Completely un-required cash grab. That said the talent seems promising and I'll wait till after these come out to pass judgement.

Aaargh! On the one hand, the very idea is ridiculous.
( Y U NO STOP MAKING EVIL CASH-GRABS, DC? } ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

On the other hand, some of the talent involved I usually enjoy a lot ( Amanda Conner and entire issues of Adam Hughes?! *swoon* ).

Oh well, I guess I'll have to hope the writers and editors make miracles with the storytelling and make this thing worth every penny. I don't mind biting my own tongue when the outcome turns out to be good for me. I'll be reading many reviews before I even think about buying it, though.

If they are good stories then it isn't a cash grab. Actually, I could see this being called that if these premiered at the time of the movie, but they didn't. Maybe they'll be good. I, for one, have been looking forward to something like this for a while.

I saw one of the interviewees and I are on the same wavelength; Moore's ire about creator rights for a story in which he riffed the Charlton heroes rings a bit hollow.

To he fair he originally wrote it using the Charleton characters, under contract, and DC made him change them cuz he was basically gonna destroy them... All...

Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite comic stories are Alan Moore's, but he doesn't mind taking license with other properties (yes, yes the creators of his borrowed characters for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen are dead so he couldn't ask nicely). He just needs a bit of lightening up.

And if the new Watchmen comics really stink, everyone will pretend they never happened. Like Galactica 1980

Thing is the Watchmen characters are no more the Charlton comic characters, then the Squadron Supreme is The Justice League. Analogues yes, same characters no. Where as the Watchmen characters DC plans to rip off are exactly Moores Watchmen characters.

I think Alan Moore was right about being sorry for the damage he did when he wrote Watchmen though.

I'm not hopeful of Before Watchmen being any good. Putting aside that I find it unnecessary, the Watchmen was complete story thank you, and a ground breaking one at that, it needs no prequels.
But that important fact aside, DC has missed the fact that what made the Watchmen great, more than anything else, was the writing. And while the talent they have gathered is impressive on the art side of things, the writting talent, not nearly as impressive, and no where near the skills of mister Moore. So crassing up a classic with prequels using mediocre writing talent? Yeah I'll pass.
