Background: Dr. Alan Locke grew up in relatively unremarkable circumstances. No great traumas marred his childhood. He was always a bright child, but the full scope of his intelligence didn’t become apparent until he was in high school. Still, Alan finished secondary education with top honors only a year ahead of his peers as his parents were concerned about his socialization being affected by pressure to perform prematurely in an environment of higher education.

When he started university, he didn’t go far from home. He completed his undergraduate work at Duke University at the top of his class in both the medical doctor program as well as completing a bachelor of science degree in electronic engineering. He took the fast-track toward full status as a medical doctor as well as a vigorous PhD defense regarding technological applications of quantum physics that has since been published in book form (spending five weeks on the New York Times non-fiction bestseller list).

Alan quickly became a sort of celebrity, being regularly features on news talk shows to discuss and explain recent developments in medicine and technology. He assisted the entrepreneurial superhero American Dreamer develop and test a new, compact defibulator that has become standard issue in most major metropolitan areas world-wide.

When not on the lecture circuit or working on his next magazine article or book, Alan was in the lab at his alma mater. Given an almost unprecedented degree of research freedom due to the substantial grants his presence earned Duke University, Alan secretly developed a “quantum gauntlet” able to harness various “quantum forces” via cyber-cerebro interface with its wearer.

Alan wasn’t content with public recognition and financial success. Working with the American Dreamer inspired Alan to something greater. It wasn’t enough to lurk in the ivory tower. Instead, Alan wanted to get his hands dirty, helping put right wrongs that conventional methods were ill-suited to handle.

And so was born Captain Quantum. Alan, armed with his amazing “quantlet,” donned a flashy costume and took to the skies as a costumed superhero.

Background: Janet Demetrios was a slight, mousy city historian trapped in an abusive, loveless marriage when she saw Chuck Lucas’s advertisement for the then-new Metahuman Sports League in her local newspaper. She saw the MSL as a chance to get away from her husband Michael and still support her daughter Alexandria.

Janet applied to the MSL for metahuman augmentation. She was accepted. Her modifications granted her increased speed, strength, and resistance to injury. Within the MSL, she vaulted to the top of the super-wrestling event.

It wasn’t until NITEMARE assaulted the first MSL-sponsored Super-Olympics that Janet considered using her superhuman abilities for something other than self-aggrandizement. She and a few of the other super-Olympians, including Allison’s rival Hippolyta, withstood NITEMARE’s initial assault. They rallied against that evil organization and eventually won the day.

Since then, Janet has adopted the persona Hippolyta and divides her time between sports entertainment, her daughter, and crime-fighting.

Background: Otto Braithwaite made his fortune in the petrochemical business. In his youth and middle age, this business consumed his life. Long hours of work ensured Otto raked in the cash, but left him little time to form friendships. The years went by. One by one, Otto’s few friends and family members grew old and died. Otto himself aged gracefully, remaining healthy but increasingly lonely.

He retired and decided to fill his time with esoteric studies. He spent a small fortune collecting occult tomes and reputedly magic artifacts, such as the Homburg Golem. As his knowledge and collection grew, so did his reputation among mystics, seers, and psychics. Otto became something of a eccentric celebrity among New Age believers, especially after he acquired the fabled Staff of Lir. According to legend, the Staff of Lir once belonged to Merlin himself, who had acquired the artifact from a powerful circle of druids. Unfortunately for Otto, his prized possession attracted the attention of the evil Moloch Coven, a diabolical cabal of wicked occultists.

A pair of Moloch Coven assassins broke into Otto’s mansion in order to murder him and steal the Staff of Lir. When the assassins entered the mansion, Otto was in his study researching the Staff. The assassins seized the moment, hoping to both kill Otto and take the Staff without having to bother getting the artifact out of Otto’s safe. The struck Otto with a death spell.

Unknown to either Otto or the assassins, the Staff of Lir’s enchantments protected its wielder against death spells. Although Otto’s aged body could not withstand the eldritch energies, the Staff saved him by channeling his life force into the Homburg Golem. Suddenly reborn as a creature of magic armed with the Staff of Lir, Otto was more than a match for the two assassins.

Since that day, Otto has been better known as Mannikin. The influences of the Staff of Lir have awakened in him a spiritual concern for environmental causes. He is also a dauntless foe of black magicians.

Background: Edward is perhaps the last member of a sentient race of humanoid beavers native to the North American Pacific Northwest. Habitat destruction, poaching, and an outbreak of deadly beaver flu have apparently destroyed this once noble people. Edward himself was captured by unscrupulous xenocollectors shortly after he buried his wife Margaret, who had died from the beaver flu.

A lapse in security let Edward escape from the xenocollectors, but his absence did not long go undetected. Pursued through the forests near Mount Ranier in Washington, Edward suffered a gunshot wound and fell several yards into a shallow stream. Injured and terrified, he still managed to elude capture, stumbling into the campsite of Mr. and Mrs. Ethan Stone of Seattle.

The Stones took Edward back to their home and nursed him to health. As fate would have it, Ethan was a student of Deng Ming Dao, a Chinese expatriate and one of the last true Shaolin masters. Edward and Deng Ming Dao became fast friends, and Edward evidenced great natural talent for the study of kung-fu.

After a long period of martial arts schooling, a sense of wanderlust possessed Edward. He donned the traditional orange robes of a Shaolin monk and traveled the land, earning his keep through a variety of odd jobs and having adventures. Throughout his travels, he remains ever-vigilant for rumors about others of his kind.

Background: Oliver Fruge was once just a normal FBI agent working as part of a task force trying to catch a serial killer dubbed the Dark Stalker by over-imaginative media wags. Unknown to the authorities at the time, the “Dark Stalker” (real name Alonso Brody) was a mutant telepath who used his psychic powers to paralyze his victims while he killed them. After weeks of grueling detective work, the task force finally uncovered a solid lead and prepared to assault Brody’s alleged residence near the city zoo.

Brody’s psychic powers forewarned him about his impending arrest, and he made a run for it. His mental abilities were of limited utility against a squad of heavily armed, determined federal agents and city policemen. Brody sought to elude capture through the zoo. Oliver and another agent spotted Brody as the killer slipped the zoo’s wall. As the other agent radioed in, Oliver gave chase.

A brief but tense game of cat-and-mouse ensued as Oliver followed Brody into the World of Primates habitat. Brody ambushed Oliver, stabbing the agent several times in the stomach and groin. Oliver emptied his Glock into Brody. As the killer’s life bled away, waves of psychic energy pulsed from Brody over Oliver and a nearby monkey.

By the time the other agents arrived at the scene, Brody was dead, and Oliver’s body had lost all vital signs. Oliver’s mind, however, had somehow been transferred into the body of that nearby monkey, completely overwriting the monkey’s own psyche.

Since that day, Oliver has be reclassified as Agent M. As far as the world is concerned, Oliver Fruge is dead. As Agent M, Oliver continues to serve his country while hoping for a cure to his strange condition.
