usable Arsenal write needed

Postby Pholtus » Fri Mar 23, 2012 1:10 pm

Does anyone have a good write up for Arsenal, or a link to one on the forums? I looked up the one in H&V vol1 and it is less then useless. It didn't even give him a bow (his go to signature weapon).

:) Try a search for "Roy Harper Arsenal" in the Roll Call forum and you'll get a number of hits.

Ouch.

How about you take his write-up as-is and give him Green Arrow's bow and arrows, then reduce his Ranged Attack by 1 and increase his Equipment to 3.

That gives Arsenal a +15 to hit with the bow attacks and doesn't change his cost at all.

Did you read the sidebar for Arsenal in H&V Vol 1? it says:
The Expanded Arsenal wrote:...Representing Arsenal at a different point in his career is as simple as redistributing his Equipment points into the desired weaponry.

Arsenal really doesn't use a bow that often. He did as Speedy, and for a couple years as Red Arrow, but the build in the H&V book was Arsenal after losing his arm. He started using melee weapons at that point.

And when he was ORIGINALLY Arsenal he used guns and such much more often.

Do read the writeup.

I have to admit that Arsenal's writeup took me a minute or two to soak in when I first saw it... Something just seemed a bit "off" for a minute... Until I actually took the time to compare him to a few other characters, most notably Green Arrow... Then I realized it actually added up very nicely...

YMMV...

In fact, the write-up specifically says at 2 different points:
"Recently, he has set aside bows and carries only blades and bludgeoning weapons." In addition, it gives advice on moving points around as JonL advised above.

Most people probably know him as speedy or as red arrow. So It was kind of surprising he didn't use a bow when I first saw his stats. Still his stats in the book is far from useless.

as Arsenal his primary go to weapon was his bow. In he original appearance as Arsenal he used a Bolo, a bow, and wore an ugly purple outfit. his go to weapon when he lead the New Titans was his Pistol Crossbow, along with his bow and guns, (from issues 110 to 130 of the New Titans) in the Arsenal Plus one Shot he used a Pistol Crossbow, in the Arsenal mini it was back to his Bow. In the new Titans post techies Imperative he also used a Bow (the brownish red outfit) which lasted until he became Red Arrow. So no guns where never is go to weapon for any length of time.

What really Caught me off guard about the write up was that we were being told these were suppose to be the most iconic version of the character. The Roy Harper we got was the one armed/ post Cry for Justice version. to top it off the art wasn't for that version of the character. I get that going into these books the writers figured that this was the version of Roy we would have for a while. But I would like to see more detail given in the side bar besides what I felt was a 'rebuild him yourself' if you want the icon version. I would have like to seen them play up the 'speedy' part of his history, i.e. the fact that he is less accurate then Oliver but quicker on the draw.

This is the downside of being a rabid Harper fan, when to most of the DC fan base he is a poor mans Oliver.

It might have been that because they already had Green Arrow, the new Speedy and Merlyn slated for entries in the books already, they chose to go a slightly different direction with Arsenal to avoid having a fourth bowman/woman who wasn't all that different from the other ones.

EDIT: Actually, it's 5 bow based characters in the two books, I forgot about Arrowette and Connor Queen.
