I'm going to semi go against the tide, and say I found it a flawed but acceptable movie; there were some pacing problems, and there's something to the suggestion you have some elements that didn't need to be in the movie, making it overstuffed (the scene with Hal's brother and nephew at the start was, if not pointless, at least more time consuming than any story justification would make it).

On the other hand, I thought most of the actors who got screen time did perfectly decent jobs, and that on the whole the thrust of the story, while it could have been tightened up, was pretty decent.
And we by this sole token;
Know we once were gods;
Take shame in being broken;
No matter how great the odds.

I liked it, and I enjoyed the fact that Hammond was there along with Parallax. Sometimes having more than one villain in a film just doesn't feel right, like an unnecessary comics team-up, but the connection between the yellow power was ok by me. I wish they hadn't made Hector so weird from the beginning though, it made it kind of hard to sympathize with him-douche father notwithstanding.

I think part of the reason I may have enjoyed the film as much as I did was that I had really low expectations going in. I had heard nothing but bad things, but the flaws that were there didn't seem worth complaining about to me. Blake Lively was pretty good (emphasis on pretty rather than good, but still) and I thought Reynolds worked as Hal reasonably well.

Could it have been better? Sure. But it was still a good flick.

The actress playing Carol was pretty lifeless in the role. But she had one stand out feature. The mole on her face. I couldn't take my eyes off it the whole movie.

Pretty funny.

Alright, so I am a lot more of a geek than I need to be. I saw Conan and took if for Howard's Barbarian. I was like "what does Ryan Reynolds have to say about Conan? Oh, that Conan.., right..."

However, that clip was far more amazing in 3D. Just saying...

I hold the exact same position on this film. Saw it last night at a drive-in (double feature with Cars 2), and enjoyed myself despite the flaws. I see why Hammond and Parallax were both in it, but it felt a bit bloated with that. It wasn't nearly as bad as many movies with two villains (the Batman movies come to mind), but it felt like the focus was too divergent in some cases.

The Oans were spot on, and Reynolds did a decent job. I think they could have found about 15 minutes of time to cut out to fix some pacing issues, but despite more than a few reviews that said the movie wasn't any good, I thought it was worth the money to see it on the big screen.

I haven't really kept up with comics for 20-30 years, but GL was one of my favorites in my youth and I really was looking forward to this movie. Frankly, it was just as cool as I had imagined. Maybe better. I thought that Ryan Reynolds nailed the role, thought the power ring CGI was pretty neat, loved the Lantern Corps dudes on Oa, and really had a great time. I'm going to see it again.

The movie inspired me to buy a copy of the "Secret Origins" graphic novel and GL t-shirt. It inspired me to hunt out my old M&M rulebooks and come back here to look around. I guess I'm not as much of an expert as many of you folks, but I thought it was a fun movie and has gotten me thinking about GL and comics again.

And that's a good thing. :-)

Sadly it looks like had a very poor showing its second week. Dropping 65% to only 18.4 million. Article is mostly about Cars but included for verification.

Actually, the best praise possible might be that when I told my family that I was going back to see the GL movie today, my 16-year-old daughter asked if she could go with me to see it again. And she doesn't read comic books!

Now she's asking me to run some sort of superhero adventure. I'm not sure she wants an all-out campaign, but at least something where she can battle bad guys. :D

And?

I'm not sure about you, but i personally don't judge a movie on how much it made at the box office. All that tells you is that a large quantity of the general public are sheep. Point in fact; Inception... Oh its brilliant, oh its fantastic, oh i was bored out of my mind the entire time by the really obvious, really poor story telling. But it made a whole heap at the box office, because everyone talked it up before hand. People really are sheep.

"And" if a movie under preforms what from what they expected the first week and then drops 65% the second it makes far less likely to get a sequel than a movie that was a hit. It hasn't done that well in Europe either.
Sure DVD could make a difference but it would really have to do very well there, and with Netflix and their ilk and the current world economy DVD sales have been soft. And yeah it hasn't opened in Australia and few South American countries but again it would have to do outstanding there to make a difference. So that is my point.
I already watched the movie and liked it well enough, despite its flaws, to want them to make more. Thus, my prefacing my comment with unfortunately.

Decided to give this movie a try (rental) this weekend and it just was not good. The first 10 minutes of the movie was the best. Well, that and the segment where Jordan and Ferris get to show their piloting chops. Save those bits, story was so rushed/forced, and the acting (exception being Mark Strong) made for some cringe-worthy moments. And I stand by my original opinion that Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan just doesn't work. He was better as Deadpool where he couldn't speak.

I had hopes, I really did.

And Kit, I hope you don't take my moment of ranting to be aimed at you. Not at all. It's just that your last post was the perfect set up for my remarks (read: 'venting). :)
