Determining Mass Rank

Postby terrestrialboy » Fri Oct 08, 2010 7:33 pm

Is there a quick and easy way to figure out the mass rank of an object? If it's in the book, I'm drawing a blank.

Say a strong character wants to lift up a motorcycle. What mass rank is that? Sure, I can look up the weight of a motorcycle on the interwebs, but that's kind of annoying in the middle of a game, and I can't take something arbitrary like the Toughness rank of the object, because that's way off.

So, is there a method to figuring out the mass rank of an object for the purposes of lifting the thing off the ground, and eventually chucking it at your enemy?

If you don't know the weight (and don't want to look it up) then there isn't anything like that that I am aware of. I would recommend just making it up to what you feel is "close enough" then or spending some time when you're not playing to look up a few things and write their weight down then guess an items weight based off similar object's weights.

Well, I got a bug up my butt and did some research. Using the table that was in M&M 2E, I made one for M&M 3E. I'd like people to check my math ...

A very nice chart, and you found some good examples for each category. Nice work. You might want to consider posting this in the Fan Resources forum.

My math was slightly wrong in a few places ... and I went all OCD on it and expanded it to a bunch of other examples as well. Man, distance is a bitch. I'll post it there.

Thanks, all!

some errors-

pretty sure even the heaviest Blue Whale isn't anywhere near 400k tons...
Weight of the Blast Impact of a small asteroid? ????
Saturn V Rocket = 3.5K tons

Lifting str for M&M3e is exactly the same as Str in the old DC/MEGS game and Champions str if you multiply by 5.

If you have either or both of those games you are all set.

Wow, you did a great job on this. Great, useful real world examples. I'm going to use this as a reference for my own game. Thanks for going "all OCD on it"! ;)

I've also been trying to figure out how conditions recover. There's no good spot in the book that really tells you how one condition recovers into another. So I spent some time, and came up with this chart:

Conditions Recovery Worksheet

I don't know if it's entirely correct, but it's the best I can do with the book. If I've missed something, or there's an error, please let me know.

Well, you're a busy beaver, aren't you? There's an old topic called "Disasters" that I recently resurrected. I'd love to see what you could do with that.

No guarantees, but when time allows, I will see what I can come up with.

In the meantime, I've got a convention to organize.
