Nice LOTR templates, JD. You know, as a kid, I loved The Hobbit, read it 2-3 times but I could never get through all the other books. I got through Fellowship and about halfway trough The Two Towers and bits and pieces of Return of The King, but never read through all of them. Once I get the Little Thorpacolypses out of the house someday, I will have to make that a priority. Most of what I know of the setting comes from the movies, recent versions and 70-80's animated, which I just loved but I like that you are basing your templates on the books. Feels more complete.

As nice as the movies are. And they are fabulous, the movies took many liberties (for the sake of making it grandious). Which Isn't a bad thing, mind you. I love em. The books however are what we should be going by. LOTR is my passion after all. 8)

Gear in LOTR

Postby JoshuaDunlow » Sun Aug 07, 2011 1:14 pm

Gear in LOTR:
Gear is actually quite limited compared to most medieval settings, in Middle Earth weapons and Armor were not as advanced as say like they are in D&D. Armor never exceded scale mail.

WEAPONS
Dagger (Damage 1, piercing, Improved Critical 1)
Short Sword (damage 2, slashing, improved critical 1)
Sword (damage 3, slashing, improved critical 1)
Long Sword *(damage 4, slashing, improved critical 1)
Spear (damage 3, piercing, improved critical 1)
Great Spear (damage 4, piercing, improved critical 1)
Axe (damage 2, slashing)
Battle Axe (Damage 3, slashing)
Long Hafted Axe* (damage 4, slashing)
Bow (Ranged Damage 3, piercing/slow projectile)
Great Bow (ranged damage 3, piercing/slow projectile, Improved critical 1)
Hammer (Damage 2, bludgeoning)
Mattock** (strength powered damage 4, bludgeoning)

* This weapon can be used in one or two hands, in one hand the damage is 1 point less.
** Two handed weapon

SHIELDS
Buckler (+1 Active Defense)
Shield (+2 active defense)
Great Shield (+3 Active defense)

ARMOR
The armor system below is meant to accommodate, coverage as well as materials. This assumes the character has a helmet as well. A shirt of armor covered the chest, a coat the arms and chest (and perhaps the upper legs), while the hauberk covered the chest, arms, and legs.
Leather Shirt (+1 toughness)
Leather Coat/Mail Shirt (+2 toughness)
Scale Shirt/Coat of Mail (+3 toughness)
Scale Shirt/Mail Hauberk (+4 toughness)
Full Scale Hauberk (+5 toughness)

My opinion is similar to yours. I do love the movies, and if I had to list my top 5 fav movies of all time, the LOTR trilogy (I consider all three to be ONE big movie) would certainly be among them. Even so, I love the books more. There's just so much more depth to the books. Every time I read them, I get something new and wonderful and meaningful out of the experience. The Hobbit was the first novel I ever read that I actually enjoyed. I first read it when I was 11, I think, and I've read it 3 times total. I've read the LOTR trilogy 4 times and listned to it on book CD once. I've even read the Silmarillion a couple times and listened to it on book cd once. (Listening to the Silmarillion on CD is a very epic and awe-inspiring experience, imho. Highly recommended.) I guess you could say Tolkien's Middle Earth is one of my passions as well.

Mutants and Masterminds is another passion. Combine the two, and I'm in heaven!

Combat Mastery Effects

Postby JoshuaDunlow » Mon Aug 08, 2011 12:29 pm

Combat Mastery Effects in 3E
This is my solution for Incorporating some of the special feats from the W&W for use in 3e. Combat Mastery Effects are specialized powers created for the use of utilizing powers as a form of specialized attack from vigorous training. These powers are meant to be used with a specific attack. Ie. Unarmed, Axes, Swords, Guns, etc.. Treat each combat mastery effect as a power with the following modifiers.
· Feature (does not have to be used with the attack, flat 1 pt),
· Chained (Chained is a limited version of the linked power, meaning that it can only be used after a successful attack of the damaging effect. Chained is a flat -1 modification. )

A player may also consider creating a Combat Mastery array, if he wants to take advantage of multiple effects. Though remember that Combat Mastery Effects Should never exceed the damage bonus of the attack being used, unless the GM allows that option.

Examples of Combat Mastery Effects:
· Agonizing Strike. Affliction (Cumulative, Limited Degree [Impaired & Disabled])
· Blinding Strike. Afflication (Cumulative, [Impaired, Disabled, Unaware], Limited [Visual sense])
· Crippling Blow. Affliction (Cumulative, Limited Degree [Hindered & Immobile])
· Deadly Aim./Flurry of Blows. Add the Multi Attack Extra onto your attack.
· Finding the Weak Spot. Penetrating Added onto the attack, this cannot exceed the total damage bonus of the attack.
· Perfect Aim. Add the Ranged (Perception) extra. This only applies to ranged weapons used by the array.

Gimli Update

Postby JoshuaDunlow » Mon Aug 08, 2011 1:28 pm

Here's an update to Gimli.. I am thinking, if the dwarf immunities , shouldn't just be weaker advantages.

Image
“Come bring your pretty face to my axe!”

Gimli, son of Gloin (PL 7/95pp)
Race: Dwarf, Concept: Warrior

Abilities [40pp]: Strength 3, Stamina 4, Agility 1, Dexterity 2, Fighting 5, Intellect 1, Awareness 2, Presence 1

Defenses [10pp]: Dodge 2 (4), Parry 1 (6), Fortitude 4 (8), Willpower 3 (5), Toughness 4 (8)

Offenses: Initiative +1, Unarmed +6 (dc 18), Axe +7 (dc21), Throwing Axe +6 (dc 20)

Skills [13pp]: Athletics 2 (+5), Close Combat: Axes 2 (+7), Expertise: Dwarven Holds 4 (+5), Expertise: Stone Masonry 5 (+6), Intimidation 4 (+5), Perception 5 (+7), Ranged Combat: Throwing Axe 4 (+6)

Advantages [17pp]: All out Attack, Benefit (Elf Friend), Benefit (Orc Bane), Benefit (Royal Blood), Benefit (Stubborn), Benefit (Wealth 1), Equipment 3, Favored Opponent (Orcs), Improved Smash, Languages 1 [Dwarf, Westron], Luck, Power Attack, Startle, Takedown, Weapon Break

Powers [15pp]:
Dwarf Physiology (4pt multi power , innate) · 5pp
- Senses 1 (low light vision)
- Feature: Long Lived
- Immunity: Dwarf Physique (½ DC vs. Disease & Poison)
- Immunity: Dwarf Stubbornness (½ DC vs Intimidation)

Elven Cloak (removable, -0) · 2pp
Gimli doesn’t have this cloak till after the fellowship leaves Lothlorien.
- Concealment 2 (sight, blending)

Axe Mastery [8 pt Array, Feature (doesn't have to be used),Chained] · 8 pp
- Agonizing Strike 4 [Affliction (Cumulative, Limited Degree [Impaired-Disabled])]
- AE: Crippling Blow 4 [Affliction (Cumulative, Limited Degree [Hindered-Immobile])]
- AE: Finding the Weak Spot [Add Penetrating up to total strength bonus]

Equipment [12ep]: Galadriel’s Gift, Dwarf Axe (Damage 3, improved critical), Dwarf Steel Corselet (+4 toughness), Several Throwing Axe (Damage 2, Ranged, improved critical)

Complications:
· Motivation: Doing Good. Gimli does have a good heart, and goes along with the quest from his desire to defeat evil.
· Quirk: Stubborn. Dwarves really are stubborn, and when the player decides he will not be budged by the rest of his group he gains a hero point.
· Hatred: Orcs. Dwarves hate Orcs, and take any opportunity to return the favor.
· Small Size. Dwarves are smaller in size, but their girth compensates this. There are no complex game mechanics, since the benefits and drawbacks, do not constitute a Shrinking power. This is mostly played out by using the +1 stamina for their sturdiness, and a -1 agility for their girth. I might decide on a slower movement rate. But that is up in the air still.

Builder’s Notes:
Here is a rebuild of Gimli. Hopefully I got my math right on a lot of it. But he didn't change all that much.

Athelas in 3E

Postby JoshuaDunlow » Thu Aug 18, 2011 5:17 pm

Athelas
A healing herb, called asëa aranion in Quenya and athelas in Sindarin, translated to Westron (represented by English) as kingsfoil.

According to The Lord of the Rings, athelas was first brought to Middle-earth by Númenóreans, but by the end of the Third Age the knowledge of its healing properties had been forgotten by all except the Rangers of the North. In the folklore of Gondor, it was supposed to be especially powerful in the hands of the King. Aragorn used athelas three times in the narrative: first, to treat the wound inflicted on Frodo by the Witch-king with a Morgul-blade, second to tend the wounds of Sam and Frodo after the Fellowship's escape from Moria, and third to heal Éowyn, Faramir, and Merry of the effects of the Black Breath after the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. The last, in light of the folklore of Gondor, generated rumors that a King had returned to Gondor.

In game terms this powerful herb can do the following things when used by someone who has the proper knowledge. You can simulate this by someone with a Medicine Rank of 5, and/or The Grace of Numenor Feature (without this feat, Treat the array at Rank 2 instead of rank 4. Reducing all effects within). The effects of the Athelas are set for Power Level 6 campaign, and no effect should exceed this limit to keep things realistic and down to earth.

The base effect of Healing, is when the athelas is either applied as a salve or washed against wounds. The nullify (Drain), when steeped, showing its restorative functions. Which is affective when a few leaves are steeped in water. The Nullify Fear and Despair, are when a few leaves are crushed and allowed to fill the room with their sweet aroma. Soothing and clearing the mind with its fragrance. This is also the favored method to remove the effects of the Black Breath ).

Powers
Athelas: Healing 4 (Energizing, Stabilize)
. . Nullify: Burst Area Nullify 6 (Alternate; Counters: Black Breath (stun), DC 16; Burst Area: 30 feet radius sphere; Fades)
. . Nullify: Burst Area Nullify 6 (Alternate; Counters: Weaken (powers), DC 16; Burst Area: 30 feet radius sphere, Increased Duration: concentration; Fades)
. . Nullify: Burst Area Nullify 6 (Alternate; Counters: Fear Affliction, DC 16; Burst Area: 30 feet radius sphere, Increased Duration: concentration; Fades)
. . Nullify: Burst Area Nullify 6 (Alternate; Counters: Despair Affliction, DC 16; Burst Area: 30 feet radius sphere, Increased Duration: concentration; Fades)

I used Increased Duration, and Fades to simulate the Independent Extra.

Boromir

Postby JoshuaDunlow » Thu Aug 18, 2011 9:18 pm

Image
"True-hearted Men, they will not be corrupted. We of Minas Tirith have been staunch through long years of trial. We do not desire the power of wizard-lords, only strength to defend ourselves, strength in a just cause. And behold! In our need chance brings to light the Ring of Power. It is a gift, I say; a gift to the foes of Mordor. It is mad not to use it, to use the power of the Enemy against him. The fearless, the ruthless, these alone will achieve victory. What could not a warrior do in this hour, a great leader? What could not Aragorn do? Or if he refuses, why not Boromir? The Ring would give me power of Command. How I would drive the hosts of Mordor, and all men would flock to my banner!"
— The Fellowship of the Ring, "The Breaking of the Fellowship"

Boromir - PL 7

Strength 3, Stamina 4, Agility 1, Dexterity 4, Fighting 5, Intellect 2, Awareness 2, Presence 2

Advantages
Benefit, Status 2: Captain of Gondor, Benefit, Status: The Line of Stewards, Benefit, Wealth 3 (millionare), Close Attack, Equipment 3, Favored Foe: Orcs, Fearless, Improved Critical: Sword, Improved Smash, Inspire 3, Interpose, Leadership, Luck, Power Attack, Startle, Takedown, Weapon Break

Skills
Athletics 4 (+7), Deception 1 (+3), Expertise: Gondorian Lore 3 (+5), Expertise: Oratory 4 (+6), Expertise: Tactics 5 (+7), Insight 3 (+5), Intimidation 5 (+7), Perception 2 (+4), Persuasion 2 (+4)

Powers
Sword Mastery: Feature 2 (Adds Improved Critical, Variable Descriptor: close group - All Swords)
The Horn of Gondor (Easily Removable)
. . Bolster Courage: Enhanced Trait 3 (Advantages: Inspire 3)
. . Fearsome Call : Perception Area Affliction 6 (1st degree: Impaired, 2nd degree: Compelled, Resisted by: Will, DC 16; Perception Area, Selective; Limited Degree)
. . The Horn can be Heard regardless of distance: Feature 1

Equipment
Chain-mail, Medium Wooden Shield, Sword

Offense
Initiative +1
Fearsome Call : Perception Area Affliction 6 (DC Will 16)
Grab, +6 (DC Spec 13)
Sword, +6 (DC 21)
Throw, +4 (DC 18)
Unarmed, +6 (DC 18)

Languages
Westron

Defense
Dodge 5, Parry 7, Fortitude 8, Toughness 7, Will 4

Power Points
Abilities 46 + Powers 13 + Advantages 21 + Skills 10 (29 ranks) + Defenses 8 = 98

Complications:
* Responsibility to Gondor: Boromir's loyalty lies first with Gondor. Perhaps near the end of the fellowship , we find him finally seeing that there is more to this , than just what his father wants. And it costs him his life.
* Family Responsibilities: Boromor is Denethor's first born son, and has much to live up to in his eyes. He has always tried to do his father's will. And has succeeded in every endeavor.

Builders Notes:
Boromor gets quite the boost. However please remember I am using my own Revised 3E mass chartfor these conversions for more realism.

Good Boromir build. Not sure he really needs power lifting though. With a Strength of 4, he can lift 800 pounds (1600 with extra effort). That's already way more than any man alive can lift. (Olympic over-head record lift is 580 pounds.) Adding power lifting would double his lifting capacity, which might be a little excessive considering he's only human.
