2e Solo Adventure: recruitment - CANCELLED

Postby badpenny » Wed Dec 21, 2011 9:12 am

I've been interested in running a street-level solo adventure for some time, and over the holidays I'll have the time to do it since my daughter is going to be at Grandma's WInter Wonderland! :) Hopefully someone else will have the time to devote to it (and afterward, if what we create together is a hit).

The particulars:

 2e Street-level. This means characters like Catwoman, Moon Knight, Daredevil, Nightwing, etc.
 PL 9-10. Of course, most players will go with PL10 if offered, but if you submit a PL9 character, you'll get more consideration.
 This is a gritty game: Lethal switch is on: weapons do lethal damage by default. You hit someone with a baseball bat, you can break bones.
 Powers should be non-existent, or limited to non-combat abilities, e.g. DD's senses, Glider-cape, etc.
 Characters need to be skilled in detective work and capable of operating as a solo character.

Since this is, in large part, your show, you will have a hand in creating the universe. So, as part of your submission, give me clear ideas (emphasis on the plural) as to what you want. I'll be looking for the best match with my own sensibilities.

Game play will begin after you are accepted and we hash out the details of what we both want. This will vary depending on what's submitted. Feel free to submit for any time period, e.g. Pulp, WW II, Cold War, modern, etc. I'm not sure about Wild West, or Cyberpunk (not sure I could pull those off). I'm not very interested in futuristic.

My motto is: if you don't ask, you don't get. It's just going to be the two of us, so here's your chance. Of course, we have to mesh, so a large part of who I pick is going to be based on whether or not I feel we're going to be simpatico, whether I feel I can create what it is you want, and whether I feel you can give me back what I need from a PC.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Penny

A pulp noir game sounds interesting to me. Something like a throwback batman or noir spidey game, those sound like either one could work?

Pulp is always welcome. So is Batman or the like.

Probably a no for Spidey (noir or not).

Hmmm... well Hunt is out, but I may have another idea. A PL9 with 2 ranks of Animal Mimicry. He hits all of his caps without the powers, so the powers will just be things like speed of a cheetah, blending of a chameleon, eyes of a hawk, etc...

Thoughts?

I was thinking about maybe trying out my Alvo character but I think that she will need a bit of a rebuild to make her more balanced for a solo adventure.

Argh! Another really cool concept for which I am waaaay to overcommited to even think of app-ing for. Still, as I told roguescribner with his new game, if you want me to pimp this in my games' OOC threads, I'll be more than happy to.

Animal senses would be fine, but any kind of Variable is right out. And I'd rather have Stealth/HIPS (i.e., skill) over a power-based Concealment effect. Speedsters are not going to interest me.

@ everytone: Costumed Adventurers, Weapon-Masters, Martial Artists. Classic streetlevel types are what I'm looking for. And don't forget the hook.

That, and I'd restrict Improved Critical to 4 ranks. I know nothing about the Phantom and wouldn't be able to offer much in that milieu (Jungle adventures, etc).

I think I'd also not be interested in a trained-from-birth type character who is 18 years old and a weapon master. Any kind of youth complication doesn't interest me very much. OTOH, I do love me some weapon masters and female heroes are always a plus for me.

I love being pimped.

Wait, that came out wrong.

Okay, so I dropped the Animal Mimic in favor of some basic animal type powers. Comes off as a junior Thunderbird, only with magical instead of mutant origins.

Feral (Danny Carter)
PL: 9
STR 20 (+5), DEX 20 (+5), CON 20 (+5), INT 10 (+0), WIS 14 (+2), CHA 18 (+4)

Skills:
Acrobatics 10 (+15), Climb 10 (+15), Handle Animal 12 (+16), Investigate 8 (+8),
Kn: Life Sciences 8 (+8), Medicine 6 (+8), Notice 8 (+10), Pr (Doctor) 4 (+6)
Search 6 (+6), Sense Motive 8 (+10), Survival 6 (+8), Swim 6 (+11)

Feats:
Acrobatic Bluff, Animal Empathy, Attack Focus: Melee 6, Dodge Focus 6,
Improved Initiative, Luck, Power Attack, Takedown Attack, Uncanny Dodge (auditory)

Powers:
Speed 3 [3pp]
Leaping 3 [3pp]
Super-Senses 4 (Extended Vision, Scent & Hearing, Tracking [scent]) [4pp]
Super-strength 2 [4pp]

Combat:
Attack: +7, Melee +13, Grapple: +18
Damage: Unarmed +5
Defense: +13 (+4 flat-footed), Init: +8

Saves:
TOU +5, FORT +7, REF +7, WILL +7

Costs:
abilities 42 + skills 23 + feats 19 + powers 14 + combat 28 + saves 9 = 135

Complications:
Enemy: Miakota is out to claim the powers for her own. She is a formidible Shaman warrior and a werecat.

Mind of the Beast: At times, Danny can take on the mind of an animal and start acting like one. This would act like Tainted and Split Personality.

Background:
Danny Carter's great uncle is a cook. At least that is what Danny thought. That's what everyone both sides in his family told Danny about the old Sioux "medicine man." Danny went to college and then to medical school, never really giving his uncle a second thought. While still an resident, his uncle was brought into the emergency room of his hospital, the victim of a wild animal attack. As Danny watched other doctors work on his uncle, Danny wondered why he was in the city, hundreds of miles away from his home, and how he got mauled by a wild animal. Suddenly, he shot up from the table, grabbed Danny's head and stared him in the eyes. After muttering some Sioux phrase, both men collapsed; Danny was unconscious, his uncle was dead.

When Danny recovered, he started noticing changes, both physical and mental. He gained a keen understanding of animals and their ways, and soon learned he could tap into their abilities. He found his strength, stamina, and reflexes had improved signifigantly, and he had gained the instinctive combat style of different animals.

As he was learning his abilities, he was befriended by a Sioux woman, Miakota. She told him she
had been seeking out his uncle to warn him about a great beast sent to destroy him and consume his powers. He didn't really believe her until he was attacked bu a giant cat-like creature. She offered to train him, and Danny accepted. After training for weeks, he started to notice the training was taking a dark turn. Using his abilities, he spied on Miakota, only to witness her turn into the great beast that attacked him. In her werecat form, she easily spotted him. They fought, and Danny was able to hold his own and eventually tricked her into losing her temper causing her to fall off a short cliff. Knocked unconscious, Danny climbed down to check on her but she was gone when he got there.

Danny went back to work, trying to act like nothing had happened. But he became more and more aware of things. Dangerous things and bad people harming people, animals, and the environment. Danny got tired of just watching and fashioned a costume to go out and do something as Feral.

Sorry kenseido, but I can't do much with that character. First, too many powers. I'm looking for real streetlevel, which means basically unpowered. I'll go with DD's super-senses as about as far as I'd stretch here. Perhaps I'd go with a single rank of Speed if that was your main gimmick, but I'd rather see you extend your leaping with Acrobatics. I'd be hesitant to allow Super-Strength beyond one rank of Powerhouse (SS limited with Distracting).

Also, the background is not something I'd be comfortable enough with to provide you good enough storytelling opportunities.

Since it'd just be the two of us, everything has to gel here.

Yeah, just because one idea doesn't work, doesn't mean that something else wouldn't be a fit.

It is a bit of a cliche but I was thinking something along the lines of Alvo doing a backpackers tour across the country and coming across a town or maybe city where she decides to stay and intervene because noone else is prepared to because of "insert mob name here" or mob war. Let me see what else I can come up with.

Do you have the same restrictions on devices as you have on powers?
