BLOB (PL 9)
Real Name:
Fred J. Dukes (BC: Paul Schrier)

Daze (Intimidation), Startle

OFFENSE
Initiative
+1
Soft Body +6 (Close, Affliction 11)
Unarmed +6 (Close, Damage 6)

DEFENSE

3, Parry 8, Toughness 11 (Impervious 10)
Fortitude 13, Will 5

POWER POINTS
Abilities 64 + Advantages 2 + Defenses 8 + Powers 93 + Skills 4 = 171 Total

COMPLICATIONS
Infamy:
Fred is thoroughly obnoxious to all but his friends.
Prejudice: Fred is a mutant. Fred is a massive, obese man.
Temper: Fred is overly sensitive about his appearance and will attack anyone who humiliates him.

:!: So I have a bone to pick with Marvel regarding the Blob. In his first appearance... he's the GOOD GUY!!

The first appearance of the Blob in "Classic X-Men" has the X-Men attempting to recruit Blob to the team. However, because he is really fat, the entire team (with the exception of Jean Grey, who is trying to be nice despite her actual horrific fealing towards Fred) make fun of Blob to his face. They call him names and think he is a monster... even Beast, who, at the time, was the most monstrous X-Men in appearance.

Because of their bad attitudes, Fred decides he does not want to join the X-Men (rightly so, in my opinion). So, because he turned down the offer, Professor X right out states: "Then I'm going to erase your mind, so you don't know who we are." Blob then begins to go on a rampage because he (rightly so) does not want his mind messed with.

Face it. The X-Men totally dropped the ball on this one. Fred is a villain of their making. They have no one to blame but themselves. I would have gone to join the bad guys after being treated as poorly by the so-called "heroes."

"Superdickery" isn't just limited to DC characters, I guess :). Funny stuff- I never read The Blob's debut story. The '60s was FULL of that kind of stuff for some reason- you think the heroes are quick to throw down with each other NOW? Back in the day, heroes would come to blows over the absolute merest of perceived slights.

Indeed. One of my biggest problems with Marvel is that everyone in the world acts like they are a New Yorker. Quick to take offense, quick to deal out offences, and quick to judgement. Stan did some great work in his time, but he needed to realize that not everyone in the world acts like that.

Given that 99% of the world superhumans seem to congregate in NY it's kind of expected...

Yes, but my point is that even when characters are not from New York or when the heroes visit places outside of New York, the people there still act like New Yorkers.

Quite true. The Beast was originally drawn and meant to be.......not so attractive, if not rather beastly. In addition to his strength, leaping and big feet, his facial appearance was also the reason for the codename (Beast). Later artists seemed to forget this and change it making him appear handsome. Too bad Hank did not have some empathy for fellow mutants suffering from their mutant nature like Blob and the Toad. Despite the similar leaping abilities and crouching stances, Hank never had much empathy for Toad, either.

I never thought about that before, but you might be right-- Stan Lee was a New Yorker, as was Kirby. Stands to reason that both would assume everyone was as argumentative and quick to fight as they were :).

My personal favorite was a scene in which Spidey was being questioned for Avengers membership. While Wasp moaned about being scared of Spiders (oh, 60s Stan...), Hawkeye taunted Spidey. Who then assumed he was being tested, so he LEAPED ACROSS THE TABLE AND STARTED FIGHTING EVERYONE!! Five seconds later, they all settle down and Cap basically just laughs it off. Nowadays, they'd all look like they were insane, but this kind of thing happened all the time back in the day.

Also, the story contains Spidey getting a 100% legit victory over THE HULK, something that would NEVER happen later, post-Power Creep.

Yeah, I would certainly think someone who attacked me because he thought it was a test would be insane.

Good for Spidey, tho. The Hulk is never anything to sneeze at. (My Spidey is PL 10, while the Hulk is PL 13.)

There is no need for Bullseye in my universe.
