DK's Non-Comic Book Builds: Bronx, Angela, Elisa, Xanatos

Postby Dark Koala » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:23 am

So lately, people have been asking me, "DK, you seem like such a cool guy with awesome ideas, why don't you have a thread in the Roll Call forum for all your builds?" (Editors Note: Lies. He has never been asked anything like this.) So here it is, DK's New Build Thread. You might have noticed that in the subject line.

I actually started a build thread about a year ago, but didn't update it for a long time, and only had two X-Men and a handful of original builds. It didn't seem prudent to necro such an old and useless thread, and my design philosophy has changed a lot since then, so I'm starting over from scratch.

I really don't spend much time doing superhero writeups, even though most of my campaigns actually are in the genre. The reason is that the DC Heroes & Villains books are gonna cover just about anyone you can think of in the DC Universe, and there are plenty of other people here in the Roll Call forum who have done just about any Marvel character you can think of. So I'm going to be presenting builds for characters from various other media.

Laharl

Postby Dark Koala » Sun Sep 25, 2011 11:42 am

They're not rabbit ears. I'm just having a really bad hair day...every day.

Laharl - PL 15

Abilities
Strength 9, Stamina 9, Agility 4, Dexterity 4, Fighting 8, Intellect 2, Awareness 4, Presence 5

Advantages
All-out Attack, Benefit, Status 4: Overlord, Close Attack 5, Diehard, Grabbing Finesse, Inspire 2, Leadership, Power Attack, Ranged Attack 11

Skills
Acrobatics 4 (+8), Athletics 4 (+13), Deception 9 (+14), Expertise: Netherworld Politics 10 (+12), Insight 5 (+9), Intimidation 9 (+14), Perception 5 (+9), Ranged Combat: Energy Attacks 10 (+14)

Powers
Demon Physiology - Immunity 4 (Aging, Starvation & Thirst, Suffocation [all]), Protection 8, Impervious Toughness 12
Combat Skills - Array
. . Blazing Knuckle Strength-based Damage 8, Burst Area on 12 ranks, Alternate Resistance: Will
. . Dark X Slash Strength-based Damage 8, Penetrating 12, Secondary Effect on 17 ranks, Quirk: requires sword
. . Dimensional Slash - Strength-based Line Damage 6, Line Area on 15 Ranks, Penetrating 12, Quirk: requires sword
. . Meteor Impact - Burst Area Damage 15 Linked to Burst Area Weaken Tougness 15 (Tiring)
. . Overlord's Wrath: Damage 15 - Ranged Damage 15, Multiattack
. . Sword Slash - Strength-based Damage 6, Accurate, Enhanced Advantage (Improved Critical x3), Quirk: requires sword

Offense
Initiative +4
Sword Slash: Close +15, Damage 15
Blazing Knuckle: +13, Damage 17 (Burst 12)
Dark X Slash: Close +13, Damage 17
Dimensional Slash: Area, Damage 15
Meteor Impact: Area, Damage/Weaken 15
Overlord's Wrath: Ranged +15, Damage 15

Complications
Hot Blooded: Laharl is short-tempered, cocky, and has very poor impulse control. Although he can be very clever when he tries, Laharl is far more likely to leap before he looks.
Power Lust: Laharl is willing to go to extreme lengths to protect his title as overlord, as well as prove himself as worthy of the title.
Relationship: Though he is loathe to admit it, Laharl has actually developed a strong friendship with Flonne, and possibly Etna as well.

Defense
Dodge 13, Parry 13, Fortitude 15, Toughness 17, Will 15

Power Points
Abilities 90 + Powers 74 + Advantages 27 + Skills 28 (56 ranks) + Defenses 31 = 250

 The protagonist of the first Disgaea game, Laharl is the son of Overlord Krichevskoy, who was poisoned and left for dead while the rest of the demons battled for the title of Overlord after Krichevskoy's death. After a long struggle, with the aid of his various minions and his allies Etna and Flonne, Laharl eventually conquored the netherworld and overcame a plot that threatened both the netherworld and Celestia.

 Translating RPG characters is always difficult, and it's only compounded by Disgaea's ridiculous level system (which litterally goes up into the hundreds of thousands). Thus, I went about translating Laharl more from a story perspective than based on his in-game stats. This build reflects how Laharl would look at the end of the game, as well as his appearances in sequel games. I had to take a lot of liberties with his Signature moves, but in the end, I'm pretty pleased with this build.

UPDATE: Been doing some more Disgaea builds, and it made me rethink my Laharl build. Even though having his sword skills and his signature attacks in seperate arrays worked well thematically, it felt sloppy. I've instead just given the sword skills a Quirk and put them in the same array with his other skills. I've also made small tweaks here and there to his other stats.

Skills
Acrobatics 12 (+18), Athletics 5 (+20), Close Combat: Unarmed 5 (+15), Expertise: Martial Arts Lore 12 (+12), Perception 8 (+12), Persuasion 6 (+9), Ranged Combat: Chi Attacks 8 (+13)

Powers

Special Techniques - Array
. . Attack Barrage Multiattack on up to 15 ranks of Strength
. . Kamehameha - Ranged Damage 13

Offense
Initiative +6
Unarmed: Close +15, Damage 11/15
Kamehameha: Ranged +13, Damage 13/17
Spirit Bomb: Ranged Burst, Damage/Weaken (Toughness) 15

Complications
Fighter's Pride: Goku loves a good fight, and can never turn down a challenge.
Honor: Goku will not take any kind of unfair advantage in a fight, and always gives his enemies a chance to surrender and go home.
Relationship: His wife Chi-Chi and sons Gohan and Goten.
Responsibility: Gokue feels responsible for the continued safety of the planet earth.

Defense
Dodge 11, Parry 11, Fortitude 16, Toughness 19/16, Will 14

Power Points
Abilities 102 + Powers 101 + Advantages 18 + Skills 28 (56 ranks) + Defenses 16 = 265

 A member of the Saiyan race sent to earth as an infant. Unlike Superman, however, Goku was sent here to destroy the planet. Fortunately, a bump to the head as an infant apparently knocked the murderous intent out of him, and he was raised by a benevolent martial arts master named Gohan. Goku grew up and had many adventures, getting more and more ridiculously powerful as time passed on. He saved the planet more than a few times, even battling other saiyans, alien overlords, killer androids, and an entity of pure evil.

 Like most shonen anime series, Dragon ball Z has a ridiculous level of power escalation. Much like the DC builds, this writeup is meant to reflect an "iconic" version of Goku. It lacks Super Saiyan 3, let alone GT's absolutely insane SS4. Although I listed his Alternate Form as Super Saiyan, it could just as easily be SS2, which as far as I could tell replaced SS1 once it was achieved. Goku is roughly in the same ballpark as Superman, which is about right to my mind anyway. He doesn't have quite the damage output of the Big Blue, but he's also slightly more accurate.

Let's talk about the Spirit Bomb. This is a hard power to model, but I went about making it like 2nd Ed's Disintegrate power, with it removing Toughness and damaging the target at the same time. I also made it Burst Area (although he only ever uses it against a single target, it's pretty huge) and gave it a Standard Action activation time. In reality, it took Goku a lot longer than that to "charge up" a Spirit Bomb, but this is more playable. I also put Distracting on both the damage and Weaken effects. As a GM, I would rule that those stack, making Goku Defenseless while charging the attack (after all, he just stands there stock still with his arms raised up in the air the whole time).

There's a lot of other techniques Goku can use, like a Homing version of the Kamehameha (just drop the ranks in ranged damage down by one and add two ranks of Homing) and the Renzo Energy Dan (I think that's what it was called--you know, when they throw a whole bunch of small chi blasts in rapid succession?), which would probably be Ranged Damage 10 with Multiattack. These are probably better represented as Power Stunts, though, since they are used rather infrequently.

EDIT: While working on other DBZ builds, I decided to tweak Goku a little bit. I liked how I had modeled Scott Pilgrim’s Power of Love to directly increase Power Level, and decided to apply the same philosophy to Goku’s Super Saiyan form. Now, when not in Super Saiyan, Goku functions as a PL 13 character in all respects (except for his Spirit Bomb power, which is still PL 15). I think this better reflects the overall power gain from the transformation.

I love Laharl as Goku at PL15. Interesting builds. It's tempting me to try to write up Etna, Flonne, Adell, Rozalin, and some of the other great Disgaea characters. Since Disgaea has such a huge range of character power, I might build a range of them, from low PL up to 15 or so. Really get myself used to character creation.

Hmm...

Thanks, Eld! I knew I had seen some other Scott Pilgrim builds around the Roll Call somewhere, but I had forgotten they were yours. Looks like we took a different approach to some characters, though, so I'll be very interested to hear your opinion of them. :D

@ Blitz: Yeah, I already have plans on doing Flonne, Etna, Midboss, Rozalin, and Adell. I might do a Prinny too, just for fun. I haven't played Disgaea 3 or 4 yet, though, so you won't be seeing Mao and the crew for a while.

Awesome. I'll keep toying with the idea, maybe do my own build eventually anyway, but I'm looking forward to seeing yours.

Scott Pilgrim

Postby Dark Koala » Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:28 am

Image
Scott Pilgrim
23 Years Old
Rating: Awesome

Scott Pilgrim - PL 7

Abilities
Strength 1, Stamina 2, Agility 3, Dexterity 3, Fighting 8, Intellect 0, Awareness 0, Presence 2/4

Advantages
Accurate Attack, Agile Feint, All-out Attack, Attractive, Beginner's Luck, Close Attack 3, Defensive Attack, Defensive Roll 2, Evasion, Improved Critical 3 (Power of Love) 2, Improved Initiative 1/2, Luck 2/3, Power Attack, Takedown 1/2, Uncanny Dodge

Skills
Acrobatics 4 (+9/+7), Athletics 5 (+8/+6), Expertise: Cooking 5 (+5), Expertise: Musician 3 (+3), Expertise: Nerdy Stuff 6 (+6), Persuasion 5 (+9)

Powers
The Power of Love (Easily Removable, -10) • 15 pts.
. . Flaming Sword Slash - Strength-based Damage 2 (Improved Critical 3, Penetrating 4, Reach)
. . Level Up Bonuses Enhanced Ability (Presence +2), Enhanced Defenses (Dodge +2, Parry +2, Will +2), Enhanced Advantages (Takedown +1, Luck +1, Improved Initiative +1), Enhanced Skills (Acrobatics +2, Athletics +2)
Video Game Physics - Leaping 3, Speed 2 • 5 pts.

Offense
Initiative +11/+7
Flaming Sword Slash: Close +11, Damage 3
Unarmed: Close +11, Damage 1

Complications
Immature: Scott is a complet slacker who can't hold down a job and is more or less completely unmotivated besides his desire to date Ramona. It's pretty sad, really.
Nega Scott: Scott has a hard time admitting his own faults, and his denial has began taking physical form in Nega Scott, a shadowy doppleganger of himself. Nega Scott usually appears when Scott is at his worst.
Relationship: With Ramona.
Wouldn't Hit A Girl: Scott is awfully squeemish about having to fight females.

Defense
Dodge 8/10, Parry 8/10, Fortitude 7, Toughness 4*, Will 5/7

Power Points
Abilities 38 + Powers 20 + Advantages 18 + Skills 14 (28 ranks) + Defenses 15 = 105

 The main character and "best fighter in the province," Scott got in a bit over his head. After cheating on and then unceremoniously dumping his highschooer girlfriend, Scott hooked up with the cool and mysterious Ramona Flowers. Unfortunately for Scott, in order to continue dating her, he has to defeat her Seven Evil Exes.

 I normally just build a character however feels right, without much regard for point totals. In Scott's case, though, I took some minor liberties to round him out to the suggested 15pp/PL, making him a PC-playable PL 7 character. After all, he's the main character, right? Not only that, but if you take away The Power of Love, he is a perfectly PC-playable PL 6 character! The Power of Love adds exactly one PL to his offense and Defense, and 15pp to his total, nicely representing the idea of his "Level Up." (The values before a slash mark indicate his traits before this level up, where appropriate.)

Scott's kind of a loser and a slacker, so you'll notice he's not good at much besides fighting. His Expertise: Music score is actually lower than his Expertise: Cooking, since it's noted several times that Sex Bob-Ombs kinda suck, while he's also noted to be the "greatest prep chef in the world" (although obviously an exaggeration).

This build is meant to reflect the comic version of Scott, although the movie and video game incarnations wouldn't differ significantly. Also, the Power of Understanding (from the comic) and the Power of Self-Respect (from the movie) would have the same stats as the Power of Love, I imagine.

Probably every character should have the Video Game Physics power, but it seemed most appropriate for the main character. I decided to give him the Attractive Advantage, since an awful lot of girls seem to get interested in him, despite his being...well, Scott.

Ramona Flowers

Postby Dark Koala » Mon Sep 26, 2011 6:36 am

Image
Ramona Flowers
Age: Unknown
American Delivery Ninja

Ramona Flowers - PL 6

Abilities
Strength 1, Stamina 2, Agility 3, Dexterity 2, Fighting 5, Intellect 1, Awareness 2, Presence 4

Advantages
Agile Feint, All-out Attack, Attractive, Close Attack 3, Defensive Attack, Defensive Roll 3, Equipment 2, Evasion, Improved Initiative, Improvised Weapon 2, Luck, Power Attack, Quick Draw, Takedown, Taunt

Skills
Acrobatics 5 (+8), Athletics 4 (+5), Close Combat: Unarmed 2 (+7), Deception 6 (+10), Insight 4 (+6), Perception 5 (+7)

Powers
Subspace Travel - Movement 1 (Dimensional) • 2 pts.

Equipment
Subspace Bag of Holding (Feature: "Carying Capacity: Unknown"), Big Hammer (same stats as warhammer), Titanium Baseball Bat (same stats as club), Roller Blades (Speed 1), 4 pts. of miscellaneous other crap.

Offense
Initiative +7
Titanium Baseball Bad: Close +8, Damage 3
Big Hammer: Close +8, Damage 4
Improvised Weapon: Close +8, Damage 2

Complications
Evil Exes: Seven of Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends--er, sorry, Evil Exes--have formed a league in order to "control the future of [her] relationship." This tends to come up a lot.
Girl's Got Baggage: No, not her purse of uknown capacity. Ramona has a lot of issues stemming from her past relationships, which manifests in odd ways, like compulsively dying and restyling her hair or naming her cat Gideon.
Relationship: With Scott.
Secret: Ramona doesn't like to talk about her past. Pretty much all of it.

Defense
Dodge 7, Parry 7, Fortitude 6, Toughness 5/2, Will 6

Power Points
Abilities 40 + Powers 2 + Advantages 21 + Skills 13 (26 ranks) + Defenses 14 = 90

 Ramona is a mysterious American delivery ninja. Ramona's myserious past is shrouded in mysterious mystery. Er...anyway, she's got these Seven Evil Exes, and if Scott wants to stay with her, he's gonna have to be them all.

 Ramona was also designed to be a playable PL 6 character. She often uses weapons, either grabbing random objects from her surroundings, or pulling things out of her extradimensional purse. This means that although she is less accurate that Scott, she actually has a higher damage output. Makes for an interesting inversion of usual video game character gender roles.

Like all of my SP builds, this one is based on the comic version of the character. The video game version would probably have pretty similar stats, but movie Ramona might be a bit weaker--she only really fought against Roxie, and Roxie was probably holding back.

COMING UP

I'll be posting Matthew Patel, Lucas Lee, and personal favorite Todd Ingram, hopefully sometime later today. The rest of the SP crew is in the works. Also plan on doing more DBZ characters (Vegeta and Piccolo, at least) sometime soon, and eventually I'll do more Disgaea characters as well.

Matthew Patel
Ramona's 1st Evil Ex
Powers: Mystical

Matthew Patel - PL 5

Abilities
Strength 0, Stamina 1, Agility 2, Dexterity 2, Fighting 1, Intellect 0, Awareness 1, Presence 1

Advantages
Defensive Roll 3, Skill Mastery: Expertise: Singing & Dancing

Skills
Expertise: Singing & Dancing 5 (+5), Ranged Combat: Mystic Powers 3 (+5)

Powers
Fireball - Ranged Damage 5 • 10 pts.
Mystic Levitation - Flight 1 • 2 pts.
Summon Demon Hipster Chicks - Summon 2 (Horde, Multiple Minions 2: 4 minions) • 14 pts.

Offense
Initiative +2
Fireball: Ranged +5, Damage 5

Complications
Pirates Are In This Year!: Matt has a questionable taste in fashion.
Responsibility: As a member of the League of Evil Exes.

Defense
Dodge 6, Parry 6, Fortitude 4, Toughness 4/1, Will 4

Power Points
Abilities 16 + Powers 26 + Advantages 4 + Skills 4 (8 ranks) + Defenses 15 = 65

Demon Hipster Chick - PL 4

Strength 0, Stamina 0, Agility 1, Dexterity 1, Fighting 0, Intellect 0, Awareness 0, Presence 1

Advantages
Defensive Roll 2, Skill Mastery: Expertise: Singing & Dancing

Skills
Expertise: Singing & Dancing 5 (+5), Ranged Combat: Fireball 3 (+4)

Powers
Fireball - Ranged Damage 3 • 6 pts.

Offense
Initiative +1
Fireball: Ranged +3, Damage 3

Defense
Dodge 5, Parry 4, Fortitude 3, Toughness 2/0, Will 3

Power Points
Abilities 6 + Powers 3 + Advantages 3 + Skills 4 (8 ranks) + Defenses 14 = 30

 Matthew Patel is the first of Ramona's Evil Exes. They dated while still in grade school, and with his mystical powers, he helped her defeat all the jocks that wanted to date her. Then she broke up with him.

 Patel is a jobber. As the first "boss fight," it shouldn't be a suprise really. He's only one PL lower than Scott was when they fought, but Patel just doesn't have many options in combat, and goes down pretty easily despite meeting his caps.

The Demon Hipster Chicks don't make much of a difference either. They really only provide backup singing and dancing for patel, but I guess they also threw fireballs, so they're not COMPLETELY useless.

The movie version of Patel was pretty much the same.

Lucas Lee

Postby Dark Koala » Mon Sep 26, 2011 12:42 pm

Image
Lucas Lee
Ramona's 2nd Evil Ex
Occupation: Sell-Out

Lucas Lee - PL 7

Strength 6, Stamina 5, Agility 2, Dexterity 1, Fighting 4, Intellect 0, Awareness 1, Presence 3

Advantages
All-out Attack, Benefit, Wealth 2, Benefit: Famous Skater/Actor, Close Attack 4, Defensive Roll 3, Equipment 1, Fast Grab, Power Attack

Skills
Athletics 5 (+11), Deception 4 (+7), Expertise: Acting 4 (+4), Expertise: Skating 4 (+4), Intimidation 5 (+8), Persuasion 4 (+7)

Equipment
Skateboard (Speed 2)

Offense
Initiative +2
Grab +8
Unarmed: Close +8, Damage 6

Complications
Responsibility: To the League of Evil Exes.
Sell-Out: (Normally this Complications would be called Greed, but "Sell-Out" seemed more appropriate.) Lucas is somewhat apathetic, and willing to throw a fight for whatever money you have on you.
Something to Prove:Lucas doesn't handle insults very well. Call him a sell-out, he'll whup the crap out of you. Call him a chicken, he'll kill himself trying to do an impossible skateboard stunt.

Defense
Dodge 6, Parry 6, Fortitude 8, Toughness 8/5, Will 6

Power Points
Abilities 44 + Powers 0 + Advantages 14 + Skills 13 (26 ranks) + Defenses 14 = 85

:!: Ramona's second evil ex, Lucas is a pretty good skater and a pretty good actor. He dated Ramona back in high school, so while he's in town to shoot a movie, he's stopped by to kick the crap out of Scott.

:!: Lucas is Scott's first real challenge. At one PL higher than Scott was at the time they fought, Lucas is a heavy-hitter. Scott might still have been able to beat him without trickery, but it would have been a pretty tough fight.

Lucas liked to pick up Scott and hurl him through the scenery. I reflected this by giving him Fast Grab, although that's not actually how fast grab works. A GM might rule that it could be used to grab and through an opponent in the same turn, rather than striking and grappling in the same action, but either way works pretty well. With a Strength of 6, Lucas can hurl Scott (obviously under 200 lbs) a good 500 feet!

Lucas is the first character whose movie version would be a bit different from the build I've presented here. He would probably have 2 ranks in Expertise: Acting (if that--he was obviously supposed to be pretty bad), and would have several ranks of Minions to reflect his stunt team.

Todd Ingram

Postby Dark Koala » Mon Sep 26, 2011 2:53 pm

Todd Ingram
Ramona's 3rd Evil Ex
Isn't afraid to hit girls, 'cause he's a rock star!

Todd Ingram - PL 9

Abilities
Strength 2, Stamina 3, Agility 1, Dexterity 2, Fighting 2, Intellect 0, Awareness 0, Presence 3

Advantages
Benefit, Status: Rock Star, Benefit, Wealth 2 (indepently wealthy), Fascinate (Expertise), Improved Hold

Skills
Close Combat: Unarmed 6 (+8), Expertise: Bass Guitar 8 (+8), Intimidation 6 (+9)

Powers
Vegan Psychic Forcefield - Protection 7 (Sustained)
Vegan Psychic Levitation - Flight 1
Vegan Psychic Powers - Array • 31 pts.
. . Bass Blast - Burst Area Cumulative Affliction (Dazed/Stunned/Incapacitated, Resisted by Will), Quirk: requires bass guitar
. . Punch A Hole in the Moon - Movement 1 (space travel); Strength-based Damage 12, Inaccurate 2
. . Vegan Mind Reading - Mind Reading 9
. . Vegan Psychokinesis - Perception-Ranged Move Object 9, Precise

Offense
Initiative +1
Bass Blast: Area, Affliction 9
Unarmed: Close +8, Damage 2

Complications
Freudian Issues: Todd apparently has unresolved issues regarding living up to his father's expectations. On the other hand, that might just have been an effect of being in Honest Ed's. We may never know.
Power Loss: Todd must uphold Vegan Code (ie, he cannot eat non-vegan foods) in order to maintain his psychic powers. Otherwise, the Vegan Police will come along and depower him (and he can not, in fact, dodge it).
Responsibility: As a member of the League of Evil Exes.

Defense
Dodge 8, Parry 8, Fortitude 10, Toughness 10, Will 6

Power Points
Abilities 26 + Powers 40 + Advantages 5 + Skills 10 (20 ranks) + Defenses 26 = 107

 Ramona's third evil ex is Todd Ingram, a complete douchebag rockstar who just happens to currently be dating Scott's evil ex, Envy Adams. Todd is a vegan, which gives him psychic powers. Seriously. You know how you only use, like, 10% of your brain? Well, it's 'cause the other 90% is made up of curds and whey. You just don't know the science.

 I saw the movie before I read the comics, and Todd was my favorite part. Between the ridiculousness of vegan psychic powers and his complete and utter douchebaggery, I laugh my ass off at this guy. But enough of that. Let's get on to the philosophy behind his design, shall we?

By standards of the Scott Pilgrim universe, Todd is an absolute monster. At PL 9, he's stronger than anyone but Gideon himself. Scott even notes that it would take a "poorly conceived deus ex machina" to save him (which he luckily receives). His main tactic is simply grabbing with his Vegan Psychokinesis and hurling his opponent through walls. Simple, but effective.

Punch a Whole in the Moon should probably be a power stunt and not an actual array slot, but he did it for both Envy and Ramona, so maybe he does it for every girl he dates? Whatever, I just wanted to put it on there. I fudged things a bit for his Vegan Psychic Powers array anyway. He never actually read anyone's mind in the comic (but, I mean, he's psychic, right? He MUST be able to), and the power he displayed in the bass battle might not even be psychic in nature. Also, there's no evidence that Todd had a psychic forcefield, but I've never seen a psychic build that didn't have one, so I gave him one anyway.

EDIT: At Arthur Eld's suggestion, I've dropped Todd's Awareness and related stats (Will, Insight, Perception)...a lot. The thing is, Todd isn't a standard psychic build--he's actually pretty dull-witted. In the comics, he had a mental breakdown in Honest Ed's before Scott did, and in the movie, he fell for Scott's bait and switch with the half-and-half. Todd really doesn't have it together.

Awareness 6? Will 10? Todd's so much of a spaz he freaked out in Honest Ed before Scott did. I gotta cry foul on that. His Insight and Perception also seem a little too high, especially for someone who would probably just rely on his Mind Reading. Figure a rock star should probably have some Expertise (pop culture) as well.

I do really like the Punch a Hole in the Moon, Power though. Of course, to actually punch a hole in the Moon, he'd probably need a Linked Weaken Toughness, Affects Objects Only.
