Re: The Crinoverse 2 (Prometheans)

Post by Crinos »

Sorry I didn't post last night. Gonna make it up to you all right now.

Prometheans

Probably the rarest and most tragic of the super powered beings of the Crinoverse, the Prometheans are artificial beings created from the corpses of dead. They are unnatural beings whose presence causes people and nature itself to reject them, and their ultimate goal is to become human.

The creation of the Prometheans can be attributed to a mistake on the part of the Cosmic Eternals. The Eternals possess access to an element known as Pyros, which can be used to create human souls and bring the dead back to life. Some Eternals shared the secret with mankind, misjudging their ability to handle it properly. Human kind was unable to handle Pyros with the same finesse as the Gods, and so their creations came out... wrong. Unfortunately, the Prometheans learned to make more of their kind, and soon they were able to propagate themselves.

Feeling sorry for their creations, The Eternals created the Qashmallim, a race of bizarre angelic beings intended to help lead the Prometheans to their goal of achieving mortality.

Prometheans lack souls, instead possessing a wellspring of Pyros known as Azoth, which can be refined into a soul as the Promethean progresses through his great work. The path to humanity is different for each Promethean; Some try and study humanity, others focus on improving their minds and bodies, or studying supernatural and superhuman phenomenon, while others seek to destroy everyone who wrongs them. Almost all Prometheans need to create another of their kind in order to progress to the new dawn.

Physically, Prometheans are much stronger than mortals; They can withstand massive amounts of damage, regenerate incredibly fast, and can heal themselves with electricity. They also have diminished need for food and water, and they possess natural alchemic abilities. On the downside, they are unnatural abominations; People eventually hate and fear them (while this isn't as bad as in the WOD, its still bad, basically every time they interact with a person, they get a cumulative -1 to any bluff or diplomacy roll). Furthermore, their presence in an area warps and corrupts it, rendering it unfit for life in a matter of weeks. Finally, Prometheans have imabalanced humors, leading them to violent and often destructive mood swings if things don't quite go their way.

Naturally, the best known Promethean is The Frankenstein Monster and his ilk, but you'll note he lacks some of the abilities and weaknesses associated with Prometheans. This is because he does have a soul, the soul of his creator, who grafted his own soul onto his creation in the arctic. (It was actually a pretty dirty trick; Frankenstein lured his creation out by pretending to be dying and wanting to make closure with the creature. Ironically, making peace with his creator was the final thing The creature needed to do to become human, and now he never will.)

In any case, thanks to Frankenstein's soul, The Creature no longer inflicts disquiet or creates Wastelands, but it has serious drawbacks; Firstly, The creature is in permanent torment, he can no longer use his transmutations, and of course, he has to share his body with his evil creator. Needless to say, not many Prometheans consider the drawbacks worth the advantages (Not that its possible to create more; Only Frankenstein knows the ritual to create it, and he's not sharing.)

Promethean are fairly rare, so most super beings don't know they even exist; Horus, the Son of Ra and Athena know of them, as does Daedalus. AEGIS has destroy on sight order on Prometheans, if only cause of how dangerous they are, the Covenant tries to help Prometheans who want to become human and destroy dangerous ones, and the Pact mass produces Prometheans to be soldiers and slaves (and even keeps a large alchemy plant beneath Pittsburgh that makes Prometheans.)

There are numerous Lineages of Prometheans, the following are the most common;

Wretched: The Children of Frankenstein; Most of Frankenstein's more recent creations are mindless abominations made to be his servants and footsoldiers, but before The Doctor grafted his soul to his monster, the Creature created some children of his own. Now the Children of Frankenstein work to free their ancestor from his terrible fate, and become human themselves.

Galateans: Galatea was the creation of Pygmallion, a statue brought to life by the lonely statue maker with a ritual taught to him by the Love Goddess Aphrodite. They lived together for a time, Pygmallion being driven mad by disquiet. When the Immortal Inventor Daedalus stumbled on the situation, he tried to free Pygmallion and destroy Galatea (something he now considers a mistake; Its possible even the Immortal Inventor was suffering from disquiet at the time.) Since the, Galatea and her children, the Galateans, have sworn vengeance against Daedalus. Galateans are known for their great beauty (they need to be made from the corpses of attractive people).

Tammuz: The Golems of Hebrew legend, the Tammuz actually date back to Ancient Babylon, the creation of the Goddess Ishtar. The Tammuz tend to be big and earthy, and have a strong dislike for servitude.

Osirians: Named for the mythical ressurection of Osiris by Isis. Isis foolishly shared the mystical secret of resurrection with her ancient followers (Or perhaps not so foolishly, the plots of Isis run deep, and few believe she would do something like this in error). Osirians are known for being coldly logical and emotional, and physically lack some part of their body. Horus, the Son of Ra, knows of the Osirians, and works to either destroy or help these poor unfortunates, to atone for his mothers mistake.

Uglan: The creation of Siberian shamans, Uglan are corpses torn apart by angry spirits of the imageria then sewn back together. They have the ability to perceive the spirit world and interact with it, and often find work as shamans and mystics. Uglan are the type of Promethean most often made by the pact, and some are even full fledged members and court members.

Zeky: The infamous radiation Prometheans, Zeky are the creation of the Atomic Brain, who attempted to combine atomic power with alchemy with disastrous results. Not only do Zeky possess radiation manipulating powers, their very presence causes nuclear fallout. Rare even by Promethean standard, there are only six Zeky in the entire world at present writing, and three of them live in the Burning Protectorate.

The Unfleshed: Rather unique Prometheans, The Unfleshed were made not from corpses, but from machines; from a nanobot swarm to a humanoid computer system. They Pyros that powers the unfleshed forces them into a humanoid form, making it easier for them to fit in.

Pandorans: A failure in the creation process of a Prometheans results in the corpse tearing itself apart and the pieces hatching into misshapen monsters called Pandorans. In the presence of normal people and without a Promethean around, they are immobile and harmless, but when a Promethean draws near, they come to horrible life. Most of them are mindless hunters, but some of the larger ones are intelligent.

Centimani: Most Prometheans seek to become human, but some follow another path, the path of the Centimani. Centimani embrace the fact they are horrible monsters, and seek to study their unnatural state, horribly mutating in the process. The Covenant attempts to destroy Centimani wherever they are found, and Many Centimani are high ranking members of the Pact.

Ok I'm familiar with the Changing Breeds of Ol' WOD and liked how you included them. But I'm curious where you found the last 4 entries or are they something you came up with? :|

If I may...Mages are known in the old and the new World of Darkness...basically they can change reality according to their wishes, willpower and proficiencies instead of using "rote" spells. Best represented by the Variable power.
Prometheans stem from the new World of Darkness and are a playable character "race", so to speak.

this was requested by somebody a while back, and supported by Crinos, so, here goes

A Day in the Life: Frank "Snarl" Meltzer

* Frank's morning starts off early, quiet and alone, his wife holly (aka Winter of Love) and her students the New Age having gone back east to Castle Mass, and will be away for the next week or so. he gets himself cleaned and dressed in private

* That said, while the earliest moments are to himself, Lamia House is a halfway house for young meta-runaways and the like in the Los Dios area, so after breakfast (Generic-o's Breakfast flakes), Frank touches base with anybody awake at this hour, and finds out who'll watch the place while he's at work.

* speaking of which, Frank's running "late" and as he heads out the door only to find the lastest superstrong supercrook wanting to make a name for themself by taking down the "world's strongest Joker". this time it's Bulldozer, who goes down when Frank gut-punches him mid-rant, then takes him into custody, and carries the unconscious thug as he makes the commute to work.

* Frank avoids the freeway, instead taking the 'shortcut' his partner Anthony "Shifter" Dante pointed out for him, using a series of superleaps and fast running to make the commute from Kimberly Hills to Meta-Town in record time.

* after getting Bulldozer processed and put in a holding cell, Frank uses the the rest of the early morning to get caught up on paperwork and reports, before reporting for the morning breifing. Job #1 of the day's to bust up a drug lab that's been tainting los dios with the Nova-drug Mite, which has been turning punks, junkies and lowlifes into superstrong brutes

* The Bust itself goes off with only a minor hitch, when it turns out the lab was backed by The Confederate, a white supremacist Nova and former member of Gene Nation, and the resulting fight between him and Frank nearly levels the neighborhood before AEGIS liason Rod Macbeth drops Confederate with a "lucky shot". Interrogation of Confederate reveals he was was working with the New Mexico drug Kingpin known only as "Heisenberg", and was hoping the flood of Mitoid freaks would provoke the removal of 'undesirables'. he's pretty sure Heisenberg (aka "baseline race traitor") sold him out.

* Lunch time. Sloppy joes from the precinct commissary. yum.

* fair chunk of the afternoon is spent processing the morning's case.

* late afternoon/Early evening. the entire roster of the Superhomeys are reported criminally drunk and disorderly (even the robots). given the personalities and collective power involved, Frank's brought in as backup. Luckily, most of the team is too drunk to stand, and they're all taken down to a reinforced Drunk tank. Investigation into the cause of their debauchery is still ongoing at this time.

* Cheif Ortiz lets Frank check out for the rest of the day, aware of his pending 'rematch' with Smashface. Word is from city Hall is he'll be fed to the wolves in the hopes that Smashface's ego will be satsfied by clobbering Frank into a coma and he'll leave Los dios alone. Frank suggests Agent Macbeth as a 'referee', having approached the psychic agent about using his mental powers on Smashface while Frank distracts him, figuring that the mega-villain, like most everyone, is still unaware of Macbeth's true power

* returning to Lamia House, Frank touches base with the new arrivals and other boarders, and enjoys a meal he can't quite identify, before making use of the building's training facilities for the rest of the night. He also gets a call from the Pantheon that biols down to a) "For somebody who says he's not a god, you seem to be in many godly affairs", and b) "Don't lose, but if you do, you shall be an honored martyr."

* Frank finally goes to bed at a plausibly reasonable hour, only to be contacted in his dreams by Holly, as she and the New Age are currently travelling in the Astral Plane. Let's just say she makes sure he has a good night's sleep *giggity*.

I actually like this explanation for the Frankenstein's Monster and believe it's a wonderful little twist to the story and just another reason why Frank is in such a brassed off mood 24/7.

The ritual is a particularly unpleasant one as well, driven by the emotion and strong will of Frankenstein himself. It was as much a miracle of True Magick (Frankenstein being a renegade Son of Ether and former Progenitor hovering close to being Barrabi by the time of his death) as anything else. It was an act of desperation as opposed to caculated malice.

One should probably be grateful that he's lost the ability to do any magic but create Promethians.

The Doctor largely enjoys his immortal body, which makes him all the more crazy in many people's view. The fact he's continued his insane work thereafter should just highlight what a loon he is.

Divinos has encountered a few of these created by Kalinka's father in the image of Barbie, for all intents and purposes. He finds the whole thing disquieting to say the least and Divinos is nominally used to the idea humans are an extremely freakish race.
Crinos wrote:Tammuz: The Golems of Hebrew legend, the Tammuz actually date back to Ancient Babylon, the creation of the Goddess Ishtar. The Tammuz tend to be big and earthy, and have a strong dislike for servitude.
A large number were created during WW2, the mountains of Eastern Europe still haunted by these figures.

Osirians are distinctly different from Mummies, which is something which bothers many a Necromancer who consider themselves cheated by the process. Still, the ritual is considered better by some, since most Mummies are effectively condemned to a half-existence and are ridiculously hard to make. Osirians are capable of becoming human and much easier by contrast.

As one might expect, Ymir has attempted to help the Zeky and fight them by contrast.

Pure artificial intelligence Ultramind 2 speculates that the Unfleshed are actually created by placiing a human soul in a robotic body, thus making them still Promethians. This is something she'd speculated on herself a few times.

Doctor Frankenstein, of course, believes the Centimani have the right of it.

The last four are from the NWOD, more specifically, the book "War against the pure."

I didn't bother covering the races from Changing Breeds since they are more or less the same ones from the OWOD.

Anyways, I suppose I should finish WOD week. Then figure out where to go next.

Well, here's one for Megan as well:

A Day in the Life: Megan Conner

* Megan is woken up just prior to dawn by her Magical Device, Eternal Hope, receiving an alien distress signal. Megan flies out to lunar orbit where she finds several alien teenagers who went joyriding and had a breakdown. Well used to this situation she tows the ship to Earth and leaves it and the aliens with AEGIS to get them back home.

* Megan makes a quick stop at Freedom League headquarters to check in and get some breakfast. Megan reviews appearances by other style power rings over the last month as she eats before heading back to Los Dios.

* Feeling like she barely works there at all anymore, Megan Checks in the the LDPD, Inspector Reinhardt is busy on other assignments and sniper training, but Megan devotes some time to helping some of the other officers on mystical assignment by letting them get information from Eternal Hope.

* Lunch break. Megan heads back to Freedom City for new comic day and her regular comic store, Kings comics. While in town she eats lunch with her former roommate and best friend Lisa. Lunch and catching up is interrupted by an invasion by the Magma Men from Mars.

* Magma Men from Mars now likely bare permanent emotional racial memory scars.

* On the way back to Los Dios Megan encounters a tornado in the mid west and spends the rest of the work day preventing as much property damage and loss of life and possible, then helping out with healing and search and rescue in the after math.

* Finally back in Los Dios, before checking out Megan gets called in to help talk down/beat up a drunken Czarnian Bounty Hunter celebrating in meta town. Megan manages to take it out of town before too much damage occurs, but will likely need to spend a day replanting that forest.

*Megan delivers the information on other rings to the other Green Lanterns. Incidents are on the rise and Megan is wondering if other planets are seeing this kind of thing. Simon says he'll look into it.

* Megan gets a quick fast food dinner.

* Megan spends some time at home with new comics and anime before going to sleep.

Inspired both by Kruez's recent one, Cri's others, the First issue of Astro City, and just a bit of a od to Hitman/Lobo.

Could we have a write-up of the Technocracy in the Crinosverse? You mentioned it was controlled by Taurus and the Illuminati. Is it larger, smaller, or what than its WOD counterpart?

I'm also curious how the various Traditions groups are.

It seems that if the Traditions ever existed they probably have broken up by now. I doubt the SOE and VA have to hide with the John Smith Society, for example. Though, oddly, I threw an homage to the SOE in the description of "Western" branch of the White Lotus Society.

(Also the Akashic Brotherhood, Order of Hermes, and Celestial Choir)

I wasn't going to do Mage, but I may as well cover some points from it:

Mage

The Traditions: Most of the Traditions started as small cabals and secret societies which were eventually absorbed into the larger, more expansive groups. Among them are included:

The Akashic Brotherhood: Practitioners of Do, the martial art from which all other Martial arts come, The Brotherhood are the guardians of the Akashic Records, a mystic tome which contain all human thought and knowledge. Using training and meditation, the Akashic can access the records mentally, giving them apparent psychic and precognitive powers. The Brotherhood was absorbed into the White Lotus in the twelfth century following a failed attempt by the Iron Khan to steal the records.

The Celestial Chorus: Was a heretical sect of Christianity which believed that all living beings are splinters of God. Though condemned by the church in the dark ages, the Chorus endured, eventually growing to incorporate members of the other Abrahamic religions and eventually other religions. They were eventually recruited into the Covenant due to their mastery of sound based magic and their expertise at fighting demons and abyssal horrors.

The Cult of Ecstasy: A group of mystics who sought enlightenment through stimulation and expanding their consciousness, its no surprise this group of rather Bohemian mystics would draw the attention of the Tick Toc Doc, who made them part of the counter clock culture. Because of their association with the Doc, the Cult specializes in time magic.

Deamspeakers: Dreamspeaker is basically a catch all term for the Covenant mystics that come from ancient tribal cultures and specialize in dealing with spirits and the Imageria. They come from many different cultures and traditions, but all are renowned for their deep spirituality.

Euthanatos: Masters of entropic magic, the Euthanatoi are a karmic death cult which believes that sometimes death is necessary to help people along the karmic wheel; either because they are old and infirm or in pain, or because they just need to die. The Euthanatos is largely independent, working with both the Covenant and White Lotus as assassins.

The Order of Hermes: Probably the most traditional of mystics, the Order of Hermes consists of arcane mages, sorcerers, and Alchemists, who disdain the Pact and their blind power grasping (Not that the Hermetics are any better, they're just less honest about it.) The order of Hermes is largely associated with the Covenant.

Sons of Ether: A predecessor to the John Smith Society, the Sons of Ether was a gentleman's club in the early Victorian era for scientists whose theories were considered too bizarre and esoteric for "conventional" science. The group was always rather small and insular, with members having a penchant for blowing themselves up or mutating into monsters, and eventually what was left of the group was absorbed into the John Smith Society.

Verbena: Originally descended from druids and Witches, The Verbena celebrate life in all its blood and passion. They are members of the Covenant.

Virtual Adepts: Hackers and transhumanists, the Virtual Adepts are a cell of scientists and hackers who have been around since the creation of computers. They Believe that humanities future is in technology, and that digitizing ourselves is the first step in evolution. It was the Virtual Adepts that first discovered the Net realms of the Imageria, and created the Digital World in an attempt to show that a virtual biosphere was viable (they succeeded beyond their wildest dreams; as the Digital world is now home to godlike monsters which even now threaten the human world.) They eventually teamed up with MERLIN, whom they see as kindred spirits, to help out with their computer skills.

The Technocracy: According to the Technocarcy, the Technocratic Union has existed since the Renaissance; a secret order of learned men dedicated to protecting humanity from power hungry mages and monsters from beyond the veil of time. A selfless, heroic group dedicated to formalizing reality so the human race may live in comfort and convenience.

This is, of course, horse hockey. The Technocracy is actually an anti magic attack squad funded by the Labyrinth, with the simple purpose of wiping out magic users wherever they are found.

Taurus believes (correctly) that the fewer superhumans and mystics there are, the more valuable they become. Since he already has magic users working for him, and means to create superhumans, Taurus expends huge amounts of money to wipe out magic users and metamen, so his will be the only ones around (Project Icarus is his anti metaman group, The Technocracy is his ant magic team). Every year the Technocracy kills, imprisons, and brainwashes countless innocent mystics.

The Technocracy is formed into several factions. Among them:

Iteration X: Another team of transhumanists, Iteration X deals in high tech weaponry and cybernetics, creation cyborg soldiers to fight magic users.

The New World Order: Is the Technocracy's espionage division, dedicated to keeping the Technocracy hidden, as well as brainwashing and memory erasing their enemies.

Progenitors: The genetic engineer division, who use biotechnology to enhance their human agents.

The $yndicate: The financing division, whose job is to manipulate human development through commerce.

Void Engineers: The exploration wing of the Technocracy, dedicated to exploring deep space and the Imageria to find potential threats and eliminate them before they attack earth.

Naturally, The Technocracy is ignorant that they are secretly being controlled and funded by a minotaur in the service of an evil God. But if they ever found out, they would turn on Taurus and go solo (and, thanks to the Syndicate, they would probably be able to support themselves in doing so.)

One more thing to cover:

The Abyss: The most feared and hated part of the Imageria, the Abyss is not a natural creation, but the work of Orkus, who somehow cut a massive rent into the Imageria. The abyss is a dark, cold void, filled with nightmarish creatures beyond the ability of any human mind to conceive. The Abyss seeks nothing more than to grow, and consume the rest of the Imageria. If it were to succeed, the effects on humanity would be devastating; All magic would cease to function, superhumans would begin to vanish as the abyss ate away at the reality of our world, and the world itself would become increasingly cruel and cynical, a true world of Darkness...

Luckily, almost everyone is working to actively halt the Abyss' spread; Both the Covenant and the Pact see stopping the abyss as a worthwhile effort, and actively support each other in fighting the abyss. Occasionally though, an portion of the abyss manifests in the real world, often with horrifying results.

Nicely played, Crinos.

There's something amusing about the fact that the Technocracy, who think themselves the master of the world, are in fact controlled by someone who is the very embodiment of the sort of reality deviants they seek to oppose in the world.

(Taurus, of course, can now walk around as a Mutant - he just prefers not to)

I am also fond of the Counter-Culture and like the idea that this is where the Cultists got their benefits. Don't be so hard on the OoH and SoE, though

There's good guy members...somewhere.
