a PL 11 nightmare for a party to fight, but not so big as to be unstoppable- a fall from a large building will almost certainly kill it, and gunfire from biplanes would be a significant pain in the ass, as well as tranquilizers (though you'd need a lot to surprass Fortitude +14 checks). But this 30-foot monster can still stomp down a PC, and can Power or All-Out Attack to be even MORE dangerous! And screw with his woman, and he'll likely split your damn mouth open. So don't mess with Kong.

SUBORDER- STREPSIRHINI (Prosimians, Order- Primates):
-Prosimians is a fairly large group of the "lesser" primates, much more primitive creatures such as the Loris, Lemur, Galago, Potto and their respective subgroups. They have doglike snouts, with a better sense of smell than other Primates, but less manual dexterity. They're mostly arboreal, with their small size coming in handy. The Lemurs take the same stats as the Spider Monkeys, being of similar size and with climbing ability, but since it was requested, here's a tiny Tarsier.

WESTERN TARSIER
Role:
Tiny Cute Thing
PL 2 (39)- Minion Rank 2, Sidekick Rank 6
Normal Version:
PL 0
STRENGTH -5 STAMINA -4 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING -2 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE -4 AWARENESS 1 PRESENCE -3

Skills:
Acrobatics 6 (+4)
Athletics 12 (+7)
Close Combat (Unarmed) 2 (+5)
Expertise (Survival) 6 (+7)
Perception 6 (+7)

Advantages:
Close Attack 5, Defensive Attack, Improved Initiative 2

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 4 (Acute & Extended Scent, Extended Hearing, Low-Light Vision) [4]
"Natural Weapons- Teeth" Strength-Damage +2 [2]
"Simian Anatomy" Leaping 1 [1]
Speed 2 [2]

"Small Size" Shrinking 12 (Feats: Innate) (Extras: Permanent +0) [25]
(-3 Strength, -1 Speed, +6 Defenses, +12 Stealth, -6 Intimidation)

Offense:
Unarmed +5 (-5 Damage, DC 5)
Initiative +6

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness -4, Fortitude +0, Will +1

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Tarsiers cannot speak to humans, and their hands are less-dextrous than most other Primates.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Tarsiers are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Tarsier effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 5 (39)

Era: Modern Day
Range: Southeast Asia
Colouring: Grey/white
Size: Up to 6 inches long (less than a pound)
Encounter Groups: Hordes of 2-200
Diet: Insects.
Tactics: Flee at all costs into the trees, sneak-attacks on insects.

-Tarsiers look ludicrously cute, and are giant-eyed Primates who jump about and chase after insects, often using Stealthy tricks to do it. They're pretty much just the Monkey builds stuck onto a Rat build for the size, but at a higher PL, with their advanced Defense. They are NOT easy to hit. They can also turn their heads almost completely around to look in either direction, but that's not quite Radius Sight to me, since they still have to actually move to do it (it's just a mildly more efficient method than just turning one's body around).

FELIDAE FAMILY (Order- Carnivora):
-Ah, the Cats. Nothing else symbolizes grace, presence, arrogance or confidence like the form of the Feline. Their slender bodies, graceful movements, incredible balance and overall cleanliness make them legends among carnivores, hunting silently and with great care. And their COATS- these are truly the greatest amongst all animals, though lacking the sheer softness of the Mustelids- they have stripes, spots, rosettes, clouds, etc., and in the greatest colours of mammalia. The family is shockingly-similar in body and behavior considering the rest of the animal kingdom- look at the Mustelids and their varying forms, the Cetaceans and their huge variety, all the Primates (from Monkeys to Apes), all the various Hoofed Mammals (even from the same Families- a Moose and a Deer, or a Bison and a Dik-Dik), and then to the Cats, and you'll see the near exact same body in every single animal. A Housecat is clearly and obviously related to the mighty Tiger, regardless of a 600-pound difference in weight.

-The Cats are separated into 38 distinct species, and further classification is difficult, as many of the larger breeds can inter-breed (producing the famous Gigantism-inflicted Liger, as well as Tigons, Pumapards, Jaguleps, and more), and the "Big" and "Little" Cat classifications fail to produce much in the way of scientific reasoning- the Cougar of the Little Cats is often larger than some Big Cats. All Cats have incredible senses, high accuracy, dangerous claws, great stealth & agility, and high speed. They're among the priciest of all Carnivora.

Reputation (Jerk)- Cats can be very mean, and often take a while to warm up to an individual. Most strongly prefer the gender of their owner.
Reputation (Bird-Slayer)- While killing rats & mice is great, cats also destabilize songbird populations, as they are indiscriminate killers who simply enjoy murder.
Reputation (Pride)- Cats will not take orders, and cannot carry out commands. It is beneat them. As are you, filthy hyooman.

Total: Abilities: -2 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 5 (54)

Era: Modern
Range: Whole Inhabited World
[Colouring: Black, white, orange, brown, tan, grey with various patterns
Size: Up to 3 feet long (3-50 lbs., most are around 15-25 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary, pet, cat-lady bunch (5-100), feral gangs (4-200)
Diet: Cat food, rodents, birds
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by pounce. Often plays with food before lethal cord-severing neck bite.

-Cats are the most common pet animal in the world, and rival the Dog for popularity in the United States. They lend themselves well to modern-living, they can live just fine in apartments, and can be left to themselves without temper or play issues (the same cannot be said of most dog breeds- also, cats don't bark). Plus, they bury their own poop and pee. And dey're SHO KYUUUUUUUTTTE!! Sorry, couldn't resist. Seriously, I love cats (not a dog person at all), as even their bad traits (such as the evil) are rather cute and amusing. I mean, a violent, snapping kitty is kind of funny as long as it doesn't scratch you- an angry dog will get you booted from your apartment building. They're domesticated from the Wildcat, likely from a VERY small gene pool originally, and have quickly modified into different breeds, most of which are far more similar to each other compared to the wierdly-variable Dogs (most Cats generally just look like Cats).

-Cats are also much better hunters than domesticated dogs (they go completely feral within a few generations, and have always been excellent hunters of small animals), and can survive just fine in the wilderness, but are frequently victimized by Coyotes (think about THAT next time you abandon an unwanted pet to a random farm). So they're very, very skilled mini-hunters, resulting in a weak PL 3 build that goes NUTS on the cost, costing more than any Dog Breed, and nearly surpasses many Wild Canines. It doesn't do anything in the way of damage, but is very accurate, being PL 2 on offense, PL 2.5 on Dodging, and with lots of defensive Advantages (Uncanny Dodge based off of it's whiskers picking up vibrations & Evasion), natural Agility and more. Their senses are almost as good as most dogs' (their hearing is far superior), and they take only half-damage from falling.

-Many wild cats share these stats- the Sand Cat of the Middle East, the Wild Cat ancestor of the modern domestic breed, the Fishing Cat, the African Golden Cat, the Margay (looks like a tiny Ocelot and has 4-8 more ranks of Athletics- Limited to Climbing- they are INSANE climbers, and can hang from one foot or DESCEND trees as easily as they go up them), Marbled Cat and a few others.

Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Small deer, porcupines, rodents, rabbits & hares
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by pounce. Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Lynx are a good example of low-level Wild Cats that still have a bit of size to them- they share stats with most of the "mid-size" brethren at PL 5, making them the rough equal of the slightly-larger Wolves (who often break 100 pounds- these cats never do), leaning heavily towards accuracy rather than power. They strike like lightning, hitting from secret locations, and attack with extremely sharp claws before applying a final, lethal bite. The only thing keeping them from higher PLs and greater levels of power is their small size- 50 pounds is generally not enough to threaten a full-size human, though it's more than enough to cause a lot of damage. Despite their size, they can do +2 damage with their claws.

-Like I said, similar stats abound amongst the largest of the "Little Cat" family. There's a few other species of Lynx, and the Bobcat of North America is very similar, just a bit smaller. They're small, but BAD-ASS, Bobcats can hunt and kill DEER and Sheep up to four times their own body weight by themselves! Among others, the Caracal of Africa is very long-legged and slender, and can leap 10 full feet into the air to bat down flying birds. The Serval looks like a small Cheetah, and lives in the same areas as the Caracal. All of these creatures can see off a single Hyena or Wolf by themselves, but would run from more than one.

Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by pounce. Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Clouded Leopards are one of the least-understood and most hidden cats in existence. Relatively tiny compared to larger animals, they are nonetheless believed to be the last surviving descendent of the mighty Smilodons & Sabre-Toothed Cats of the Ice Age, their extra-large canines a giveaway to this ancient link. Believed to be vulnerable, population-wise, these are solitary, silent hunters that climb as well as tiny cats, and fight like big ones. Not many small cats would have the balls to take on a monkey or an ape, but these guys sure would. And that COAT- it's like the prettiest thing ever! Part of why cats rock is that even the 50-pound ones look totally awesome.

-The Clouded Leopard is very similar to the Ocelot of South America, possibly the most beautiful of all Cats, and is just as good a climber. It's not quite as Kill-y, so may be a PL or two lower.

Diet: Antelopes, rabbits
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by fast charge (given up if prey lasts more than 20 seconds). Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Cheetahs are famously the fastest animals on land, able to hit speeds of 62 mph from a starting position, accelerating faster than a race car in the process. Their slender, wide-chested bodies are idealized for huge speeds, but their stamina is crap- prey nearly always escapes if it can run for more than 10-20 seconds. It's record-breaking speed makes it famous the world over regardless of it's weaknesses (it can't effectively hunt anything larger than the small antelopes- a Wildebeest could cripple one), and they've been used by nobles for years to aid in hunts, similar to a Greyhound.

-Cheetahs lose the climbing ability and ferocity of many of their brethren, and focus entirely on bursts of speed (gaining Enhanced Athletics and a Fading Speed ability- taken from Prodigy Duck's build of the same animal, as well as the Stealth boost). They can make an Athletics check to hit 64 mph, but only for short periods, and they have crazy Initiative. Despite this, they're weaker than the other large Cats, being PL 4 all over except for their Dodge, which is enhanced thanks to their natural speed. It's claws aren't nearly as sharp as most large Cats (they're non-retractable so they can grip while running).

Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by pounce. Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Snow Leopards are one of my favourites- their coats are simply awesome to behold, very white and fuzzy like a cold-living creature's should be, and their leaping power is legendary. Despite it's name, it is not that closely related to the Leopard- the Tiger is it's closest relative. They're extremely endangered, living in remote areas, but are actively hunted for their coats (and probably wang medicine- it IS in Asia after all). They are among the cats least-likely to attack people, but livestock are prone. They can hunt large animals, but focus more on smaller ones like hares.

-Snow Leopards are PL 6, a bridge between the Lynx, Cheetah & Clouded Leopards, and the larger Cougars, Leopards and Jaguars. Not QUITE as dangerous, but still nothing you'd want to openly screw with. They're more than enough to bring down a Bighorn Sheep or a Deer. It's rather costly thanks to it's Movement powers and it's improved Stealth, and makes a great companion in Arctic-type campaigns.

as if my avatar and name didnt tip people off. Yes I am a cat lover too. I have 3 right now, and have had well voer twenty in my life as pets at various times.

I loved your comment on their bodies. Like the Shark before it, this is a near perfect animal. It has changed so little that you can to this day still see the great Smilodon ((thats Sabertooth tiger)) in its form and function.

And the really amazing part is that Nature did not change the cat. We did. Humanity is responsible for the domestic breeds. which means for the most part Nature basiclaly said yep this works perfect only minor adjustments needed.

one small note the Bobcat and Lynxes should have a far better leaping ability. Ive regularly seen those things clear leaps that would make a trampoline jealous. I lived in tucson for awhile and got to see them in the Sonoran desert. they liked to jump off Sahuaro cacti ((you know the ones, the two and three story ones)) and jump to the next one and would do so with no diffculty. Plus they were very comfortable in the mountains in the desert.

cant wait for the Tiger and Panther my personal favorites.

Re: Jab's Animals: Apes, Bigfoot, Build # 2000- KING KONG!!

Postby Jabroniville » Thu Oct 07, 2010 1:48 am

Can Bobcats & Lynx jump farther than 15 feet? That's what Leaping 1 is worth- Google checks say it's about 2.5 meters, so I'm not sure. Snow Leopards can leap over 40 or 50 feet, so they have Leaping 3- I know they're the record-holders, but about the others, I'm not sure.

Era: Modern
Range: North, Latin & South America
[Colouring: Tawny golden

-Gotta love the Cougar, the second-largest cat in the Americas. It's range is unbelievably huge, giving it the most names of any single animal (40 in English alone), as nearly every culture than encountered it gave it some sort of new name. The Puma, the Cougar, the Mountain Lion, it's all good. They're rarely larger than most average people, but are amazingly talented hunters regardless, taking down huge prey that no human would EVER dare tackle alone. I've seen clips of one of these buggers RAMMING a Moose at full-speed, taking it clean off it's feet, something I can't imagine a human being accomplishing. It's one of those little reminders that even the animals at our size level are much stronger and more athletic than we are. It's also one of the very few large cats (though it's not an official "Big Cat" since it cannot roar and is closely related to smaller cats) that is rated as "Least Concern" regarding most of it's populated range (some areas still have VERY rare sightings).

-I think Cougars are very under-represented in the media, though this is largely because it's both much smaller than the Big Cats, and it's coat is nowhere near as awesome. But for a D&D campaign or a super-hero sidekick, I think these would be awesome animal allies. Not so exotic as to be totally bizarre in North American cities, but dangerous enough that it can knock around a dozen thugs.

-I was gonna go with PL 6 for the Cougar, but then I realized it's kill-count includes Moose and other large animals, and that it's fended off Grizzly Bears and the like from their cubs, so it gets PL 7, equivalent to a couple other large cats. Plus, that's what me 2e version had, and I forgot. It's one of the more dangerous animals to people, as fatal attacks are on the rise, and most people can scarcely face off a cat as big as they are.

Size: Up to 6.5 feet long (80-200 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Antelopes, carrion, humans (in some places)
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by pounce. Chokes or severs the spinal cord.

-Leopards are the lethal African spotted animal, differentiated from Jaguars by their size (they're much less heavily-built) and their spots (Leopards have smaller spots, forming smaller rosette patterns of 2-3 spots touching, versus Jaguars' large empty circular rosettes of multiple splotches). They're amazing athletes, able to grab prey three times their size and then JUMP UP A TREE with it. Leopards have one terrifying trait, though- the often live inside city limits in places like India, where there are tons of poor people with homes that don't have any window-glass in them. I've seen more than one documentary detailing how some Leopards will just casually traipse about at night inside these towns/cities, pop in through the window (basically just an opening in the wall), grab a 13-year old kid, and pop back out. They are positively DANGEROUS to be around in some places.

-A Leopard is very similar to a Cougar in almost every respect (the template is virtually unchanged), but gains added Stealth in dense forests, and better Climbing ability. A PL 7 fighter, it can take out all but the most ELITE Minions easily, and is no small challenge for a PL 10 hero at times.

-Here's a Jaguar, the more squat, thick cat than the Leopard, with larger empty rosettes. Boosting strength damage and toughness, Jaguars are slightly less capable than Leopards at hitting, but harder overall, making it slightly better overall. Also, I stuck in the Black colour-variant. Melanism is relatively common amongst Jaguars & Leopards, giving them an added advantage in areas of darkness (like, say, forests & jungles, where they live). Most other Big Cats only have rumored instances of it, so these guys are stand-outs. Statistically, it just switches "forested areas" to "Darkness", which is a bit better.

This is a quite detailed outline for the cats Jab. I admited I never was too much of a cat person (that's my sisters' territory), but I have a doubt, isn't PL3 a little too much for a common house cat? I mean I knwo that cats are phenomenally agile - this summer I witnessed my sister cat dodging a snake by leaping past it while it was striking - but PL3 seem a little too generous.

PS: great Kong build.

It's all in the Dodge & Parry, really- they only make PL 2 offensively, and they're extremely weak and easy to injure. Since it's an elite animal- basically what a Familiar or Sidekick would be (most kitties are PL 0-1, as mentioned in the build), I felt it appropriate to be very defensive and skilled, but still weak. Being so keyed towards accuracy & defense makes them fundamentally useless compared to most PL 3s, so they're still not effective fighters. I felt it appropriate for such an elite hunter (cats hunt better than any other domesticated animal).

Fine, I'm sorry I completly missed the line about PL0-1 kitties (and I'm probably gonna revise a couple of my builds including cats).

Loved the King Kong build! He's my favorite non-Japanese movie monster! I would've liked to see a Mighty Joe Young thrown in there...just 'cause, but, he can be dialed down from Kong without too much effort.

The cat builds are equally awesome. If anyone has any questions about how awe inspiring some of thes critters are, they should find the clip of the Snow Leopard chasing the Mountain Goat down the cliff. It's wild! A high speed chase down a nearly vertical drop and neither animal seems particularly put off by the terrain.

I like how these builds bring out the faction loyalty. I guess since I'm both a cat and dog person... as well as horse (especially horse), alpaca and cow person, the declarations amuse me. Heh.

Im presuming your using the enhanced athletics for their balance ability right?

Cats are the tightrope walkers of the animal kingdom the combination their tails and the fact they have bscially zero sway in their stances gives them a balance ability that would make anything shy of a mountain goat dizzy.

And I think the cats pl is solid. when you consider that your basic no frills hosue cat can catch flies with their bare paws. thats an incredible reaction time and visual accuracy. I too have seen cats dodge snakes.

Yup. Basically, I would rule that either Athletics or Acrobatics can be used for "Balance", and since their Athletics is way higher, that's what they get for it.

Yea cats are definitely some of the coolest animals. I'd be hard pressed to say whether I'm a cat or dog person, I've always had atleast one of each lol. Can't wait to see the lion and tiger (my favorite cat and animal) build! Oh and I've always thought snow leopards were one of the most beautiful animals.
