[lame mage] Evil Genius #1: World Domination released

Postby Ben Robbins » Mon Oct 09, 2006 5:39 pm

UPDATE: Evil Genius #1: World Domination is now available!

-------------

Here's a sneak peak at the cover art for Evil Genius #1: World Domination, coming in November.

Image

Unlike the Dr Null series or Zodiac Ring, Evil Genius #1: World Domination is a collection of five adventures, each with a different mastermind plot to conquer the world. Or just destroy it. Sometimes with these evil geniuses it's hard to tell the difference.

New Action Shticks, GM Craft, and variants to let you adjust the adventures to fit your game. Use them with Dr Null, the Crimson Claw, or swap in your favorite mastermind from your own game.

Later releases in the Evil Genius series will cover other adventure themes (Crime & Punishment, Expect the Unexpected, etc), because the real evil genius isn't the criminal mastermind, it's the person behind the screen.

And we love you for it.

I agree. I'll definitely check this one out. I've liked all the Dr. Null stuff.

The Dr. Null stuff rocked, my campaign is PL6, but man, I might alter the levels just so I can show it off to my players.

It is a nice cover. :)

Any chance this will be available as a POD at either RRPNow or Lulu? :)

Will these be scene-by-scene adventures, or more of a background/overview of plot style?

You know Mamba, you're such a voice of reason across the various boards that I can't bring myself to disappoint you. So barring unforeseen complications I'll do POD. It won't be ready right at release, but if you buy the PDF you'll get that full discount price against the POD cost (so you can buy the PDF first with no penalty).

I don't expect a lot of POD sales (I think you and Virtue were the only ones I've heard interest from) but if it makes it easier for people to run the games, it's worth it.

Scene-by-scene, but with a heavy dose of concept and big picture. Each adventure will only be around five pages, so each won't have the same detail as the Dr Null adventures, but more than enough to sit down and run it. I'm shooting for the sweet spot of detail vs brevity by focusing on the critical bits.

Originally my plan was to just do one or two page summaries for each, keep the whole thing very short, but more and more detail started to creep in. It's good stuff, particularly elements that can be used in other games (like an Action Shtick for doing Evacuation Montages), so I can't resist including it.

These are Big-Heroic-Fun games. I'll release a substantial demo so you'll know what to expect.

Hey! Thanks! You will definately get my double-purchase. :)

I really do believe POD is an untapped market right now. Almost everyone I know prefers to hold the book rather than stare at the computer screen. At the last game I was passing around my POD of Sons of the Gun and I believe it probably garnered Big Finger Games a couple of extra sales. Loaning someone a book to read can get you additional sales. Loaning some a PDF to read seems to have the opposite effect. :)

Cheers,

Print On Demand.

POD allows a publisher to get the exact same professional-quality printed book without needing to pre-purchase hundreds or thousands of copies. A POD company like lulu.com prints them as ordered. POD cost a little more than buying in bulk but there is no big money outlay for a publisher and no concern if you print 1,000 copies but only sell 100.

When do you expect the preview to be ready? Any chance of subscription service?

The demo won't be out until Evil Genius #1 is released, so November sometime.

As far as doing subscriptions, I can't predict a solid release schedule for future installments, so I'm not really comfortable taking people's money in advance. Instead I'm just going to keep the prices reasonable all the time, so it's affordable even without a subscription.

How's that sound?

I'll be buying. I really like the Lame Mage products. Any water/ocean based adventures planned for down the line.
