AUTHORITY bookline? And a small rant

Postby Neo-Paladin » Tue Jul 05, 2011 5:02 pm

I am having serious trouble getting the issues straight. i have recently bought the first 3books (Relentless, Under New Management and Earth Inferno and Other Stories)...but what comes next? i am totally lost here. Can anyone tell me which books are left and in which order to buy/read them?

And to get the folowing out of my system because I just had to say it:
Gods, I hate this obsession with crossovers and doing different character lines per event sometimes. Why not simply do things in order instead of churning out parallel lines? Take Brightest day, for Instance....it ties in with Cry for Justice, this new Lantern Corps thingy, JL: Generation Lost...and whatnot...and the previews at the back are not really helpful ....and as a some-time aficionado as opposed to a fanboy who follows everything, that leaves me completely lost. Why not simply say " Ok, Brightest Day 1 deals with the GL stuff...then a small detour in BD 2 to Green Arrow....then Generation Lost"...and give them a straight counter (Brightest Day 1, 2, etc.).

Unfortuneately, the Authority story arcs became increasingly non-linear and disconnected from each other, as different creative teams and editorial decisions affected the books (and the entire Wildstorm line).

Still, given it was established multiple versions of the team existed across the parallel worlds, this isn't really a big continuity problem.

The characters are being incorporated in new iterations in the rebooted DCU.

Judging by wikipedia, never read past the first couple of issues myself, it looks like Transfer of Power.

I read the majority of the series, but never collected past the Ellis run. There wasn't any point.

I was about to grab the first TPB of the Authority, but now you are making me take a closer look at the Wikipedia article... Should I be reading some Stormwatch first? I see a few of the characters draw their origin from that title.

nah the whole stormwatch connection isn't important. ellis got to do whatever he wanted with that book. basically he just introduced a bunch of characters and killed off everyone *but* the characters he introduced.

@tylrlsaa: Oh man you didn't like the Millar/Quietly era? I think I would read the phone book if Quietly would illustrate it.

I really dislike Quitely's proportions and especially his character's faces. I don't really get the idea of the Uncanny Valley as a general rule, but if I had to point at something that brings me close to understanding, I might pick his artwork.

I find his layouts near-brilliant and Quitely has an extraordinary ability to convey flow of action, but I agreed completely with the criticism of his proportions. Quitely's faces all look nearly the same, strangely angular and elongated, with oddly plump lips. While I mostly enjoyed his work on Earth-2 while researching my Crime Syndicate write-ups, I think this was the reason I couldn't tell if Superwoman was supposed to be a duplicate of Diana or Lois Lane.

He's done some stunning work at times, but I also think has trouble hitting monthly deadlines; witness his sporadic run on Morrisson's X-men.

I definitely know what you guys are talking about. However I always thought the incorrect proportions was on purpose or at least part of his style. If it was music I would say it has soul.

Also I always thought Superwoman was supposed to closely resemble Wonder Woman _and_ Lois Lane. They do fit the same description with the exception of height.

@veguto: Good art is important in a comicbook, but if the story just isn't there, well...

Sort of like the movies. Doesn't matter how good the cinematography is, if the script is weak, the script is weak.

Rewinding back to my question... does this comment mean you didn't like the title under Millar? I found a copy at my library so I'm probably going to take a look at it anyway.

I suppose it's worth a look, but Millar & Quitely can't compare to Ellis & Hitch.
