Actually its a pretty common device for a teleporter/speed demon fighter.
Dr. Silverback has wryly observed that this is like trying to teach lolcats about Shakespeare

My faith protects me. My Kevlar helps.

Michael Carpenter
Michael Joseph Patrick Carpenter

Power Level: 9 (124pp)

Skills: Climb 3 (+7), Concentration 4 (+8), Craft (structural) 6 (+8), Diplomacy 4 (+8), Drive 3 (+5), Intimidate 3 (+7), Knowledge (arcane Lore) 3 (+5), Knowledge (history) 5 (+7), Knowledge (theology & philsophy) 5 (+7), Medicine 1 (+5), Notice 2 (+6), Profession (Carpenter) 4 (+8), Search 4 (+6), Sense Motive 5 (+9/+13 [Dedication]), Stealth 3 (+5), Survival 2 (+6), Swim 3 (+7)

Feats: Accurate Attack, Attack Focus 3 (melee), Connected, Dedication (protect the innocent), Diehard, Dodge Focus 1, Equipment 3, Favored Opponents 2 (Denarians), Improved Block 1, Improved Critical 1 (swords), Improved Disarm 1, Inspire 3, Leadership, Power Attack, Second Chance 1 (mind controls), Takedown Attack 1, Weapon Bind

Powers:

Amoracchius (Device 2 [easy to lose]; PF: Restricted 1 [to those of great Faith]; 7pp)

Bless this House (Feature 1 [reinforce existing thresholds]; 1pp)
Holy Fury (Ward 8 [supernatural Evil]; Drawbacks: Psyche Break [Faith DC20; -5pp]; 3pp)

Devices:

Amoracchius (10pp of effects)
- Strike 3 (PF: Adaptable, Mighty, Improved Critical 1)
- Blade of Faith (adds Affect Insubstantial 2 and Penetrating 6; Drawbacks: Psyche Break [Faith DC20; -5pp])

Equipment: Carpenter's Home (shared HQ; 1ep), Kevlar/Chainmail composite armor (Protection 4; 4ep)

Vehicle: Pickup Truck (Huge; STR: 35; TOU: +10; Speed 4 [100mph]; Feature: Off-Road Movement; 10ep)

Combat: Attack +5 (+8 melee); Damage +4 (unarmed), or by power/weapon of choice; Defense +8 (+4 Flat-footed); Initiative +2

Saves: Toughness +8/+4 without armor, Fortitude +7, Reflex +5, Will +8/+12 [Dedication]

Abilities 40 + Skills 15 (60 ranks) + Feats 24 + Powers 11 + Combat 24 + Saves 10 + Drawbacks 0 = 124

Complications:
  • Enemy (Denarians): the Knight of the Cross and the Order fo Blacked Denarius have been at war for centuries
  • Fame (dragonslayer): Michael the only mortal in last 8 centuries who was able to kill a dragon in one-on-one combat
  • Friendship (Harry Dresden): Michael seem to be one of the few people who truly understand Dresden and is willing to put up with his being a wise-ass
  • Honor (knight of the Old Code): Michael is a very honorable man, he still upholds a version of the Old Code
  • Love (Charity & the kids): Michael is a family man, he deeply loves his wife and his kids, which in turns love him and understand his mission as a knight
  • Responsibility (Knight of the Cross): Michael is one of three mortals chosen to wield the Swords of the Cross which gave him a lot of responsibilities

 Micheal Carpenter is more or less the bulldozer of Dresden Files, aside from some supernatural creatures (like trolls) nobody hit harder than him... ok, fine his wife hits harder than him when she's very pissed off

 Michael operates at PL8 against the majority of opponents, PL9 against the Denarians, making him a true terror on the battlefield, the Blade of Faith power makes his sword attacks even more powerful, practilly allowing him to find the weak spot in every defense by letting his faith guide his blows

 it has been hinted that Michael faith reinforce the natural thresholds, I gave him a feature to simulate this, leaving the actual level of this increment is up to the GM

 the Carpeter's home is shared HQ among all the member of the family - including Molly - each one provides 1ep. Thanks to the love and the unity of the family the threshold of this house is orribly powerful

HQ: Carpenter's House (Small; TOU: +10; Features: Arsenal, Garage, Living Space, Panic Room, Powerful Threshold, Security System 2 , Workshop; 9ep)

Charity Carpenter

Power Level: 7 (107pp)

Abilities: STR: 16 (+3), DEX: 14 (+2), CON: 18 (+4), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 20 (+5), CHA: 16 (+3)

Skills: Climb 2 (+5), Concentration 2 (+7), Craft (mechanical) 5 (+7), Craft (weapon & armorsmithing) 6 (+8), Diplomacy 2 (+5), Disable Device 4 (+6), Drive 3 (+5), Intimidate 5 (+8), Knowledge (arcane Lore) 2 (+4), Knowledge (current events) 3 (+5), Knowledge (theology & philsophy) 3 (+5), Language - (native: English), Medicine 3 (+8), Notice 1 (+6), Profession (homemaker) 3 (+8), Search 4 (+6), Sense Motive 3 (+8), Stealth 3 (+5), Swim 2 (+5)

Feats: All-Out Attack, Attack Specialization 1 (Blacksmith Hammer), Deep Ties 1 (the Kids), Defensive Attack, Diehard, Distract (Intimidate), Dodge Focus 1, Endurance 1, Equipment 4, Improved Block 1, Improved Critical 2 (Blacksmith Hammer), Improved Sunder, Lionheart 1, Luck 1, Power Attack, Rage 2 (10 rounds), Startle, Ultimate Will, Weapon Break

Powers:

Self-suppressed magic (Feature 1; 1pp)

Equipment: Carpenter's Home (shared HQ; 1ep), Kevlar/Chainmail composite armor (Protection 3; 3ep)

Blacksmith hammer (+3 blundgeon damage; crit 20; Mighty, Unbalancing Strike; 5ep)

Vehicle: The Sandcrawler (mini-van) (Huge; STR: 30; TOU: +9; Speed 4 [100mph]; Feature: Alarm 1, Hidden Compartment 1; 8ep)

3ep in mission specific equipment

Combat: Attack +5 (+7 hammer); Damage +3 (unarmed), or by power/weapon of choice; Defense +6 (+3 Flat-footed); Initiative +2

Saves: Toughness +8/+4 without armor, Fortitude +7, Reflex +5, Will +8/+12 [Lionheart]

Abilities 38 + Skills 14 (56 ranks) + Feats 25 + Powers 1 + Combat 20 + Saves 9 + Drawbacks 0 = 107

Complications:
  • Berserker Button (the kids): if you want know about this, just ask Queen Mab about her gates
  • Hatred (wizards): due to her teenager experiences Charity has some serious prejudices about wizards in general, not the easiest thing when her husband's best friend - not ot mention godfather to her youngest son and teacher to her eldest - is one of them
  • Love (Michael and the kids): Charity deeply love her husband and her kids, which in turns love her very much, to the point of supporting Michael mission above and beyond the call of duty
  • Responsibility (wife to a Knight): Charity made a point of sharing her husband responsibilities as a Knight of the Cross
  • Rivalry (Molly): Charity had some big issues with her eldest daughter Molly, seeing her as younger version of herself and apparently bound to make the same mistakes with magic and wizards. After Harry saved Molly from the Council's judgement the thing easied a bit, but still Charity has some big trouble handling her daughter (possibly because of how her parents handled her in the same situation...)

 well, here's Charity (a ATT primer I think) she's Michael's loving wife, devoted mother of seven, the most hard-working homemaker in the world, not to mention the primary user of the Mama Bear trope I can think of

 overall Charity is an impressive opponent, she has been her husband sparring partner for years, so I guess they are more or less on the same level (well Michael has a little boost from the Almighty). This version is meant to go one-on-one against Murphy, Charity extra PL came just from her heavier gear

 as far as I know in the books she never used any armor, but since she made Michael's I think it's safe to assume she had a spare for herself

 in theory Charity has (or had) some magical abilities, but she suppressed them after Michael save her from a dragon. I guess that she might still have some power in her, but not useful for anything but the meagest of tricks

 just for sake of maths, touching any of the kids will be a very bad move, when that happens she will get 4 HP just to kick your ass

Ah Michael Carpenter. The Man, the Myth, the Legend. The Fist of God. The guy who makes vampires spontaneously combust just by being int he same room as them. And whose best qualities have nothing to do with swords and the smiting of evil.

He was probably one of, if not my favorite character from the Dresden Files. I've always had a soft spot for boyscout paragon types, and Michael was basically as good and noble a hero as you're likely to find anywhere.

Personallly I like Michael very much, but because he's one of the few heroic characters with a well built and supportive family. In many works of fiction families seem to be more a problem than an asset, heroes crave for them, but are never able to reach them, or when they do problems start to grow at an alarming rate.

Oh, so those are fun-time handcuffs and not bad-time handcuffs.

Molly Carpenter
Margaret Katherine Amanda Carpenter

Power Level: 5 (84pp)

Abilities: STR: 12 (+1), DEX: 12 (+1), CON: 14 (+2), INT: 14 (+2), WIS: 14 (+2), CHA: 16 (+3)

Skills: Bluff 3 (+6/+10 [Attractive]), Concentration 4 (+6), Craft (alchemy) 3 (+5), Diplomacy 3 (+6/+10 [Attractive]), Disguise 1 (+4), Drive 3 (+4), Gather Information 1 (+4), Intimidate 2 (+5), Knowledge (arcane lore) 4 (+6/+8 [reference material]), Knowledge (popular culture) 5 (+7/+9 [reference material]), Knowledge (streetwise) 3 (+5), Notice 3 (+5), Search 3 (+5), Sense Motive 5 (+7), Stealth 5 (+6)

Feats: Attack Specialization 2 (Rote Spells), Attractive 1, Distract (Bluff), Equipment 1, Fascinate (Bluff), Luck 1, Ritualist, Set-Up, Sneak Attack 1, Teamwork 1

Powers:

Rote Spells (Array 4; PF: Alternate Power 2; Flaw: Check Required [Concentration]; Drawbacks: Power loss 2 [reduced effect if cross a threshold]; 4pp)
- Base Power: Quick Veil (Concealment 8 [all visual, auditory and olfactory senses]; Extra: Affect Others; Flaw: Duration 1 [concentration], Passive)
- AP: Area Veil (Concealment 8 [all visual, auditory and olfactory senses]; Extra: Area [burst, general]; Flaw: Duration 1 [concentration], Passive)
- AP: Misdirection Shield (Shield 4; Extra: Affect Others, Independent [Ablative])

Wizard's Constitution (Container 3 [passive]; PF: Innate; 16pp)
- Hexing (Nullify 4 [Technology]; PF: Alternate Power 1; Extra: Nullifying Field; Flaw: Uncontrolled [2 ranks])
-- AP: Focused Hexing (Nullify 6 [Technology]; Flaw: Distracting)
- Longevity (Features 1)
- Regeneration 0 (PF: Persistent)
- Wizard's Senses (Super-Senses 5 [Acute (all mental), Danger Sense (mystical), Detect Magic 1 (mental), Magical Awareness]; PF: Alternate Power 1)
-- AP: The Sight (Super-senses 10 [True Sight]; Flaw: Distracting)

Equipment: Carpenter's Home (shard HQ; 1ep), Handcuffs (fun-time & bad-time; 2ep), Reference Material (Arcane Lore & Popular Culture; 2ep)

Combat: Attack +3 (+7 magic); Damage +1 (Unarmed), or by power/weapon of choice; Defense +7/+3 without Shield (+2 Flat-footed); Initiative +1

Saves: Toughness +2, Fortitude +4, Reflex +3, Will +5

Abilities 22 + Skills 12 (48 ranks) + Feats 11 + Powers 20 + Combat 12 + Saves 7 + Drawbacks 0 = 84

Complications:
  • Accident (hexing): wizards and technology don't mix well
  • Doom of Damocles: after breaking the Fouth Law Molly was about to be executed by the White Council, until Harry Drsden decided to take her as his apprentice and put both under the Doom of Damocles
  • Reputation (Broke the Fourth Law/Dresden's apprentice): being a lawbreaker is usually bad enough for a wizard, but being Dresden's apprentice at the same time is really a challenge
  • Rivalry (Mom): Molly and Charity has some ongoing mother/daughter issues, currently these aren't as bad as before, but they're not compleltly solved

 last member of the Carpenter family worth of stating, Molly is a wizard in training, she has some good skills and some real potential, but she isn't the kind of highly destructive spellslinger Harry is

 Molly's biggest strength lies in the kind of subtle magic that her teacher has some trouble to understand, she is extremly good at veiling and - probably, by extension - at casting illusions

 to underline how her magic work I modified Molly's "force field" with a shield effect, rather than making herself harder to injure she makes herself harder to target

 none of Molly's Rote Spells is offensive in nature, the attack bonus is used only for power stunt

First of all, excellent builds for The Dresden Files. I particularly like the fact that he is such a (relatively) low level, which fits better with the style of the books. He might throw around a lot of fire, but he's not so good with the aiming and defensively his only choices seem to be either dodging a lot and letting the enchanted coat soak a little, or standing still and throwing up a strong magical shield. In particular, I am very grateful for you writing builds for his integral network of family and friends. He relies so much on them, despite his constant attempts to keep them out of his world for fear of losing his loved ones, that I would never use a build for Dresden without using builds for at least some of his friends.

As far as I know in the books she never used any armor, but since she made Michael's I think it's safe to assume she had a spare for herself.

And I believe Charity did indeed have a suit of chainmail to fit herself, which she wore during the events that you refer to when you mention Queen Mab's gates. She also has a few extras in a variety of sizes, along with additional medieval weaponry.

First fo all thanks for the compliments, at the moment I'm struggling with finishing Billy and Georgia, then I'll probably give a shot to Thomas and possibly Kincaid.

About Charity, I've not read Proven Guilty yet, so the only information are from wiki spoilers and the Dresden Files RPG, while she was listed using various implements the hammer remains the most iconicly associated with the character.
These builds are meant to be the baseline version of the various characters, so a GM might load them with extras as he/she see fit, but I wanted to avoid having them armed to teeth under normal circumstances (Kincaid excepted).

Loving the Dresden builds.

Charity looks pretty good to me. She's packing some serious muscle, some serious melee skill, and she's got the skills to make armour and weapons for her husband.

She did have a few sets of chainmail to go around at one point, but nothing quite as nice as the platemail/kevlar combo she made for her husband.

Honestly? Every time I read anything about Michael I can't help but feel a deep pang of jealousy. The guy is pure awesome knight in shining armour and he has a loving and devoted family.
And one of the revelations he makes in one of the later books to Harry ratchets him another level up.

All in all the Carpenters are epic level humans in a mundane world ;~)

Thanks, I admit I can understand your feelings, I feel a little jealous of Michael and Charity too, but in many ways they deserve happiness more than any other guy around. They've fought on the side of angels longer and harder than almost any other character I can think of and without neglecting their family in the process, that's what makes them pure awesome in my book.

#312 Dresden Files: Waldo Butters

Postby Woodclaw » Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:26 am

Sorry for the delay guys, but during the last weeks my RL has been a bit messy.

Image
Polka will never die!

Waldo Butters

Power Level: 3 (48pp)

Abilities: STR: 10 (+0), DEX: 10 (+0), CON: 12 (+1), INT: 16 (+3), WIS: 16 (+3), CHA: 10 (+0)

Skills: Computers 3 (+6), Concentration 2 (+5), Diplomacy 5 (+5), Drive 4 (+4), Gather Information 4 (+4), Investigate 2 (+5), Knowledge (arcane Lore) 2 (+5), Knowledge (life sciences) 5 (+8), Knowledge (popular culture) 4 (+7), Knowledge (technology) 3 (+6), Language 1 (Latin; Native: English), Medicine 4 (+7), Notice 2 (+5), Perform (Polka) 7 (+7), Profession (medical examiner) 3 (+6), Search 3 (+6), Sense Motive 2 (+5)

Feats: Attack Specialization 1 (improvised weapons), Benefit 1 (Forensic Training: when examining a corpse Butters can use Knowledge [life science] instead of Investigate to obtain clues), Benefit 1 (Polka will never die: while wearing the One Man Polka Band outfit, Butters can Feint using Perform [polka]), Dodge Focus 4, Equipment 4, Lionheart 1, Luck 1, Ritualist, Set-Up, Teamwork 1

Equipment: Cell phone (1ep), Laptop computer (1ep), Medikit (1ep), One man Polka band outfit (1ep), PDA (1ep), Prescription Glasses (removes the nearsighted drawback; 2ep), Light Body Armor (Protection1 [subtle 1]; 2ep)

Vehicle: Mini Pickup Truck (Large; STR: 25; TOU: +7; Speed 4 [100mph]; Feature: Alarm 1, Navigation System 1, Off-Road Movement; 10ep)

1ep in mission equipment

Combat: Attack +0 (+2 improvised weapons); Damage +0 (unarmed), or by weapon of choice; Defense +4 (+0 Flat-footed); Initiative +0

Saves: Toughness +2/+1 without armor, Fortitude +3, Reflex +3, Will +4/+8 [Lionheart]

Drawbacks: Disability (nearsighted [common, minor]; -2pp)

Abilities 14 + Skills 14 (56 ranks) + Feats 16 + Powers 0 + Combat 0 + Saves 6 + Drawbacks -2 = 48

Complications:
  • Polka will never die: Butters is literaly obsessed with Polka and is a regular at the Oktoberfest battle of the bands
  • Reputation (insane): Butters is smart enough not to let his prejudices blind him - especially regarding the supernatural - as a consequence he was sent a mental institution for 90 days and then his colleagues tried to get rid of him
  • Responsibility (to the CPD): Butters is a forensic technician to the Chicago PD
  • Responsibility (physician to wizards): not only he's a friend and personal physician to Harry Dresden, Butters is also the only scientist who had the chance of studing a wizard physiology up close
  • Shy and afraid of violence: Butters is unbelievably shy and tend to make squeaking noises when witnessing violence

 closing to the end of my Dresden Files builds I gave you Waldo Butters, likely one of the most popular character spawned by the books, possibly because he's so goddamned normal that any reader can identify with him

 Butters is a strange mix, on one hand he's -among Harry's friends - the less accustomed to violence, but on the other he had done some incredibly brave things (see the "Screw up my life" quote from Dead Beat)

 overall Butters isn't that good in combat, he can dodge a few blows and - as the laws of narrative causality clearly state - he's likely to draw attention away from the big guns giving them a much needed moment to catch their breath

 while he isn't a magician in the proper sense Butters is smart enough to figure out some rituals by his own

 ok these builds are really something I shouldn't have posted, essentially because they are still pretty unfinished and undefined (a consequence of having both Will and Georgia as secondary characters in the books) still I think the basics are all here and that is what counts

 not much to say about the rules, the power set is the same, and what differentiat them are the skills and the feat selection: Billy is more of a damage heavy fighter and inspiring leader, Georgia is more tactical and accuracy shifted

 the Wolves Central is their shared apartment near Chicago University, which was also the Alphas HQ and the theater of Will's Arcanos campaign for a long time

HQ: Wolves' Central (Tiny; TOU: +10; Features: Fire Prevention system, Library, Living Space [very cramped], Security System 1; 4ep)

The Alpha's Lair needs Feature 1 (Gaming Table). :D

Billy really gets a PL bump as a books go on, but this is pretty much dead on for their initial appearances.

Given that in my career I played more or less everywhere I consider that unnecessary.

Abou the PL my big problem is that I currently stuck with the books, both for lack of resources (I only have the first 6) and time (I'm reading the Gaunt's Ghosts novels at the moment), so many details of the builds are wiki based. Perhaps I will put together a refined version of the Alphas in the near future.
