Back Story
Caden Vinter was involved with athletics at a young age. His specialty was the high jump, in which he regularly competed out of his age. At 12 years old he was expected to be a sure thing for the olympics in just a few more years. These dreams were shattered when Caden began to have trouble breathing. He hid his problem for a long time in fear of what it would mean to his competing. By the time others noticed his problem, the doctors said it was too late. Ultrasounds and MRIs revealed what the doctors labelled an inoperable tumor which had collapsed Caden's lungs to less than half their original size. Strangely though the initial x-ray was never able to develop a clear picture.
While the doctors were unable to explain what this tumor was they knew one thing, it was still growing, and in a few years time Caden would lose all lung capacity. Adding to their confusion was the fact that Caden's blood oxygen levels were all very good. They rationalized that his lungs must have been increasing in efficiency in the body's attempt to combat this growth. No matter how efficient the lungs were, Caden was told that he would soon develop more severe problems. Several treatments were attempted, chemotherapy and radiation were both ignored by Caden's body, without even the normal side effects from such treatments. These impossible results prompted accusations that Caden was actually sabotaging the treatment somehow.
While Caden was being subjected to all of these tests and treatments his athletic career ended. The dangers of having a child compete with such a significant health problem meant that Caden was not welcome anywhere. Simultaneously the previously gangly boy was filling out rapidly. As Caden realized that the medical professionals were not helping him he tried to find solutions for himself. He reasoned that his growth spurt would keep his lungs large enough to function indefinitely. Also he decided that if his blood oxygen was good then he should be able to hold his breath longer and practice using even less oxygen. Neither of these ideas were a cure of course, but when you are told you won't live more than 2 or 3 years with a year of that in the hospital, you grab on to any idea the represents hope.
Day by day Caden practiced holding his breath in secret. He managed to stretch out his time to an astounding 5 minutes. Something that certainly should have been physically impossible for Caden. At this point he decided that he had reached a milestone and stopped bothering to time himself. All day long Caden would minimize his breathing. Had he continued to time himself he would have been further shocked when he passed the 10 minute mark without dizziness or other ill effect. The days and months passed. Caden avoided all medical attention realizing he was defying all expectations by still living.
It was 2 years later that Caden finally stopped breathing. One night Caden was practicing holding his breath and fell asleep. Normally this would result in his body restarting his breathing while Caden slept, but tonight his lungs failed to restart on their own. In the morning Caden's mother found him still unbreathing and began to panic. She felt his pulse and was screaming for help when Caden abruptly woke up, sat up, and with a small breath asked his mother what was wrong. When his mother regained consciousness she was in complete confusion. She had seen him not breathing but here he was apparently healthy and fine. She told herself she must have been mistaken and tried to forget what had happened. Caden however could not forget. His breath refused to start autonomically. Only when he spoke did he breathe. Caden was terrified of what this meant, but at the same time terrified more of what the doctors might think. He knew rationally that he shouldn't be living without breathing, and yet he did live. This mystery was however only the first that would soon plague Caden's life.
While still disturbed about his lack of breathing, Caden also found it to be tremendously liberating. Without having to worry about breathing he could once again take up athletics. His much bulkier frame and lack of training left him with a lot of catching up to do. The high school coaches would not allow him to train there because of his known problem, and his parents were obviously unwilling to see him do what they assumed were incredibly dangerous activities. Caden realized he would have to start his training in secret. Surely once he was in shape again he could prove it was safe for him without having to deal with doctors. For 3 months Caden practiced in a nearby forest until he felt he had regained some of his potential. His legs regained their strength and leanness. He decided that he needed to have a number he could tell the coaches that would ensure him being allowed to try out. He smuggled the equipment he needed for a proper high jump to a clearing in the forest and began to practice his high jump form. Caden found that he could jump over the bar no matter what height he set it to, but it was always a close jump.
This ability to always hit the exact height needed confused Caden. He wanted to know what his capacity was before he got back into competitions. Theorising that it was simply due to his visualizing of the height of the bar he decided he needed to visualize a heigher target to discover his best. Caden selected a nearby tree as his focus and prepared to jump. He went through a flawless approach and launched himself with tremendous effort. Caden visualized his high goal and was astounded when he passed far above his bar and mat. Soon his arc carried him over the top of the tree he had selected. Only then did he worry about his landing.
The rotation of his body was extended due to the extraordinary length of his jump, and at the top of his jump Caden's feet were already close to pointing downwards again. When he hit bottom his spin would leave his head as the first point to impact. In a desperate attempt to reduce injury Caden attempted to tuck his body together. The few seconds of falling were just enough time for Caden's tucking to increase his rate of spin. With a large thump Caden crashed to his knees. A moment later he stood up, uninjured and amazed. He chuckled to himself as he realized it would be grossly unfair of him to compete with others.
The thrill of his jump was still running through his body and he decided to try again, but to aim higher. Caden decided on a standing high jump straight up to avoid the landing problems he had almost had. He bent his legs, looked up at the sky and jumped so hard his legs hurt. The ground cracked under the force exerted through his feet and he was launched up above the trees. Time seemed to slow down while Caden stared at the sky. The colour slowly changed from blue to black. As this happened Caden dropped his gaze. His view went past the curvature of the Earth and down until he could see the clouds and landmasses beneath him. He could not believe what he was seeing. Surely he thought he had gone mad. Then as gravity pulled him back downward he began to panic. How could he survive such an incredible fall? Slowly the ground came closer and closer. Caden realized he was not quite above where he had lept upwards from. Sighting a familiar landmark he oriented his mind and focused on the trees he had come from. His body slid across the sky until the trees were directly beneath him. As they loomed ever closer he aimed himself for a tree in the hopes that it would break his fall. He missed. He body crashed into the nearby high jump mat and tore through it. A few seconds later he pulled himself out of the wrecked high jump equipment. He was unhurt.
Caden decided that this was obviously just a dream. He looked at his tattered and torn clothes and destroyed shoes. Even if this was a dream, he decided that decent clothes were in order and headed home.
The back door was unlocked and Caden stepped quietly inside, only to find his parents sitting at the kitchen table looking at him. They demanded to know where he had been and why his clothing was in shambles. For a long minute Caden was silent while his mind attempted to resolve the shock of this situation. Finally his mouth started moving of its own accord telling them all he had been through. Words spilled out from the frustrations he had felt over the last years. He described with agony his initial terror when he stopped breathing. Caden told his parents of the joy he felt that he was still alive and his determination to regain his life. He finally caught up to the present and told them what he had been doing that night. As he described his jumping it became so real to him that he could not deny it anymore. All this time his parents stared silently, their faces mirroring the shock his held minutes before. Abruptly he ran out of words. His parents stayed quiet for a long time and Caden began to fear they thought him insane. His mother slowly turned her face to look at his father. Her face filled with tears and then without a word she got up and walked out of the room. Caden's father stood as well, and moved toward Caden. The words his father said were a totally unexpected shock. “I'm sorry Caden”.
His father began to tell him a story. Twenty-five years ago his parents had been introduced at what had seemed to be a support group. Each of them had a small unknown tumor that caused some medical difficulties and also seemed to cause a few side effects. His father had survived a failed parachute during a skydiving accident. He had fallen 3000 feet without any injury. His mother had experienced a different effect. The town she had grown up in had a severe water contamination. Her entire family had gotten sick, except for her. Her health was perfect. In fact through out her life she had never had a virus or infection. A government sponsored organization had brought together a few dozen people with similar impossible stories. In time it became clear that the solitary goal of this group was to research the odd abilities these people had. Surprisingly of the 16 men and 13 women, 11 men fell in love with 11 women almost immediately. It was as if something inside them recognized each other. When the first couple had their first child the government had stepped in with frequent and intrusive examinations of the child. Six months later the baby girl died. The cause of death was a tumor in her head. The government had the body completely dissected to the shock of her parents. It was at this point Caden's parents decided to flee. They spent a year on the run before finally settling down to start a new life.
A year later they had a small home and Caden's mother was pregnant. They brought a baby girl name Denise into the world and loved her with all their hearts. Parenting agreed with them and in a couple more years later Caden was born too. On Denise's 4th birthday she collapsed and stopped breathing. In the ambulance she began to breath again. They kept her in the hospital for a few weeks doing tests and determined she had a growth in her chest. She held on for another 7 months stopping breathing twice more, until she stopped breathing for a fourth and final time.
At that point when things seemed worse that their life had found a new depth to descend to. Their daughter's body was transferred to a private facility without their consent. There she was dissected and autopsied. All this time they thought they had gotten away, but really they had been allowed to go. Caden's father looked at Caden with a grim face. “These people are still watching us. They are watching you and will eventually come for you. We have raised you here pretending you were safe, but knowing all the time that you never were. I'm sorry Caden, I should have protected you.”
Caden embraced his father. “You did all you could. Whereever you could have gone I'm sure they would have followed you. I am alive and that gives me joy. You've raised me with love. Whatever happens you have given me a happen life. Now lets go find Mom, I'm sure she needs a hug too.” The two found Caden's mother and had a long hug followed by a longer talk. It was decided that they would try and keep Caden's abilities secret long enough for him to finish school. For the next year and a half Caden practiced in secret, telling no one. Even his parents only knew that he was practicing jumping. By his fifth jump Caden no longer destroyed his clothes or shoes. After this he developed a uniform that consisted of a black track suit and boots. Over his face he wore a black balaclava. Now that he had some control Caden attempted to test his powers. On his sixth jump he left the atmosphere.
Once out of the air he found he could direct movement mentally. In seconds he hurtled past the moon. He looked out at the universe around him and found that he could easily focus on a specific object. First he cruised at an impossible speed to jupiter and then to venus. Finally he focused back on the earth. In a moment he was there. Caden suddenly realized that once again he had defied physics. Bad enough that could even leap into space and then fly about, but he must have exceeded the speed of light. He would have giggled had there been air to breath. This reminded him he should get back on planet. Caden focused on north america and swooped toward it. Now that he could feel gravity his speed seemed to have slowed down significantly, but he was still directing his movement and not merely falling. While flying seemed to be easy, landing was still tricky. Caden was able to stop just in time before crashing into the ground.
The time passed rapidly toward graduation day. Caden focused hard on his studies of physics. He had a great desire to know what rules he was breaking in the textbook. For instance why didn't he create a sonic boom, and how did he jump so far when his legs were certainly not capable of putting out such a force. Furthermore how could he direct his movement when he had no means of propulsion. While these question were not easy to answer Caden did invest in a good stop watch and began to measure his speed. In what Caden felt was the gravitational field of a planet he exceeded a velocity of 16,000 kph. Once out of the gravitational field Caden eventually was able to travel anywhere in the solar system in under a single second. On a particularly brave day he travelled to what he had identified as alpha centauri. It took him less than a minute to reach the star. Caden turned around and found he could easily remember which star was his. In another minute he was back floating above earth.
From that point on Caden began to study astronomy intensely, memorizing locations of stars that he could reach in a single night. He travelled far each night and began to bring home small souvenirs. Rocks from other planets. First from the solar system and then from the few nearby stars that held solid planets. Each of these souvenirs went into a display case that Caden kept labelled to catalogue his journeys. By the his graduation day Caden had gone to every location he could in a single night without being out all night.
Caden had sent off some applications to various universities but never received an acceptance letter. It did not terribly concern him though because he had places to go. Three days after he officially graduated he realized why he hadn't received any letters. A man and a woman in black suits had come to Caden's house. His parents stalled them at the door saying that Caden had gone out for the day. Caden knew they had come for him and that he was in potential danger. He ran out the back door, only to crash into another suit.
