Welcome !

The crew at writeups.org (a site with which you're hopefully familiar, if not you want to click on the link) has long had an interest in dual-statting parts of the site for Mutants & Masterminds players.

The main results so far have been two tools (OMACS for M&M 2nd edition and OMACS II for M&M 3rd/DCA) that ensure that we remain coherent in our work, and allow writeups.org readers who play M&M to derive ballpark values for non-dual-statted entries. There have also been threads here so I could train.

Now it's on again, including revised - possibly finalised - profiles for the people discussed in the previous threads. I'll see - very tentatively - if I can release about four entries a week. That'd be 200 entries a year, which is good since that way I can cover current writeups.org content in a mere 23 years ; assuming I'll then need 35 years to cover the content released during those 23, I should be fine unless a new edition of M&M is released within the next 50/60 years.

Please do not hesitate to comment and ask questions - I'd like to improve my M&M skills as quickly as possible, and that is way easier with feedback. Thank you.

Now that I have this stuff under my big nose again I'm making two corrections :

- the FAQ excerpt stated that the strict PL of a character could be derived from the highest PL trade-off. It's not true - some characters might have very high Skills, Powers, Luck Advantage Ranks or whatever. Fixing this.

- Starfire's laser shouldn't be equipment but a device since it's very rare and a gamechanger

This one saw some work since she can pick up ordinary equipement and have it perform exceptionally well. With this approach it's a property of the character and not the equipment (so random people who pick her guns can't shoot like she does), and there are no corner cases thanks to the Descriptor (it can't be affected by abilities that affect superhuman powers, it can be copied by abilities that effect skills, there's no need to slap on an Innate which would make it too costly, etc.)

Had Kate been a build rather than a writeup I'd have undoubtedly built her at PL10, but as it turns out her combat performance doesn't align that way. An offence Bonus at +14 backed with solid Strength and Power Attack (and she does use Power Attack an awful lot) makes for one dangerous high-end hand-to-hand fighter, but a PL10 martial artist is Shiva-level.

I like that, honestly. If PL10 is a level where you're going to find people strong enough to topple buildings, and people who can shoot the equivalent of a tank gun out of their eyes, people who can fight them on an even level with no more explanation than "really good at kung fu" should be extremely rare. Assuming it's not a genre where kung fu explicitly does let you topple buildings and shoot death rays, anyway.

The trick is to know that the martial artist archetype in the books is not an archetypal martial artist (especially in a DCU context - the stock M&M character would flatten Black Canary in a ring match with no super powers allowed).

Say I was wondering: Since Skill Bonus* also affects your character's PL perhaps that should also be taken into account for Average PL?

I think it ought to be because skills like Intimidation, Deception and Persuasion are like having limited versions of the Affliction Power. They can have a strong effect on the course of the game.

*Maximum skill bonus is equal to PL+10
