Viking Bay

Viking Bay is a small coastal town in Massachusetts. It is just far enough from the nearest metropolis, Liberty City to not be a bedroom community, but close enough for it to be somewhat convenient. Several rune stones have been found in the general area of the coastline hence the name Viking Bay. It has a population of just under 3,000 and has weathered the ups and downs of various economic disasters with a typical New England unfazability. The primary industry is fishing, and lobster trapping, since the old textile plant closed forty years ago. Tourists love the town because of its New England charm.

There is one high school- the Viking Bay, Vikings (what else?) one middle school (VBMS Eagles) and two elementary schools (Central and Coastal). There is a single one screen movie theater in the town that usually gets second or third round movies, so most people travel to nearby Newcastle. There is a coffee shop/music store/venue where the “in-crowd” kids and the goths like to hang out called the Hammer. It's a place for alternative music, overpriced coffee, tea, and sweets can be acquired. It's run by a middle aged woman named Rihanna Darque, a woman with a definite New Age bent to her lifestyle. There are two catholic churches, and two protestant churches (One Baptist (damaged by the meteor strike) the other Episcopalian) in the town.

It has been six weeks since the comet blew up over the town. Forty people were killed by falling debris, downed power lines/trees, and the occasional collapsed house. Three others are missing and presumed dead- supposedly swept out to sea. One of them was sophomore at the high school, Rihanna Darque's son, Raven.

The government has been in and examined the debris- now commonly called “pixie dust” and found it to be sterile dust and water ice. The one piece of video footage showing the explosion of the comet has been digitally enhanced to figure out what it was that struck the meteor, however it was moving so fast that no clear picture of it could be obtained. All that is known is that it was black, and it was moving at hypersonic speeds. There is speculation that it was some kind of experimental missile that the government does not wish to be made public.

(As you send me your character builds and history, I'll start your prologue.)

Scene: The Hammer, a bookstore, coffee shop, record store, teen hangout.
Terralin Kwan-

It has been nearly a month, and only now you have finally convinced your father that being in an American public school hasn't totally warped you. For a while there, it was touch and go as to whether or not he was going to ship you back to Jeonju to live with your grandparents. You are totally convinced that the only thing that saved you was a chance encounter between your father and your music teacher Mr. Wright who convinced your dad that you had real talent at the piano. Oddly enough, piano was the argument you'd won with your mother about which instrument to play- she held out for violin until the bitter end.

However, although that situation is resolved two other situations are really worrying you. First off, your best friend Alanis is acting very strange. Before the comet, she was everything Hollywood says a high-school girl should be- Pretty, blonde, a cheerleader, dating one of the “coolest” boys in school, and very popular. Suddenly she was very withdrawn, barely speaking to anybody. You weren't even sure if she was still dating her boyfriend, Scott. She was just acting weird.

The second problem was how to deal with the fact that strange things were starting to happen around you. You first noticed it when at practice you managed to kick the ball off the field- I mean way off the field- I mean it went over the tree tops and into the woods. Nobody ever found it. Things have only gotten worse lately. This morning, on the way to school, you were so caught up in what was going on with Alanis, you stepped out in front of an oncoming car. You're still not sure how you managed to leap over it, flat footed- in a heavy coat and boots.

Now, you're sitting in the Hammer, going over your Algebra 2 homework with Alanis who does not seem to be paying attention, and that's not helping you understand exactly what you are supposed to be doing. American schools are very different than Korean schools. They want you to understand WHY you do what you do in math, not just to do it.

Edward Stephenson

You know something? Your little defiance act actually got Coach's attention. He has been a little less down on you lately. For some reason, standing up to the old man willing to look death in the eye wasn't lost on him. He still gave you hell about not being that good at sports, but at least you think you're getting some respect out of him.

On the other hand the world is still peeing in your oatmeal whenever it gets the chance. So far, your laptop has crapped out on you giving you the blue screen of death -twice. Both times, it wasn't so much that there was damage to the hard drive as that it had been wiped clean. The worst part was that your paper for History class was on it and now you're having to rewrite it from scratch. At least here at the Hammer there's free wi-fi.

On top of that, there seems to be a shakeup of the school's social strata. A lot of the people who used to be the kicked class have gained a bit of respect- the ones like you who went to the school athletics complex for an end of the world party have sort of found themselves drawn together. There's a strange camaraderie among those who stood to stare death in the face. Even that strange kid Sebastian was seen on his own roof waiting for it end. Most people wondered why he didn't come out, but you got the feeling that there was more to that story than most people knew. After all you'd heard your dad talking about the hard-luck kid taking care of two “special needs” siblings. In your own head, you've stopped calling him Seb like everyone else, but instead thinking of him as Bastion- a bulwark of strength.

Now if you could just figure out how to tell your friend, Scott that you saw his girlfriend Alanis slipping off into the woods with that kid from the drama club, Bob. It wouldn't have caught your attention if they hadn't been holding hands and carrying a blanket.

Scott Spring

You felt good about what you did that day of the comet. You never felt more alive. But everything comes with a price. Since you informed Alanis that you were not going to sleep with her on that night- even if it was the end of the world, she'd been acting strange. For one thing, she refused to look you in the eye. Something was definitely up, but she refused to talk about. Things slowly settled down between the two of you, but there was a distance between you now that wasn't there before. You got the feeling that she was in some ways disappointed in you. Right now she was at a nearby table helping that new Korean chick Terralin with some algebra homework

At the same time, you old man at least had stopped drinking- for a while. He'd suddenly discovered religion and was spending a lot of his free time helping to rebuild the damaged Baptist church in town. He was hinting a lot that you should join him on Sunday mornings, but so far hasn't laid down any ultimatums.

Right now though, your big problem was helping your friend, Ed rebuild his paper for History class. Luckily your two papers were similar enough that you used some of the same sources, so you could at least help him with that. Hey it was something to do. The problem with February in Massachusetts was that even though the comet had taken out the local snow field, the dust it put in the air, had dropped the temperature to the point that even the locals were talking about it being an extra cold winter. Actually, they were talking about that all over the country- how the dust and ice from the comet was blocking out the daylight making it much colder. Heck, Miami got snow yesterday.

Scott reached across the table for his cup of tea, and then YOUR computer fritzed out with the blue screen of death.

Sebastian McKenzie

Your parents have kicked you out of the house- at least for the afternoon. They gave you an ultimatum- go out. Have some fun at the Hammer. They appreciate all you do for your brothers but it wasn't natural for you to be in doors all the time taking care of them. Sometimes you wondered if your mother was channeling some ancient Jewish grandmother-type ancestor. She sometimes sounded like a bad television show.

So, you've got $50 in your pocket, and you've already seen Green Lantern six times- the only show playing at the theater. So you found yourself wandering over to the Hammer. At least the tunes there were good. Mrs. Darque tended to play a lot of off the charts stuff- a lot of neo-folk and alternative rock.

As you enter, behind this guy who looks over to a toward a table. You can see where he waves at one of the girls sitting there, but she blushes deeply and buries her head in an algebra book. The girl she's with at least smiles at you. You know that she's a new Korean girl. You've talked to her a few times about classwork, but can't seem to get up the nerve to talk to her about anything else. You work your way over to the barista and order your choice of drinks.

When you turn around you manage to shock yourself by rubbing your wool sweater against the plastic coating at the edge of the counter. The big screen television across the room is playing some kind of kung-fu wire work movie and that sort of catches your attention. You wonder just how the martial artists in those kinds of movies learn to move like that.

Barrett Otis Baker aka Bob

First off, Alanis just totally blew you off again. I mean, the least she could do was at least acknowledge your presence. What a...., well you know. Second, this was the first time you'd been in the Hammer since the comet hit. The problem was Raven's mom. Raven was probably the closest thing you had to best friend. Like you he was in the drama club- he was really good, AND had the good looks to go far in it. He was also the perfect stereotype for the drama club. At least he never hit on you, but his boyfriend did once.

This was the first time you'd had the courage to face his mom. When you came in, you saw her look up and smile and wave. Suddenly you felt like kicking yourself for not coming in sooner. It was clear that the woman was glad to see you. You realized that you might actually be a reminder of her son that she might need.

You fell in line behind that Seb dude and ordered a hot chocolate when you felt a surge of electricity seem to run through the room. You could literally feel like your skin was starting to crawl. What really caught your attention though was the small spark and then flame that appeared around the security camera at the ceiling behind the bar.

Tuff McCoy
Okay, things were going great until this whole comet thing. Now half the time you felt like you were in an episode of the Twilight Zone or something. Lately your strength seems to have been off the chart. You actually managed to lift the tree that fell into the barn and almost killed one of your Dad's prized horses. It wasn't until it was out of the way and off the side of the barn that you realized that it had to weigh a couple of tons. It was the fact that you sank into the hard frozen ground up to your calves that told you just how heavy that oak tree was.

It really messed with your head. Now you're afraid that someone is going to find out and they won't let you play football. Finally, your parents sent you into town to have some fun with your friends. Of course considering your stepmom's recent trips to the doctor, you get the feeling that they have other things in mind as well. Oh well.

As you entered the Hammer, the first thing you noticed was that there seemed to be a lot of sophomores here. Alanis, the hot chick who'd been all moody lately was sitting with the Korean girl who had kicked your ass on the soccer field the other day. You kind of liked the idea of a girl who could meet you head on and compete. Scott, the town's party dude was scowling at his computer while the the coach's kid, Edward was typing away on his. Some guy you didn't know was standing at the bar with that guy every body called Bob, but for some reason you knew wasn't his real first name- you think maybe one of the other football players told you.

The main thing that caught your eye though that there was a sharp popping sound from the corner near the ceiling. When you looked up, there was a small blue flame coming from behind the security camera.

Thoughts are coming fast and furious to Edward's mind as he types version 1.2 of his history paper into his laptop.

Damn, everybody is coming here today. Sebastian just walked in behind that jack@$$ BOB, and Tuff Enough was right behind them. Of course, the Hammer is pretty much the only thing going in this pissant postage stamp of a town.
Maybe if I hurry I can finish this paper in time to have a little fun. Hell, maybe give Scott one more good day before talking to him about Alanis. Kind of burns to narc on a drama geek to a jock, but some stuff I just will not put up with, and armegedeon or not, screwing around on my friend is definitely on that list.

"Hey Scott, can you just email me your bibliography? That will cut about 10 minutes out of retyping this thing."

Ok, what was that popping noise? And What is that smell?

The Hammer was fairly busy this afternoon. Terralyn still didn't understand why Americans insisted on reading and studying in social gathering places. Her incessant tapping with her pencil, an attempt to drown out the noise around her, was unsuccessful. Where she was from, study room meant just that, a quiet place to go over your material.

"I just don't get this," Terralyn said, dropping her pencil on the book and falling back in her chair. Alanis didn't seem to notice, her head in a book.

"Hello? Earth to Alanis."

Alanis looked up from her book. "Sorry."

"What's been going on with you, anyway?" Terralyn asked. "You've been distant the last few weeks."

As I step into The Hammer, kicking the snow off my Rockies, I pluck my felt cowboy hat off my head and knock the brimload of white off just outside the door. With one hand I sweep my hair back away from my face and I plop the hat back into place. I'm trying to play it casual, but after the incident with the tree the other day I've been noticing more weird happenings. I lifted an Oak that sunk me knee deep in the paddock. That was weird. I could...and will attribute that to one of those monster adrenaline surges you always read about, like when some 90 year old granny lifts a Cadillac off a baby. That tree outweighed a caddy, but I'm in way better shape than some 90 year old granny, so there's bound to be some difference in max lift. Still, to be on the safe side, I'm not gonna mention it. This month's been weird enough.

Walking over to the counter, I can feel the jones. My sweet tooth and caffeine cravin' gullet are howling. It's time to feed the beast. "Hey Mrs. D, can I get a white chocolate, mocha la..." the I notice the fire at the security camera. Crap. "...uh, Mrs. D have you got a fire extinguisher? You've got an electrical problem, but I'll handle it if you grab me the extinguisher." Apparently the beast is gonna hafta live without it's sweet nectar for another couple o' minutes.

Bobby (Dust)
Location: The Hammer
Status: Normal
HP: 1

Bobby tried not to feel dissipointed when Alanis ignored him. She'd seen him, he knew she had, and then... nothing. Like he'd never even existed.

He wanted to be angry, hurt, to yell, but the truth was... he wasn't angry. Just a little crushed. That's how these things worked, right? The popular kids only had time for your when it was in their best interest. Truth was he'd seen this coming from a mile away.

But he had hoped maybe things would be different....

But things weren't different. For all the things that had almost come to an end nothing in his life had really changed except Raven.

His best friend, who suffered from a name as silly as Tuff with the additional stigma of being one of the few gay guys in town, had dissapeared. Raven wasn't the sort to just run off, so Bobby had been worried. He'd sent e-mails to every account Raven had ever used, called anybody he'd ever met, texted every number Raven had ever used, but.... nothing.

The only sign he'd ever existed was the usual jeers at school, now asking him where his "girlfriend" was, Raven's boyfriend who was too shaken up about the whole thing still to be of any help to anybody, and Raven's mom who wasn't much better off.

And with his parents being pissed at him for running off without warning when the world ended...

It wasn't the best month in existance.

And now... he wasn't sure why he'd come in here.

Actually that wasn't true, he knew exactly why he'd come in here. He glanced back at Alanis who was still ignoring him, and went back to looking at his Hot Chocolate.

That and he'd hoped Raven might have shown up. Maybe he'd had something weird happening to him too. He wanted to talk to him about it...

Then every hair on his body stood on end.

"Woah, did you feel that?" He asked, glancing over at Sebastian who was standing next to him.

Then he heard the new football player at the same time he saw the sparks, "Holy crap! Electrical fire. Get the breaker, I'll get the extinguisher."

He ran over to the corner where the fire extingisher was kept. He wasn't a part of the usual crowd, but one of the advantages of being the best friend of the owner's kid was you got to spend a lot of time all around the place, checking out things most people didn't know existed. He knew where all the cool stuff was, and where the fire extinguishers were.

He just hadn't really expected it to be that heavy, as he pulled it off the wall. It was a stylish number, looked great in the coffee shop, but it felt like it was made of lead.

"Uh, little help?" He called over to the football player.

Scott
Location: Hammer
HP: 1
Condition: annoyed!

Another dull day trying to get the tedium of school attended to so he could sneak away from his friends for his nightly guild raid. If we complete the 10 man maybe I'll get lucky and get the last set of my legendary armor, Scott thinks. Just as the thought passes his brain, his computer dies.

"Holy crap, just what I needed. Dude did you have a virus or something, my computer just did that blue screen thing you were moaning about earlier."

Just then Tuffy starts talking loudly about a fire, making Scott check himself. Ever since the meteor, he'd been shit hot, literally. He'd caught fire four times already since then, but never seems to get burned, he'd even tried to jump into a snow bank afterwards and ended up flying over it. The cool part was he didn't feel the impact when he it, though the puddle was inconvenient.
[i]
UGH, first my girlfriend is going weird on me, might have to pick-up on her hot Korean friend to get her to realize what she's missing, then I'm spont-catching on fire for no reason, now this!

"Ed, seriously, what the hell did you do to my computer."
Looking around for the fire, "Tuffy, what fire are you talking about?"

I barely get the words out of my mouth when Raven's buddy...BOB...Bobby...guy I don't that well, hollers at me. "Never mind Mrs. D, we got it!" I hustle over to where he's wrestling with the fire extinguisher and nab it. It's freakin' feather light. "You sure this thing is charged?" I really hope this is just a regular short. I don't need anything else weird happening.

Oh crap, the place is on fire. If the only place in town that sells my double mocha frapacino, extra whip with sprinkles, burns down, I am going to go Rambo on this whole 'burg.

"Yo, Tuff Skin, wanna put that out before we start getting crispy? I like my meat rare, not well-done." Edward said as he grabbed his laptop and stepped back from the commotion, images on the nearby computer screens going jumpy as he moved near them. "Anytime now would work."

"Youch." He exclaimed as something smacked hard into the back of his knees. Almost falling, he caught himself on the table and looked back to see a metal stool had run into him, and a couple of metal spoons left on the table were sliding across it towards his hands.

Now that is all kinds of freaky. Edward thought as he jerked his hands away from the table, the spoons stopping as soon as he did so. OK, I really hope noone but me saw that, because I have no idea what it was, but years of scifi reading tells me that this does not end well for the newly magnetic man. Either I die of a tumor, the government cuts me up, or I turn into something even more freaky than a high school student and some dorky scientist kills me while winning the heart of the sweet brainy girl who is somehow unaware of her supermodel good looks. None of which fufills my dream of dying by being crushed under my multiple extremely hot wives who are attempting to congratulate me for simultaneously winning the Nobel Prize, being inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall OF Fame, and perfecting a cocktail that causes spontaneous female stripping after a single sip.

"Bring what you got, we probably will need it." Edward responded.

"Good old Scott, Viking Bay's "Most Likely To Serve Cocktails At A Funeral". Lets hope he doesn't rip my head off when I tell him. Shooting the messenger is a cliche for a reason." Edward thought as he watched the entertainment.
